I said in the match thread it was interesting to look at the full back starting positions - they were much closer to their respective centre backs. Especially on the left but at some points on the right this season it's been a real vulnerability for us.

Might be worth us holding fire when reflecting on players atm. Sometimes some players struggle for one manager and then look like world beaters under another (Akpom comes to mind).

Thomas looked good yesterday. Still think some experience is needed to help train them if nothing else and help in the dressing room but happy to wait until January to see how the players suit the system and who comes out to put a flag down on a position.

Our defence was better last season with the same players And Thomas played 44 games so you'd have to say a combination of things has made us concede more goals this season
I don't think we need to buy/loan another CB but change the way we play that leaves our defence so open to a counter attack. I wasn't at Millwall and have only seen highlights but it sounds like we had a better defensive set up from the whole team. Against Cardiff we often had JDS, Rudoni & EMC all within 20 metres getting in each others way & leaving a massive space behind for Cardiff to exploit. It also sounds better with Torp/Sheaf dropping deep to get the ball from the CBs to play forward which is what McLean did excellently for Norwich at the CBS.

Th Centre Backs won't be our issue once we stop letting our WB/FB get stuck so high up the pitch.

It has been the problem all season, no protection for whoever is playing centre half because JDS/MVE etc get caught high.

I've lost count of the amount of times, in particular Bobby has been forced to try and make open space tackles wide on the pitch - after an opposition wide player has got in behind Milan.

Richard Shaw thought he was outstanding especially in the closing stages when our backs were against the wall.

Let's be honest Richard Shaw knows a thing or two about good defending and coaching. He knows what to look for. He also said he was doing a lot of organizing of the defence.

Once again, I am informing people on here that he passes the ball very very well. It’s just that sometimes he chooses to play a risky pass at the wrong moment. Feel like this is pretty easy to coach out of a player.
Just to add to this, it's not always about the quality of the pass but also movement to receive it. I think everyone gets frustrated when we see the CB's pass between themselves only to get the ball back immediately if they go wide. The issue for a while has been poor movement to create space combined with neither CB wanting to advance with the ball.

Noticed Torp and Sheaf dropping to collect which negates that problem whilst there was a lot more movement to pull players and make space. Just a better system then we've seen for a while.

The only other players I've seen of ours do this (or pull relatively wide to offer a ball for the centre backs) are Hamer and Jamie Allen

Lampard wants to see Bobby step up and become a leader in the squad. Suggests he’s pretty keen on him.

Does this not highlight the limitations of data. Our defence have been conceding nearly 2 goals a game on average and our CB at the heart of the mess has decent stats! Unless it's all been Binks fault but he has a rating of 6.71 which is similar.
Not sure how data can be used to show how much the mistakes in dangerous positions from several players have cost us dearly with goals against.

Don't disagree, but it does point to lots of the goals conceded being more systemic than individual

Personally really rate him he's still very young for a CB and it's great he has abit of c***t about him aswell. As many point out he drops the occasional bollock but that's par for a CB of his age. He also clearly enjoys a good old school tackle. And attacking set pieces. I'm sure he has the potential to be a dressing room leader and future captain.

Bidwell always puts himself in a position to receive a pass.

Midfielders, that would be Bidwell's natural position

He pushes up and offers an outlet to the central defenders. No different to a mid dropping deeper. It's all swings and round abouts. But he offers options more consistently than others.
