12,000 Seater stadium - Anybody happy ? (4 Viewers)

It's almost certainly a 12,000 seater stadium based on recent discussions and quotes.

..... Seppalla Quote: "It will come from either acquiring the council-owned Ricoh freehold and surrounding development land to support club revenues; or from building a new stadium (potentially £25m, initially 12,000-capacity) with surrounding commercial land outside the Coventry border within five years."

..... SCG Notes : It could take 2 years to get planning permission (COULD!) but only 12 months to build. The build could be about £20m, plus £5m for the land, plus a contingency because construction is nearly always over budget.

..... Plus from earlier in years forum by TF : Based on Rotherhams stadium. Which currently has a 12,000 capacity and cost £20M with expansion as required to 16,000 and 20,000.

Is anybody realistically happy with this ?

A stadium that was 12000 capable of expanding to 20000 would be about right, we had no real demand attendance-wise to leave a 23000-seater in the first place.

There's the argument that it shows a lack of ambition and there would be a point where we'd end up needing to house 30000 fans, but then this is not a real thing anyway so much as a bargaining chip and these are just details to convince people it's definitely real and they're super serious cross their heart

It depends how easy it is to expand.

As said on the other thread, would there be much point if they were to build a 35,000 seater at the minute?

In theory (I don't know much about construction of stadiums) but if they could be 12k now, if we got promoted put another 10k on and then another 10k if we got promoted again. That way we wouldn't always have a half empty stadium.

Probably not doable, but it is on football manager...

What if we started building this 12k seater and got promoted this season? The demand is 15k there.

Coventry City aspiring to have a 12,000 seater stadium like Rotherham's? Outside of Coventry?

What????

Read that, then read it again and again and if it doesn't want to make you scream with anger at what SISU have done to this club, I despair.

2 ways of looking at this. You could look at it from an atmosphere perspective and it would be likely that a full ground every week would be a better atmosphere than a half empty one.

The flip side of that would be to look at it purely on a business basis. It will cost more in the long term to build a larger stadium in stages so if we are aiming to ever get back to the sort of attendances we had several years back financially it would make more sense to build a bigger ground now. The second business argument would be over lost revenue from one off matches. 12K sounds great but what if Wolves want to bring 6K or we draw Man Utd at home in a cup game, would the revenue we'd lose out on be greater than the cost of maintaining a larger ground?

if sh1tsu keep dis-engaging the fan base as they have been you could argue that 12,000 is to big.

its also a good indicater that their ambition doesn't match that of the fans. yet another reason for them to go.

I thought you'd finished with the club anyway?

According to many of here no one would go to this mythical stadium outside the City Centre anyway so 12K seems more than ample for the rest of us. It would only be a problem if there was a sniff of Wembley in the air.

I think they should start by building a 60,000 seater stadium and then knock the bits down when they don't get used.

Makes me livid that it's even being discussed but then I console myself with the thought that it will never happen.

12,000 is commercial suicide - less than 3 years ago when in the championship there were 28,000 v Leeds no sniff of Wembley we were on a good run Leeds are a big club, 12,000 codenms us to 1st Div lower championship level, We are at our lowest point for 50 yearts but that should not be a basis for thinking that 12,000 is a reasonable attendance. We need all fans, regulars as well as glory hunters, eventually we will push for promotion and 12,000 won't be big enough.

Was this SISU's tactic to move us out to Northants to distress the fans so that a 12,000 stadium in Warwickshitre although clearly worse than the Ricoh is a better option than Sixfields

Not big enough for a city what about away fans? This reduces home fans to about 8000 when you have areas segregated

It doesn't matter if they say it will be 5,000, 15,000 or 50,000, it will not be built. SISU don't have the money and they aren't going to find anyone stupid enough to finance it.

It's glaringly obvious, from their recent statements and machinations, that there is no substance to Plan A. The only plan is, and always has been, to get the freehold of the Ricoh.

