Yes but we have to have to have some kind of quality filter on the issue, I mean how much can you learn about the quality of a club's academy by the number of players they have developed for Wales or Ireland or Zimbabwe, not exactly powers in world football are they? I would suggest the acid test is number of full England internationals. You're right Lennon was at City, where he was failing, he then moved to Crewe and after working under Gradi went on to win the league cup twice with Leicester, 5 SPLs with Rangers and become captain of his country. Similarly with Platt and Savage, who were both rejected by United as youngsters but after working with Gradi went on to highly successful careers, in the case of Platt, successful being an understatement.

Celtic I should say.

So are we picking those that came through the youth system or those that came through other youth systems but signed young? Because that opens up a lot more names.

Send me a list of players who have spent a substantial part of their development, up to the age of 21 shall we say, at your club that have gone on to receive full England honours. I'd be very surprised if it stood up to ours.

Neil Lennon and David Platt came through Manchester City and United academies from sources online, can we claim we developed Dennis Wise and Don Hutchison?

This has already been addressed, both players report in their autobiographies that their careers were going nowhere until they came to Crewe under Dario Gradi.

Pretty much every player who has joined us in the past 10 years has had their career going nowhere :( We could go on to argue that we turned Marlon Kings career around, Keiran Westwoods career, Ben turners, Robbie Keanes... the list goes on

We had Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy both here under the age of 21. One was sold to Inter Milan and now have nearly 200 caps and 70+ goals between them

We're talking about youth players though, Platt and Lennon were both 19 when they came to us.

Not sure if this has been asked before, but why the hell have we still got Crewe fans on the forum

I don't think you can argue that Bellamy and Keane have been more influential than Platt and Lennon. All four were international captains. Lennon would have earned far more than 40 caps for NI were it not for sectarian intimidation. Platt won 62 caps for England, scoring 27 goals, not bad for a midfielder. It is unlikely that, had Bellamy and Keane been English, they would have won 62 caps for England, seeing as both tended to find themselves surplus to requirements at club level. As for being sold to Inter Milan, Platt was sold to three Italian clubs (Juve, Sampdoria and Bari) for a combined total of nearly £17 million, crazy money for that era. He is generally accepted to be English football's most successful export to serie A. Robbie Keane was an utter failure at Inter to put it mildly, making a grand total of 6 appearances and scoring 0 goals. Platt also excelled with England, representing them at three major tournaments. Keane and Bellamy only have Keane's appearance at the 2002 world cup between them. In terms of major honours Lennon and Platt (16) absolutley rout Keane and Bellamy (3). So I don't think a pair of moderately talented journeymen like Keane and Bellamy are apt for waving anyone's cock with.

Your academy is just as good as ours, I'd be surprised if one other person in England agreed with that statement. 2 players sold to villa and united for total of £8 million in the past year. Which academy product in your first team comes close to the ability of Luke Murphy?

Conor Thomas (Liverpool on loan) he had a bad injury in preseason (Deegan you :jerkit: ) and if it werent for that, he'd be up there with the best L1 CM and probably would've gone to the prem by now, and Gael Bigirimana (at Newcastle) and that's just last season for CM, funny because Westwood is at Villa, doing ok, but Villa are going to get relegated. Bigi is touted the next Tiote up there, and many up there think he could be a 'next big thing' and he could play for England in the future, not my opinion, there's.

I admire Powell and Westwood as players and hope they play for England 1 day, but that said, they haven't achieved anything yet and could end up dog shit, I don't want that, but they could. That Murphy is decent, would start for CCFC, but chill out, he isn't the best thing since sliced bread is he.

Never known a club's fans' brag about being a selling team like Crewe! Bless 'ya.

Mark Hateley, Jay Bothroyd, Danny Sturridge, Stuart Pearce, Danny Thomas, Chris Kirkland off the top of my head have all played for England having come through our youth ranks / joined as youngsters.

I would personally counter Platt with Hateley (or maybe Stuart Pearce). Lennon was shit. Worse player than Keane or Bellamy hands down.

Give it up u prick, cant believe your still on this forum, can the mods not ban these fools, they have obviously joined this forum so ban them like u did to ouch or this could get violent.
And by the way robbie keane sent to inter for 12million, he set up 2 goals for ronaldo, then a manager change pre season scuppered his chances so hardly a failure.

Who would you replace with Murphy in our midfield? I actually think Thomas is better and he struggles to get in our team currently (in fairness, as you say, partly due to injury).

Robbie Keane has accumulated nearly 100 million in transfer fees.

Lets be fair, surely you are not counting a trophy won in Scotland as a 'major honour'

Keane + Bellamy 193 caps and 73 goals

Also Stuart Pearce with over 70 England caps

Over 1100 club appearances between them hardly means they are surplus to requirements

40 caps for a nation lower in the Fifa rankings than Wales and ROI, my I am impressed

Well everbody knows the reason Lennon only got 40 caps, there have been numerous books written about it. Robbie Keane's transfers amount to £75 million according to wikipedia you've been a little over generous with your rounding up. With regard to Keane you've got to admit he's been about - failed at Inter, failed at Leeds, failed at Liverpool and was, in the end, even rejected by Spurs where he had enjoyed a modest period of relative success (in that he won 1 league cup, Lennon won two with Leicester, even disregarding all the SPL titles he won in Glasgow). Then there was that humiliating period when he was loaned here there and everywhere before finally finding an appropriate home at Los Angeles Galaxy. Surely the only really valid measure of a player's worth is in the silverware he wins. Whilst both Bellamy and Keane showed flashes of ability, really, overall, they flattered to deceive and lacked that extra bit of ability needed to be successful in the way that the likes of David Platt, indisputably, was.

Who cares about the past. If you think you team is better than ours, take a look at the league table.
