Sheffers: Sign or Release? (2 Viewers)

Gary McSheffery is out of contract at the end of the season, so obviously theres gonna be that question of whether City will sign him up or let him go. Personally i think we should keep him. Granted, he has been awful this season, worst i've ever seen him play, but he's a good player, he proved that last season. He's lacking in confidence, fitness and right now his crossing and shooting is woeful. In the summer he needs to knuckle down, find his confidence, work on his striking and crossing and start over next seasn, cus he is still a good player IMO, its just been a bad time for him. I hope we keep him but with him being a high earner, it could depend on who owns the club when renewal time comes around. But what does everyone think? Should we sign him up or let him go? And what do you think City will do?

Keep him, he's better than Terry Henry....or so the under 12s in Block 15 keep claiming.

When we enter administration and every player is up for sale, we'll see how sought after he is by the number of offers we receive for 'Mr Coventry', won't we?!

i think we should let him go then we can go back to having countless threads about him coming back as mr coventry :facepalm:

I think he should be released. Age and wages count against him. His salary could be better spent improving the team, as well as trying to find a younger, better replacement (although good left sided players are quite hard to find).

Are we sure he is out of contract? Didn't he sign a further contract extension when Ken Deluded was giving them like confetti to the likes of McPake and Bell?

Either way, on balance I'd let him go. But, if he finishes the season well (I know, not likely!) I would be tempted to keep him. I really want to see him playing up front, or just off the main striker, left wing just does not seem to suit him.

release him he is a shadow of his former self..neither forest or leeds wanted him when he went there on loan ..1 good game in 10 is simply not good enough..i have said it before i can see him going to northampton as boothroyd likes signing explayers..or maybe luton as he was always going on loan there

Or send him to Wrexham to play with the old boys?

I dont think he's being played in the right position. His crossing is poor so why are we playing him on the left wing? He played behind the striker last season and look how well he did. I know he wont be like that again this season but it could be something to think about next season if we keep him, cus he's not a left winger. He hasnt got the pace, crossing ability or the agility to play there anymore. He's always been an attacking midfielder, so why not use him in that role?

Didnt he get all his goals for us and brum from the left wing in his prime?

Back in the day Nick, back in the day, he just hasn't got what it takes anymore and we all know that and I'm sure SP does as well mark my words he will be dropped soon.

I'd say keep him.

If the rest of the squad are performing to their best we should be allowed one luxury player - he is capable of moments but in a bad team looks awful.

Let him go in my opinion!

He's done good for the team in the past but this season hasn't warrented him a new contract!

Little bits here and there don't cut in my view.

The wage money freed up by him going should be used to bring in a younger left sided winger (maybe early to mid 20's) who has youth AND experience behind him.

Thanks for providing my laugh for the day. How he can be defined as a luxury player is beyond me! Surely having a luxury is owning something good.....

Players' best positions change as their careers go on - Liam is dead right, Franck should get a chance on the left to allow the Jenno Bailey partnership to dominate midfield. Macca isa canny second striker IMO

That's a good point TC!

I'd compare McSheffrey to the Tesco low priced own brand stuff.

Sometimes the stuff on offer is great but most of the time it's a pile of crap lol

He will surely realise his negotiating position has weakened and will probably be seriously concerned about his ability to get a decent offer elsewhere, so I think we could potentially resign on a 50% wage cut and at that point he becomes a decent value player again.

McSheffrey in my opinion has always been overrated and a very selfish player. We did well to get the 4million off Brumagem for him and should never have brought him back here but for some reason he was yearned for by supporters. If his contract is up then lets say bye bye. I think he will be one of many to be let go and we will have a very different squad next season to todays.

Bailey will most likely be going back to Derby, Jenno has disapointed as of late too. I think our midfield needs a radical overhaul next season, a complete turnaround, and hopefully Sheffers will still be here and will have sorted himself our so he can EARN a place in the team next year, cus Pressley is gonna put players in the team who EARN their shot. Its too late in the season to start fannying about with massive changes so the summer will be a cruccial time for us

Let him go unless he takes a massive wage cut, but even then only a year at a time. He's slowed down, fluffs everything in front of goal and gives away a lot of needless, senseless free kicks. I agree with the point about good left sided players being hard to find, but with his wages freed up I'm sure we could tempt someone.

Agree about midfield...Baker and Moussa are the only players worth keeping.

Wilson looks like he could cause a lot of teams problems especially at this level

and Christie even had a reasonable game yesterday..........reasonable...not good...but reasonable...

Look Warwick it's called support we support McSheffery because McSheffery wears the Sky Blue I don't agree that some idiots in blocks decide too boo him, doesn't mean that he has been player of the season and is up for next years Ballon Dor.

He is a Cov lad and maybe that is why there is more of a bigger defence from blocks 14 - 16, I am not going to praise McSheffery for a great season because his form isn't great and he hasn't looked the player we needed, but booing him isn't the answer and sarcastic comments like yours are the sort of plastic fans that are better away from the Ricoh IMO..

Concerning the thread and the question itself, the old saying is "Never go back" and I would say since Sheffers returned he hasn't been the player he was, but he is older, injuries have hampered him, less confidence and more pressure than what there was before he left for Brum. Saying that if he could sort his form out at this level he is a player that would be worth any team. I hope we sign him for one more year, reduce his wages and help him to try and regain the player we know he can be at this level!!

So this season is our best shot at promotion then? The team can't be that bad and we will end up with worse players.

Its really not. Thorn's draw's, poor home form, Shaw's dismal spell, this season hasnt been great and i think if we dont get a deduction next season, that will be our best chance. Pressley will bring in his own players, change the squad around and make it his team, which will likely be a very youthful team who play from the back and up to the front, not gamble on long balls

Providing the administrator keeps the good youthful players we may be ok. But we could not have expected,to be in with a shout based on our first couple of months.

Theres no guarentee we will go into Admin. Until we officially go into Admin we need to believe that we wont. And i have to admit i didnt think we would be this high up after the first 2 months. Loads of people say its down to one man but McGoldrick wasnt a one man team. He couldnt defend and attack and play in goal all at once. Its been a good turnaround and im proud of them for that but i think next season will be better. Hopefully Sheffers will sort himself out during the summer

He should never have got his last contract extension imo, so its an easy answer for me. Along with Wood and Bell (the latter who we're tied to because of the silly length of contract he was offered, and one he would have been silly to turn down in his defence) he is probably one of our higher earning players.

Im almost certain there are plenty of better players out there who would play for us on a cheaper salary than hes currently getting

Would be a useful squad player on massively reduced terms, if he'd take that i would actually keep him, otherwise best of luck in trying to get a better deal elsewhere
