Slowly, but surely losing my love for this sport. Its nothing compared to how is was in the 80s-90s-00s.
It's purely business now, played by mercenaries, its soulless.
Such a shame. Looking forward to the 12.30 Saturday kick off! :(

Fucks sake! I didn't realise it was a 12.30 kick off Saturday, 12.30 the week after as well. Bollocks!

Ah yes, those Corinthian days of the 90s and 2000s, when players only asked for an orange slice and a handshake. Jumpers for goalposts, ITV Digital on’t wireless.
Coventry Blackburn, late 90's. Snowy pitch, orange ball, players with black boots. Compare that to the yoga retreats, warm stone massages and melodic strum of Jack Rudoni playing his guitar before training - I think I know which I'd choose.

I am definitely less effected by results these days than I used to be. I remember the adrenaline I used to get when we scored and the depression I’d keep for days after a loss. Both have kind of gone now and I don’t know why. Maybe age and other things in my life becoming more important. Maybe because football has changed so much.

I also wonder whether it is the vast access of everything we have now. The fact we can just watch every game on our phones whilst we’re doing other things. I remember having to sit and listen to away games on the radio and wishing I was watching it. Having to wait hours after the game to watch a 30 second highlight clip on “the championship” on channel 5 or some shit. It made it all so much more unattainable and valued when you heard someone talk about us on the radio or if one of our games was on sky etc.

You can have too much of a good thing. And the good thing can be ruined by money and goalkeepers pretending to be hurt.

I miss getting home from HR and waiting for the pink to be delivered. There would be a queue outside and the telegraph van would pull up with a pile of the pink. Get home and read the match report.
I used to leave HR, have a couple of beers to celebrate or drown my sorrows, normally the second one, then buy a Pink for my grandfather when he became too infirm to go to games.

Great post mate, I too have lost the excitement when we score, used to be raw, now you get told off for swearing.

The football now is absolutely shite compared to as little as 20 years ago.
Footballers are fitter now and can run faster. That is it . Recruit someone who can run fast and then try and turn them into a footballer.

Going to football now is safer. Facilities are miles better than in the 1970s - 1990s.
I remember a player called Archie Gemmill running the whole length of a pitch in a Nottingham Forest shirt that was almost unrecognisable due to the conditions and a pitch that resembled the Somme . He somehow managed to do it like he was playing on a snooker table , before slotting the ball home in a manner rarely seen in today's game where the pitches are perfect.

Everything in today's football experience is better except for the possession- based dross that is fed to us week in , week out. The likes of Grealish would have thrived much more 20 years ago before the crap set in . Yet gates are up, football is more popular than it's been for decades, so I'm clearly in the minority.

Fitter players in the model of 24 man squad's and because half them can be switched mid game, I don't by this at all I'm afraid!

Today's players are fitter . They have access to better training facilities, better nutrition etc. They can do footballing tricks that look genuinely great on the internet . They are trained , as you say , to play more versatile roles . So do I agree with you on what you say? Yes.
All the more sad then that what we watch is mindless dross, where it's all about possession and don't-you-date-shoot-outside-the-penalty-box-in-case-you-miss (unless you're Eccles) . Where are the players that actually have you on the edge of your seat, who break the mould, who instinctively gravitate to free flowing attacking football and entertain ? It's not Coventry City particularly, it's everywhere outside of the very best Premier League big 5 ( I don't include Spurs)

Remember when goalkeepers took proper goal kicks and you had a 50/50 chance of winning it half way up the pitch instead of passing it backwards and forwards across the six yard box and losing it 30 yards out .

I'm just not convinced that all these methods of measurement prove anything, it just seems to indicate that like this indicators of fitness etc seems to produce the average and not the excellence.
Don't what that means I'm long in the tooth so maybe I'm just out of touch.
