Coventry story on radio in Brighton (8 Viewers)

Morning all.

I'm a Brighton fan who co-runs a weekly unofficial radio show / podcast on Radio Reverb, community radio in Brighton.

This week just gone, we had a Brighton-based Coventry fan, Rob Stevens, come on to the show to tell us about the ongoing woes your club is facing. For you, I suppose it's quite uppermost in your minds, and you're familiar with your story. For us, we wanted to know what was going on, as your story seems, well, a bit convoluted - though there are parallels with the nonsense Brighton went through from 1995-2011. We also wanted to know if there was anything we could do.

We just felt it right that a Coventry fan gets a chance to tell the story, as best as possible. We were then told it would take about five hours to tell it, so Rob made the best fist of it possible.

Most of the show is about Brighton, naturally, but Rob gets involved in all the conversations - especially on Brighton v Coventry matches of years passed - and he talks about it for 20 minutes or so during the show. You can hear it on www.albionroar.co.uk if you wish to listen in.

Oh, and apologies in advance for being a tad dismissive of the glorious city of Coventry. I'll call it banter for now.

Yeah, that.

Thank you.

But don't agree with everything Rob has said. Does sound like very biased reporting of our situation. Seem to be selective and anti-ACL. It did it for me when he became supportive of Les Reid.

Amazing how Rob fails to mention the JR outcome and the damning statement the judge made against SISU regarding there intentions to distess ACL to get the stadium on the cheap and another judges decision that the failure to pay rent was illegal.

Rob really hasn't done us city fans any justice by not reporting the whole facts to other club fans.

Now thinking about.. it not worth listening to as he will just ruin your day wondering how this guy got airtime and just reported this one sided un-balanced nonsense.

TLO .. what you hear from Rob is not the whole picture. You can happily stick around here and you may learn more about what the real issues are hopefully with some balanced arguments.

Incidentally, on that same website, if you click on the 'Archive' link, and scroll down to 'Players/Ex-Players' you'll see there's an interview with Chris Cattlin, who talks very warmly about his time at Coventry City. This was an interview from 2010.

Seeing as he's a hero of mine from his Brighton days, it still ranks as my favourite show we've ever done.

That stuff they say about 'never meet your hero...'? Piffle.

I appreciate that he didn't reveal the whole picture; time was the main enemy on that score. I don't think I appreciated how convoluted it was, to be fair, before I asked him in. He did say that to tell the story would take all afternoon, and he also mentioned that there was more than one side to this, and that the CCFC fans didn't specifically present a united front. Sounds a bit messy.

I'll have a read-through presently. Bearing in mind most of us a largely ignorant of the story, it's a pity you thought the whole exercise unworthy.

But from Brighton, however you wish to come to a satisfactory conclusion - good luck with it all.

By balanced argument by the way he means pro council and pro ACL piffle.

I wouldn't stick around if I were you. You'll be reporting on supporters who;

Hate franchise football - unless its Mk Dons
Are ok with franchise rugby - even if the local rugby club don't want it
Can't stand hedge funds unless they finance London Wasps
Want anyone to own the ground other than those who own the football club
Have never considered £1.3 million a year plus matchday costs in rent to be at a detrimental

Thanks for posting, I'll have a listen later. It's not that the topic is unworthy, just that Rob S tends to pop up when SISU are on the ropes, without balance people will remain largely ignorant of the story.

He didn't do a good job... All he was doing was attacking ACL but never pointed out many negative points of our owners dealing in this matter. In fact majority of the fans seem to put the blame on SISU door. Even the judge verdict on the Judicial review was damning.

All our owners have been doing since they came on board have been lying to the fans. The PR nonsense Rob was bangs on about but fails to mention the number of top PR agencies they had used to feed us bull and also how the owners threatened legal action against the Sky blue trust for posting a Guardian article about our predicament which after the JR and the verdict was not far from the truth.

Yes let's get Jack Griffin on the show for so e balance. Brighton fans will tune in and think they mistakenly tuned a party political broadcast for Coventry City Council.

So you'd agree that Rob S is at one end of the scale and Jack is at the other?

TLO, thanks for the post.

If I could sum it up in a nut shell, our previous owners started us on the road to this chronic mess and now our current owners, ACL and the Council, all dont give a damn about the club and are all pathetic bickering tosspots who are more intested in their own voices and vested interests than that of the club. Us the fans are at the bottom of their list of concerns and are treated like sh*t.

Now this statement is slightly more balanced than Rob S.

What I seem to be getting from this is (a) it's a mess (b) there doesn't seem to be an urgency to sort it out amicably (c) the fans are not united, on the back of (d) some apparently appearing to have their own hard-and-fast agendas, leading to in-fighting.

Has it really got this bad?

That pretty much sums it up and yes it is that bad.

I'd rather you didn't tell people not to listen to our show. Or don't people have their own minds?

Fair point.. just thought I save them 20 minutes of one sided drivel sprouted out by this Rob fella which has done non of us sky blue fans any justice.

So you have met Rob then?

Sorry ... but just feel this guy is not helping our cause. If you are representing us fans at least be a bit more balanced.

You are not allowed to on here. You have to worship the council - as Dai is proving. The PR bit from Rob is spot on. We had a couple of high profile people on here who disappeared once the move back was confirmed. Others like jack griffin remain but still oddly can't post a football related item.

High profile... who??

Well I have just told TLO that he made a fair point regarding this and maybe I was un-reasonable telling others not to bother listening. So please all you here..if you get the time maybe listen to this interview and make your opinions.

Yes he does or are you now the elected representative for all CCFC fans?

I don't pretend to represent all fans and I don't think any one fan or group ever can.

I was clear about the position GCBTTR are coming from – making sure ALL sides are called to account – and was hopefully also clear about what a massively complicated and involved mess this is once you scratch the surface.

That someone – and it seems to be just one person – can say not to even listen to the show because I am biased is both hilarious and slightly worrying at the same time.

I'll try and chip in a bit more on this later once I've got some time but I will just say thanks to TLO and the Albion Roar team who were very welcoming and do a great show. Felt like a Brighton version of the Nii Lamptey podcast which is high praise indeed :)

Yes not ideal !
But i would consider paying the clubs owners 1.3million a year in interest more detrimental ?
Obviously you always seem proud of the clubs owners and tactics !
Lets see how this highly inflated debt was created. Do you think its acceptable that a hedge fund who has millions to spend on solicitors,a new stadium mortgage ryton and factor ticket sales ?

Yeah, that.

Have you got a spare GK that knows how to play in goal?

A midfielder or two that will score the occasional goal that we could also loan?

Spare striker that knows how to score goals?

Not real infighting. We just have some who try to blame Coventry council for everything. They want the arena handed over to a hedge fund in the hope they would sell up and go. They want a local charity to get no money back from a hedge fund but to hand over what they gave money for. All you will ever hear from them is that they know that the hedge fund have wrecked our club and will tell you that they are shit when questioned. But otherwise all you will get is constant barracking off the other sides from them. They seem to think that the louder they shout and the more they ignore the truth the more of us will listen and believe them.

We even had them try to make out that the JR wasn't a massive defeat for the hedge fund. That was after the judge had a right go at them. I could go on all night and then all week.
