At their extremes both become authoritarian and tricky to distinguish. I've thought for a long time that to be considered far left the threshold is much lower than it is to be considered far right, at least in this country.

The issue Britain has possibly always had is that it's got an economically 'left' but socially conservative population. Or in @shmmeee parlance, 'hang the paedos but fund the NHS'. This is why I think we saw big swathes of the country move from Labour to Johnson and then to Farage, but also why the Conservatives themselves have a problem arguing to cut spending and give tax cuts to the rich as after a while people figure out it hurts them.

So Farage seizing the 'I'll spend money on you and kick out the foreigners' is a strong message with a big chunk of people.

This is where I thought a charismatic centre left politician would be the antidote both in the US and over here. I still think it is, problem is none exist so we have the Dems and now Labour tweaking around the edges and pointing at graphs with more fury than Philosorapter while right wing grifters cream up the votes.

Obama was the closest the West had to that and he blew his chance to put the right out of contention for the foreseeable.

I do wonder whether today’s relaunch is in some way / partly a response to it - a recognition that things aren’t being seen as going particularly well.

I see the 1.5 million houses has been restated. I’m sure it’s only been a couple of weeks since it was said this was a two term target.

Yesterday’s reset is a sign that he knows that Labour aren’t winning any arguments or friends at the moment, and they need to. I have never known a government to reset after a mere few months. Shows they really weren’t ready to govern, no govern ready solutions as Boris might put it, despite 14 years observing how to do it badly and to think about what the right approach would be.

Nothing new, not really sure why they bothered unless it was seen as an opportunity to remind, and reinforce to, the nearly 3 million signatories of all the “great stuff” Labour has put in motion (slow motion, obviously).

It was quite funny watching Rayner desperately wriggling trying not to say that if these milestones aren’t achieved that they will have failed and should be judged as such. I don't know exactly. Maybe it was just to summarise the manifesto and the plans for the people who haven't read it (which is most people of course!) ?

Maybe they've had feedback that the messaging has been poor and they wanted to condense it or bullet point it for people.

I honestly don't know what the point of it was. All I know is that it can't be described as a reset when it's exactly the same stuff that's in the manifesto.