I think 12k is low but I can see the angle of build it around 12K because thats where we are at present, last season at the ricoh crowds were 10-12K. So build it at 12k so we can have a good atmosphere BUT with the agreement and possibility of expanding should we get promoted. I dont see anything wrong with that. And if its a Highfield rd 2 even better. In saying that, Id rather be back at the Ricoh of course.

Small 12000 seater stadium. Tickets in short supply. More season tickets sold. No early bird discounts. No discounts for family or juniors. ----- Nah! SISU wouldn't do that would they?

If it'll never be built why are you all getting your knickers in a twist?

I don't trust SISU. They might use the stadium as a wedge to get into a larger land development.
They could build it because they said they would and have been forced into an embarrassing corner they need to get out of.

Their decisions up to now "appear" not to be based on CCFC fans expectations.

Your position Torch is what? You won't go to Northants, but you would go to a 12000 new ground 9 miles out of Coventry. Is your issue that you want a CV postcode, nothing to do with Sisu, size of ground, revenue potential, effect on local community. Is that it?

The 12 000 idea is nonsense.

Coventry is an expanding city and also is currently about 10th biggest city in England.

Coventry City were in the top division of English football for 34 years.

In the early years the average attendance was in excess of 30 000.

No doubt circumstances have changed, Coventry used to be a boom city and are no longer in top flight.

Look at Norwich and Southampton, similar clubs look at their capacity. Also look at Leicester and Derby similar size clubs in terms of fans and population. Do they
have a 12 000 capacity stadium?

Coventry attendances have been disappointing for many years I do agree. That is down IMO due to fickle nature of fans and continuous disappoints on the fields.

There is no reason with the right approach by all concerned and some overdue success on the pitch the crowds would exceed 20 plus. Once back in the prem they would be higher
and likely we would sell out games the majority of games. The prem is different now to when we left in 2001.

Having a stadium if 12 000 just makes no business sense. You only have to view the facts on unutilised support Coventry have, 30 K for JPT , 5K away supporters at MK dons and 11K at Man U away to show what is possible. Remember too we took 60 K fans to charity shield in 87.

A 12 000 stadium condemns to being also rans pretty much for ever. We have a great stadium at Ricoh Arena. The capacity is inline with potential as pointed out regarding
other similar clubs capacity and no of fans.

I wish the fans had shown up to games in bigger numbers over the last 40 years as they generally are disappointing.

Glad virtually no-one showing up for the 'SISU business inspired current home venue'

Lets get back to the Ricoh Arena and show what a club we really and can be, rather than this shambolic skeleton club we have been made into by SISU.

No, won't go to Northampton. Would I go to see City in a stadium "near" Coventry? Yes, I would. I don't come from Coventry and have never lived there so have always travelled. The Ricoh was farther for me to get to than HR. In the 70s and 80s I used to go to the Speedway like many on here no doubt did. They're not in Coventry either, but didn't stop us going.

Nope, nothing to do with postcode, SISU, size of ground, revenue potential (laughable coming from someone who doesn't want the club to own it's own stadium) or the affect on the local community. That's it.

So you decided not to watch your team all year not because they aren't in Coventry (or a host of other potentially worthy reasons) but because games are 20 miles outside your chosen 'going to games limit'. You have a geographic fetish. That's it.
Bizarre.

Yes, that's what it's all about. You're spot on, exactly right.

The concept of a 12,000 stadium she should be stated as unacceptable right from now, I doubt it will ever be built but it is inadequate, our last game at the Ricoh attracted that ie following a mid-table finish after a 10pt deduction against the mighty Orient it would have been a sell out. Also I am not sure if I will go to a new ground in Warwickshire, Brandon & Baginton - yes as it feels like Coventry, Bedworth / Solihull / Leamington - then no.

If SISU were to engage consultants and ask them where was the best place to build this stadium to maximise the number of fans they would say Coventry, a compromised stadium built because they have fallen out with the CCC is destined for failure. Don't think it will be built but equally need to let SISU know that many of us fans may not be attending if built in Bedworth.
