at the risk of sounding a bit over the top, yes we do, and there are some horrible parallels in terms of a dictatorial leader banging on about becoming the ultimate power blaming all problems on minorities and foreigners, and that concept becoming more & more prevalent.
I think the country is so split and so successful already that some parallels with 1930’s Germany don’t fit but there are lessons to learn
Friends and neighbours are not our enemies we need to engage them in discussion about whether the racist memes and social media rabbit holes are truth or to divide
Was really hard to keep engaging with tories much harder with reform voters but it has to be done and they with me
Far more unites us than divides us

Nice one Dim Dom. Can't wait for the day when you put together a coherent well researched comment on here that is based on truth. You lap up the MAGA Trump stuff its very funny like a little fan boy. Do you have a poster of him in his bedroom that you tug yourself off to each night? Please go to university and hopefully don't have children until you have dome so. The world will be a nicer place without nasty, loveless, racist, mysoginistic gammons like you spreading extremism and hate about. FRO.
Gammons? That's just a cut of pork.

They probably aren’t, but its another stick to beat people with.

Can anyone show that what Trump said about the recruitment policies was inaccurate. It is entirely within the range of possibility that it was an entirely factual statement. The BBC has found some archived pages showing that what Trump said is accurate.

I think you should have said “ if it impacts safety” rather than “when”. There‘s no evidence either way.

Having said that, the concept of preferentially hiring people with severe intellectual disability or psychiatric disability seems to potentially be high risk in this industry - dependent upon which type of roles are being hired for. I’m not sure how many of us would want to be piloted by someone with a psychiatric disability. Or a heart condition for that matter.

The colour of a pilot’s skin of itself makes no difference.
I'm sure every single person working as a Air Traffic Controller has to pass very high tests of mental ability, reliability and reactions in a crisis. Not sure a few dimwits on here, who just swallow all Trumps reactionary outburst would pass that test! He wouldnt criticise the US army helicopter as he blows smoke up the militaries arse ( unless they are black, female or gay soldiers)

Thing is he started off quite well and actually showed a bit of decorum for once.

Started off with a moment's silence. Even said 'we're all one big family' or something like that.

Then he just couldn't help himself and reverted to point scoring and bigotry. And then threw half of the aforementioned 'family' into the fire.

Hopefully you keep that statement to hand
Course it has an effect on our lives as the USA has for over my whole lifetime for good and bad

In what way has your life been impacted. What happened last time he was in town?

Resorting to pure abuse now... nice fella. Stop embarrassing yourself and just try and stop posting nasty and distorted stuff all the time. Life is too short. Everyone on here likes a debate but you take ignorance and hate to the highest level.

My office used to be in the air traffic control tower and anyone that thinks getting a job in ATC requires you to be the best of the best is kidding themselves. You need a handful of GCSEs!

What you do need though is training and regular testing to make sure you're up to the job. Not sure I buy in to the idea that ATC in the US is a free for all and anyone in a minority can just turn up and give it a go.

People only give a shit about safety when there's an incident. Look at the rail strikes here, numerous posts that there shouldn't be strikes which would have meant waving through the lowering of safety standards.

Second question - it’s different he has more power than before without the same checks and balances

Great question about how has my life been impacted

Probably around having to defend social justice or compassion or kindness with friends especially church friends

I'll let him off then, teenagers minds are warped easily and I was no different I'm ashamed to say. Long time ago tho and before 2 stints at uni when you actually learn about importance of evidence and facts not tub thumping anecdotes and conjecture.

When I was at uni Charles I remember attending a union gathering as the rep on my course.

There was a motion to raise money for striking miners (we were in UDM territory) to come and picket. I suggested a counter motion to do one for the police. I made some new friends that day.

Pointing out objectively stupid things he has done in this context isn’t derangement it’s fact. He wants to dismantle the regulatory state-in the context of aviation that will make accidents more likely.

It's got nothing to do with this incident.

Everyone is quick to get outraged, and whilst I agree his comments are unsavoury and inappropriate at this time, if you want to challenge stupid policies about aviation then you also need to look at some from the last few years that would have potentially had time to make an impact.

You can't use this moment to get mad about Trump and his policies and not objectively look at what's happened in the past which is potentially highly relatable. It makes you look ignorant and driven by nothing other than your hatred for Trump.

The funny thing is - other than the total nonsense budget attack on business - I find myself back to the future with a Thatcherite chancellor

Would be interested in your take on the theological “ladder of love” arguments taking place randomly between JD Vance and Rory Stewart right now.

Years ago I knew someone in ATC who was epileptic which did surprise me

What are those?

The has been a real problem with staffing of ATC centres, which has coincided with an alarming rise in near-misses at US airports. There are many articles online speaking about it and saying that an accident was going to happen the way things were going.

The thing Trump is on about is genuine, as you've seen very qualified ATC operators turned away because of the colour of their skin (they were white). This goes back some way, and some of the policies have since been overturned. There is actually a lawsuit representing around 3000 ATC controllers who were rejected, and ironically that is exactly the same number CNN (the biggest Trump critics of all) say the US is short of.

There were some examples of the FAA temporarily putting the brakes on hiring so it could replace 'race-blind hiring rules' with a 'Biographical Assessment' stratagem designed to hire more minorities. The criteria to hire ATC staff changed dramatically, as the questionnaire sought irrelevant information. By contrast, holding a pilot’s license — a major advantage for a controller — was worth next to no merit. And having valuable experience as an air traffic controller in the military was actually worth no points at all on the assessment.

I'm not saying if this is related to what happened or not, it's far too early to say - which is why what he said was stupid and insensitive. If you are going to have a go at Trump (and I certainly agree some of his ideas here are wrong) then there should be a wider level of challenge, as there is reason to be objective about these things above. There shouldn't be any compromise when it comes to things like air safety.

Just to be clear on the timeline:

Jan 20: Trump fires the head of the FAA

Jan 21: Trump freezes hiring for air traffic controllers

Jan 22: Trump disbands the Aviation Safety Advisory Committee

Jan 28: Trump issues a retirement demand to existing ATC employees

Jan 29: First mid air collision in the US for 16 years.

So whose fault is it?
Are you saying that within 9 days the accident is a direct result of Trumps actions?
