Aggression (2 Viewers)

I know it's early days, but the intent and aggression showed today is a far cry from what we saw early season. Was very impressed with many players who seemed to hide early on. Seems like they want to impress. If that's what a week's worth of training does then bring on the rest of the season

And only one yellow card.

Not sure I'd call it aggression. I'd still like to see more of it. Seen more aggression in a under cooked creme brulee, than in most of our players.

But once we had the lead, it's more grit and determined actions that saved the points. Having someone give the opponents defence and keeper a hard time, sets the tone.

Maybe it’s the Millwall air; an infusion of aggro.
The Millwall fan in the corner doing his dad dancing, threatening, gesturing pre-match was the most entertaining bit of the game until the second half. Poor steward having to stand next to that every home game (although she did nothing to stop him - can't say I blame her!)

On top of this, the coaches that lampard has brought in have tweaked our build up play, and it's made a fucking huge difference.

Today when we were playing from the back to front, Torp was dropping back in line with Joel and Thomas,

MVE was making his runs up the wing, while Torp was slotting in almost as a right sided centre half, but what it did was allow our weak defence to have the numbers back, while MVE and Sakamoto pinned Millwall's midfielder and defender back with their attacking efforts.

With Torp dropping back for all of this, it will also improve our distribution when we play out from the back.

Wasn’t it sheaf who was dropping into the back two?

Lampard said they'd been working on exactly these bits and pieces in the 'presser'. Hopefully he can keep getting ideas across quickly (good ones, anyway!).

Torp was used almost as a quarter back, sitting deep behind Sheaf and Rudoni, but Torp wasn't actually being specifically used to start our play from the goal kick.

Collins was giving it to Thomas who then shifted out to MVE and then Torp would slot in next to Bobby while MVE and Sakamoto could work their way up the pitch as a duo, this also nullified any potential aggressive press from the opposition.

All season we have been seeing the same build play without Torp doing what he did today, Collins to Bobby, Bobby to MVE and then boom the opposition team would press us aggressively and it would eventually result in either us making a mistake, panicking and often it's Bobby Thomas fucking it up, or it would result in a side to side boring, slow and predictable routine.

People have said this season MVE has been poor, and for a large part it's because he's not been able to get himself flying up the wing, doing what he does best with Sakamoto, and it's because of this specific opposition tactic to press us and keep us deep in our own half, it's honestly piss poor really that not one of the coaching team under Robins had an answer for this. This isn't digging Robins, coaches job not managers job, none of those silly idiots with the ipads had a fucking clue let's have it right.

It's taken just 1 week for these 2 new coaches to come in and look at it and go, where has it gone wrong, MVE and Tats haven't been as effective, oh the overlap isn't there this season, oh every team is just pressing us and it's almost a written rule when playing against us, press there defence and you will have some sucess these 2 new coaches have sat back and gone, when we playing out from the left hand side,.have Sheaf drop in and on the right have Torp, capable midfielders that won't panic like Bobby Thomas and it also stretches opposition.

One more noticeable tactic, even when we were 1-0 up as soon as we had the ball back all 4 defenders were instructed to move as far up the pitch as possible, at a particular point of the game our defence was a good 10 yards in Millwalls half. Proper risky tactic this, however football nowadays literally is all about creating overloads on the opposition and this specific tactic is the mother of all overloading, this is basically how Man City fucking beat everyone.

Not seen that much aggression since this forum started putting together questions for Doug King after Robins was removed.

Anyone else notice the urgency and intent foul or no foul, to win the ball back as quick as possible whenever we found ourselves our of possession?

Another classic Pep Guardiola tactic that he has used at FC Barca all the way to Man City.

Have you defence at the half way line
Create overloads, build slowly, create overload.

Loose possession > aggressive in winning g back possession, opposition is now likely out of position, space will be there to take advantage and you have 10 players in opponents half to take advantage of this.

This is what Lampards coaches have adopted, can be very risky when you have the likes of Bobby Thomas in your team, but we have Eccles, Torp and Sheaf who as a midfield can play this football and overload parts of the field or be used as quarter back types when our wing backs want to go forward.

This type of football will work and will get better providing our players gain confidence and typically that comes with solid performance and or winning games.

We will have games tho where teams will wait for our defenders to come as far up the pitch, sit on the half way line and then try and slice a pass through our centre backs for a rapid forward to run on to, however
Our 2 new coaches had MVE sat central on the half way line yesterday while we were attacking on some occasions, MVE was almost acting as a centre half, he is fucking rapid so if that counter tactic was used, MVE would have been able to match any forward for pace.

Facts are tho, we need a new centre half and a new left back either in Jan or end of the season. Bobby can't play this style naturally, and this type of football is what generally sees you promoted.

Yeah definitely noticed the change going forward no tippy tapping around backwards and sidewards, we got forward so much quicker with everyone pushing a lot further forward. I reckon once the players get more use to playing like this we will start winning games a lot more comfortably. The amount of space we created and the number of players we had running forward against Millwalls defender was very encouraging to see. Can't wait for Wright to be fit again as I a can see him scoring a hatful of goals

Didn't Robins also put MVE on the half way line to sweep up the loose ball if a set piece broke down.

Great posts from you today. Nice to see a poster get a hard on for tactics like I do lol. Instead have posters like shmee telling me I live in tiki taka la la land when I said I was open to lampard coming in

That said whilst I agree with your posts I would persevere with Thomas personally. He has some risk to be an amazing CB imo. Needs to work on passing but I would give him a chance to do just that

All of this is why I’m cautiously optimistic that Lampard will be a great manager for this team. He’s got top coaches working in his team and he himself has coached at the highest level. Lampard has said he’s used his time out to really focus on the game and tactics so it’s interesting to see how he applies this with us.

This is an assumption, but I can’t imagine Lampard taking the job if there wasn’t a decent bit of cash to spend in January.

Tactically his 2 coaches know what they are doing, Lampard is the name or presence that can have the squad buy into it.

Perhaps change was needed, time will tell.

But Lampard needs a centre back, a left back and a midfielder.

It will be interesting to see how far Doug backs Lampard where this is concerned, because that squad we have, up top is solid, midfield is okay, defence weak.

It's unbalanced, it needs quality
