But on much heavier pitches and in a game that was more physical generally
Absolutely. I always recall around 20 years ago going to an event where Tommy Smith was guest speaker. He was sent out every game by Shankley with the sole intention of maiming the opposition centre forward within the first 5 minutes.

The injuries are mainly to our fringe players in fairness, Cam Pring aside. McGuane is usually on the bench behind the likes of Bird and Knight. Should be a good game this, I think we’re taking a decent ish following too.

Bobby Gould or George Curtis used to batter the opposition goalie at the first corner. Never mind the ball, get on with the game.
Shankley described the City under Cantwell as playing alehouse football.
Revie's Leeds were a great team but a bunch of thugs. Jack Charlton said he had a book of players he was going to get.
Souness, when he played in Italy broke a players (arm I think it was) in the tunnel.
My brother knew Dobson's dad. Kenny Dagleish told Dobson (when he was at Blackburn) to virtually maim his opposing winger at half-time.
Think Tommy Smith really struggled to walk in later life.
Remember George Curtis hitting the Charlton centre forward at the Valley so hard, he ended up in my lap. George absolutely flattened Dougan on several occasions, yet they were great friends off the pitch.

Think both Eccles and Saka have played the role before for us. Not sure on the academy but the gulf is huge.

Think Eccles started as RWB as well but someone will correct me I’m sure
Yes he played at Sunderland a couple of seasons ago and that was the worst game I have seen him take part in. After that he was good there on occasion.

Bristol have apparently sold 2600. Should be another solid crowd.

Genuinely no idea what to expect. These are the sort of home games I used to be confident in. Less so now.

Exactly, getting pissed off seeing away fans enjoying themselves far too much this season, id Just take any win, think we’ll just nick it 🙏

No. We just look stronger defensively.
I appreciate its not the long term goal, but it will do for now, I certainly feel more confident when we play it.
Well it would be pretty embarrassing if we didn’t look stronger defensively when we have 5 at the back.

When Wright or EMC are fit again we must go back to a 433.

Think this a difficult game, like all of them tbf.

Got to work hard, same team as last week and see if BTA can add some money on his price tag.

And given how poor we've been defensively I don't think it would do any harm just to tightening things up for a spell.

If we do go 5 at the back, I can see us keeping a clean sheet, but think we will not look very threatening up front. So wonder if we will manage to score. But TBH if we keep a clean sheet then it’s progress.

Have a feeling this might not be too pretty to watch. Lots of sideways and back passing to avoid losing possession. I think it has draw written all over it.
