At their extremes both become authoritarian and tricky to distinguish. I've thought for a long time that to be considered far left the threshold is much lower than it is to be considered far right, at least in this country.

The issue Britain has possibly always had is that it's got an economically 'left' but socially conservative population. Or in @shmmeee parlance, 'hang the paedos but fund the NHS'. This is why I think we saw big swathes of the country move from Labour to Johnson and then to Farage, but also why the Conservatives themselves have a problem arguing to cut spending and give tax cuts to the rich as after a while people figure out it hurts them.

So Farage seizing the 'I'll spend money on you and kick out the foreigners' is a strong message with a big chunk of people.

Cheat code party man. That’s the real lesson from the Nazis. People like nationalism and free shit and easy answers to difficult problems. The work of democracy really has to be keeping those that know this and want to use it to enrich themselves away from power. Sadly we don’t have gatekeeping any more so now you get fascist propaganda direct to your eyeballs while you’re trying to find CCFC transfer news (Twitter, not here lol)

This is where I thought a charismatic centre left politician would be the antidote both in the US and over here. I still think it is, problem is none exist so we have the Dems and now Labour tweaking around the edges and pointing at graphs with more fury than Philosorapter while right wing grifters cream up the votes.

Obama was the closest the West had to that and he blew his chance to put the right out of contention for the foreseeable.

Can’t be an Obama post 2012 and social media.

Not gone quiet at al, and of course you didn’t really think it was a great democratic movement.

2,962,989 signatories, to be “debated” by Parliament on 6 January 2025.

I do wonder whether today’s relaunch is in some way / partly a response to it - a recognition that things aren’t being seen as going particularly well.

I see the 1.5 million houses has been restated. I’m sure it’s only been a couple of weeks since it was said this was a two term target.

Just found this which wont fill anyone with confidence,

I hope it's not a response to the petition.

He's on a hiding to nothing if it is as he's pandering to people like yourself who will berate him no matter what he does. He could change everything completely and they'd still start another petition BECAUSE he'd changed from the thing they petitioned about before. Meanwhile he's alienating the people who might actually give him a chance and vote for him.

Surely he can't be stupid enough to not realise that?

Yesterday’s reset is a sign that he knows that Labour aren’t winning any arguments or friends at the moment, and they need to. I have never known a government to reset after a mere few months. Shows they really weren’t ready to govern, no govern ready solutions as Boris might put it, despite 14 years observing how to do it badly and to think about what the right approach would be.

Nothing new, not really sure why they bothered unless it was seen as an opportunity to remind, and reinforce to, the nearly 3 million signatories of all the “great stuff” Labour has put in motion (slow motion, obviously).

It was quite funny watching Rayner desperately wriggling trying not to say that if these milestones aren’t achieved that they will have failed and should be judged as such. As I have said earlier, it’s only a matter of 3 weeks since the person leading the housing programme said that the 1.5 million target was a two term goal.

Malc for your own sanity please stop believing everything you read in the DM and right wing twitter.

It wasn’t a reset, literally all of those things were in the manifesto.

... he's just watered them down a bit, that's all.

Just because it's in the Guardian doesn't mean it's a reset.

Again, it's all in the manifesto so how is that a reset.

Just because you dribble on every word Starmer says doesn’t mean it’s a reset

The manifesto is right there for everyone to see.

It's all there, in black and white.

Might be some big words for you though, let me know if you need some help.

The only thing watered down is the pledge says 95% clean power by 2030 whereas the manifesto just says clean power by 2030.

the rest is exactly the same as the manifesto.

He is resetting growth targets, he hasn’t made any commitment on smashing gangs (ha ha) but in reality he’s trying to smother the BOE dire warnings about the economy after his “disastrous” budget

We all know you have goodies and baddies and Starmer is your goody.

You accused Malc of reading right wing publications

Even Alistair Campbell was taking the piss out of him

The only person who says it isn’t a reset — is you

Malc does read right wing publications, he will freely admit that, so I'm not sure what your point is there.

Maybe I'm the only person to cross reference it against the manifesto then. I repeat - it's literally all there. See for yourself.

I know all those things were in the manifesto.

I really don’t do Twitter.

Not just the Daily Mail referring to it as a reset either

I thought I would join the Labour Party for a laugh. £2.88 per month.

Is this a Freudian slip or simple self awareness on their website

”Our party is powered by people like you giving what they can to build a fairer Britain. By adding an additional monthly donation to your membership, you will be directly helping us to win the next general election and kick out this Tory government.”

Despite us being told three weeks ago that the 1.5 million houses was a two term target.

I’ve seen the manifesto. Some of it is in red and white. Filed it in the fantasy fiction section.

Why the need for yesterday then? How would you describe it? Surely voters don’t need reminding so soon of what we were promised?

I don't know exactly. Maybe it was just to summarise the manifesto and the plans for the people who haven't read it (which is most people of course!) ?

Maybe they've had feedback that the messaging has been poor and they wanted to condense it or bullet point it for people.

I honestly don't know what the point of it was. All I know is that it can't be described as a reset when it's exactly the same stuff that's in the manifesto.
