So lot's of people hyper - ventilating wanting the return of "Cody" the goal machine.

Let's analyse Leon Clarke's record against good old Cody.

Now one poster said many of McDonalds paltry 59 games away from league two have been in the Championship and this is unfair. So lets see just how they both measure up in League One.

"Cody" - 29 appearances in League One - 5 goals
Leon Clarke - 62 appearances in League One - 35 goals

Well its a close call.

McDonald wasn't given a fair crack at it tbf. Get him fit surely he's better than Clarke? Even Rod is better than Clarke

Let's be honest... Clarke has scored the most goals from 3 yards out in Europe...(Probably)

That is such a moronic post it is hardly worth debating. Why has Clark only ever played 5 games below League One and O Donovan and McDonald played the vast majority of their games in Non League / Irish League or Division Two? McDonald has never been first choice with any manager other than at Gillingham.

To even mention O Donovan is plain stupid. Clark scored more goals last Friday than he has in 3 years.:facepalm:

Get him fit?????????

FFS he is paid to be fit, and clearly like Fat Freddy its low on his priority list which given his chance to be a pro footballer unlike the rest of us, is an utter disgrace.

Looks fit enough playing for gillingham. Doesn't fit mr's system - but then nor does Clarke. We need to find some more options as our system of playing on the break with one up has been found out and teams have wised up to it

I cannot get my head around the negativity around Clarke, he is a proven goalscorer he just needs more support around him. If Cody was so great, he would have proved himself in training to get a shout in the first team, clearly by being shipped out to a lower league club speaks volumes here.

People are criticising Clarke for being lazy, flat footed, playing poorly even when scoring, scoring goals anyone could score.

Perhaps it's because his first name is Leon as this all sounds strangely familiar.

Clarke is on 16 goals. There are 14 games left. It is an odds on certainty that by the end of the season he will have 20 goals.

If anyone thinks that a player who can get 20 goals a season is crap or that ROD is better, then words fail me.

Some of the greatest strikers in history never scored from over a yard out, look at sumo quinn, who is probably the best goal poacher iv'e seen in my years of supporting. A goal is a goal whether its 3 yards or 30 yards.

simple fact, CLARKE IS SHITE, but he is better than our other strikers. Anyone that talks him up is off their head his overall record is mediocre, thats why he is playing for us in league one. He is a typical striker that is good in a shite side i.e scunny, chesterfield, no pressure or expectation and as soon as he gets a contract he does fuck all, hes like a league one adebayor. In a decent side like we currently are he looks all at sea and frankly we deserve better! Grendel/Otis do your worst, i care about one stat, the league table at the end of the season

Stop with the "Clark has scored 16 goals this season" crap. He has NOT scored 16 goals for us, he has scored just 5 for us, and only 3 goals for us in the 9 games since he signed his nice new 2.5 year contract.
Tell me something Otis/Grendel - just how much good does it do Ipswich that McGoldrick scored so many goals for us when he can only score 1 goal in 7 games for Ipswich? It doesn't matter to Ipswich how many goals he scored for Coventry, and it doesn't matter how many goals Clark scored for other theams - he is not doing the job for us!
3 goals in 9 games since signing his contract is not a good striker, just as Ipswich fans must be thinking McGoldrick's 1 goal in 7 games does not make a good stiker. I don't care how many goals he has scored for other teams this season, he is not doing the job for us, and he is probably getting more chances per game than any other striker in this league.

I am not anti-Clark, I just don't think he has proved himself to be the striker we need, and I think he is going backwards since getting his contract.

What I fail to understand is why we keep sending in high crosses towards Clarke/Elliot - neither of them are special in the air but they do have good control with ball at feet. Again and again yesterday we saw the same high ball in from corners and crosses - to absolutely no effect.

Clark has scored 4 league goals in 6 games. Your stats are all over the place. All goals scored when he signed his contract.

Clarkes biggest crime is that he isn't McG - he is a good League 1 striker, as his being in the top 3 scorers shows. In the last two games we have missed a myriad of chances and from what I saw not all of them were missed by Clarke - we cannot simply rely on one player to score all the goals, the midfield has to contribute and surely in the host of corners we have had recently you would have expected one of the centre backs to find the net.

In the 6 games I have seen him, I am yet to see him play well

mother, Cody is anything but quick:( wish he was

He was pretty quick for yesterdays goal! Clarke wouldn't have reached that-we've played 5-6 through balls on the deck for him to run onto in the past 2 games and he's been outpaced by lumbering CB's every time.

But Clarke has a better record at this level and in theory more physical presence and all-round game. We just haven't really seen it because he's not suited to our formation-but neither is Cody, is he? We know who is, but he's proving irreplaceable.

Biggest problem for me is that we've got a big man up front and are hence playing a lot more long balls-from what Robins says post-match, against instructions: it's just the easy option on a quagmire of a pitch to see the big man up front and launch it at him. He's totally isolated, and two massive CB's like Yeovil's yesterday absolutely lapped it up. At least with Elliott next to him he gets more support and looks more of a goal threat, but our defence is seemingly too weak to cope without a screening 5-man midfield. If anyone can work it out it's Robins-and from what he's saying, I think we will see Cody in Sky Blue before the end of the season. A match-sharp Cody can contribute at L1 level IMO.

Also-look at Clarke's record: he scores goals when he's at clubs in the bottom 6 of the division. He's suited to playing on the counter, not to a team expected to dominate-thus facing opposition with men behind the ball sitting deep. Like Crewe and Yeovil ;)

I would prepare a constructive argument but it would be lost on Grendel and his clear lack of football understanding so instead I will go with this; leon Clark is shit.

In other words you are incapable of putting a constructive argument so resort to a rather juvenile response. Impressive stuff. I'm so glad you hadn't educated me with your far more impressive knowledge and intellect. You'd leave me floundering.

Have only see Clarke play once this season (apart from the Preston game on TV), against Oldham. To me he looked slow to anticipate and react to balls being played through to him, meaning making his run far too late. He won only one ball in the air all game and apart from a few flicks with his back to defence, for me , contributed very little all game. Having said that about the flick ons, he didn´t seem capable of holding the ball up either.
I know I´ll probably get slated, and I understand his goal scoring record is proven, but on the evidence of that game, I think we need somebody who can offer a little more to the team.

Look the abuse Clarke is getting is way out of context. He has an excellent record in this league and there is no sign of that declining. Comments like his goals are easy are ludicrous. He is more than capable in League One and in the context of players we can afford is as good as we get.

If he had replaced O Donovan none of this negativity would be there. He cannot be accountable for replacing McGoldrick. He will score 20 goals in League One so that purely is his function.

People should lay off and give him a chance.
