So...despite it being 'newsday Thursday', all seems to be quite on the Sky Blues front. So I thought I'd ask...

I was thinking about players who you may have felt were under-rated during their time at Cov. One player who I always thought was half decent but didn't get the credit I thought he deserved at time, was a winger called David Smith. He played in the late 80's if I recall and I remember him setting up a few goals from out wide on the left...think it was normally Speedie of Big Cyril on the end of them. Seemed to be a pre-cursor to the likes of Steve McManaman (with just as crap hair).

So my question for you isn't about forces of evil, but which player did you admire most but who didn't really get credit for their performances whilst playing for Cov?

Always thought Ian Butterworth was ok - made his name (ish) as a steady centre half and captain at Norwich. He left Cov for Forest in the same deal as that promising left back Stuart Pearce - now I wonder what happened to him?

Incidentally, thought David Smith looked like a world beater when he first broke into the team - and then became hopeless for some reason (a bit like Tommy English a few years earlier)

I was really impressed with Smith during his first full season (88/89). A genuine out and out winger. Usually Speedie was on the end of his crosses, Cyrille had decide by that time that he couldn't be arsed with goalscoring anymore (he scored 6 all season that year).

I always loved Paul Williams (not the shit left back). Will never forget his 35 yarder v Newcastle at HR (about 1999).

He was indeed - went on to score a few for West Ham.

I also quite liked the look of Laurent Delorge during the first season in the Championship. Thought he had so much potential but then he just disappeared.

When I first started going as a young lad I was in awe of how Stewart Robson bossed the midfield, seemed to always be the best player on the pitch every game I went to.

Was he highly thought of at the time?

I'd go with Paul Telfer. Worked hard for the team and chased every ball, pressing the other team hard constantly. I always thought the team looked and played better if he was in it even if it is was not always evident why to a layman such as myself.

I didn't know that - but I sure do now!


Did you know that Mick Quinn is the only person to score a hat trick on the opening day of the season - and then go on to put on 6 stone by the end of it!


Anyway - I have been lucky enough to see 2 Cov players score opening day hatrick (Dion being the other of course) - unfortunately saw Kevin Campbell do the same against us for Forest

David Cross is what most of the Coventry fans used to frustratingly shout to David Smith from the touchlines of Highfield Road

I think his last game for us may well have been the 3-0 opening day Quinn hatrick game at Highbury. He limped off early on (replaced by a young Dublin lad called Tony Sheridan - how the hell do I remember that!), and can't recall seeing him play for us again after that

I always liked Mike Marsh.....he always appeared to have a great first touch, composure & vision.

....oh, and Roy Wegerle.....frustratingly total shit & utterly brilliant....often in the same game....

.....mind you, it was the mid 90's & I was off my tits most weekends....so I could've imagined it all to be honest....

I've been lucky enough to see Hudson score a hat-trick on his debut and Graham Newton too and George Kirby but not on opening days of a season. I bet a young fan is saying who the hell were they !

I used to buy the video that came out at the end of the season with all the clubs goals on, David Smith provided some excellent crosses. Lovely hair as well.

I also think Stewart Robson was good, not sure he was underrated by anyone though.

Robert Rosario was superb in midfield in the season we sold him. From wiki (so must be true).... Rosario was a key provider of assists to the Coventry City attack of Peter Ndlovu and (after his arrival in November 1992) Micky Quinn. After Rosario was sold to Nottingham Forest for £400,000 on 2 March 1993, Coventry's goals dried up and they fell to 15th in the final table after spending much of the campaign in the top five.

What about our all time leading (pro rata) goal scorer. His pro rata scoring record for us was 6 goals a game yet he rarely gets a mention.

Chris Marsden was another who looked excellent in his brief spell with us.

I would love to have seen how good a player Lee Hurst became was it not for his ridiculous pre-season army camp injury.

Marsden always had time on the ball - why the hell we didn't sign him....

Liked Hurst also - real shame for such a young player.

Going back a bit further, I remembered being gutted at the time when Garry Thompson left. Never fulfilled his potential elsewhere - always gave everything for us - 81 League Cup run is a particularly fond memory.

On a serious note I use to like David Thompson. Great right foot, never stopped running and loved football.

Alan Dugdale and Bobby Mc Donald, two no-nonsense defenders back in the day when tackling WAS allowed.

McDonald, even given his reputedly shameful tactics in getting a move, is easily the best left back I have witnessed at the club.
Danny Thomas, as a couple of posters have mentioned earlier. You don't expect too much from your defenders, well maybe to have the ability to defend but he brought a bit of creativity to his play. Almost dare I say it, a footballing defender.
