Dean Emerson was a brilliant player before bastard Megson broke his leg. I was there that day, lots of snow I seem to remember.

I don't think Hadji and Dublin ever played together at City, and Hadji only left after the club were relegated (which was understandable for both club and player given his pedigree), so I don't think it's really something one can hold against Dublin.

Hadji was crap in the relegation season anyway. Although getting £2.5m + Julian Joachim was an absolute joke.
I'd love to read that. Really interested about the late 90's. The American fellers book of the 97/98 season is a must read for any Sky Blues fan.

It goes without saying that Keane, McAllister, Dublin, Nuddy, Huckerby, Whelan, Gallacher et al made for great memories, but how about some memories of the lesser obvious guys?
For me, a prime example was Paul Williams' first season. He played CMF all season, and was this rampaging rhino of a player. Think he won player of the season and then, bizarrely, he never played in that position again. Great fun to watch that year though.

Whenever people were picking who they wanted to be on the playground playing football, all the other kids were Cantona, Fowler, Shearer etc I always chose either Peter Ndlovu or Dion Dublin. I'm white enough to be considered an albino.

Can anyone remember Paul Williams shinning in a screamer against Newcastle in the Robbie Keane season from about 30 yards out? I don't think me and my Dad celebrated, I think we just looked at each other with bewildered "did Willo just do that?" looks. :laugh:

Adam Ndlovu. I think the word at the time was that City were interested in both brothers, but only picked one because of the overseas player rule in place at the time. Not sure if there's any truth in it or not.

I remember that, pretty sure it was towards the East Stand although I could be wrong.
Willo was the only player I saw use his weaker foot to pass because his stronger foot would kick the ball out of the stadium.

A good post on an intersting subject. Dion was a great player for us, and served us well, and was shafted by glenn hoddle in not going to the World Cup.
His leaving did for me at the time leave a sour taste, as he refused to play, but then i wasnt party to the dark forces that were coming from above from BR, so I can probably now undertsand why he did what he did. It didnt bother me he went to Villa, but i would have preferred him going to someone other than a midland neighbour.
Going back to Wallace, I can just remember his era and him and Ferguson was a great partnership. Neither went on to great success after leaving us, I just wish they had stayed longer.
Gibson was a great goal poacher and saved us many time in the mid 80's Bobby Gould period, whilst Speedie was just fantastic, played for the cause and gave everything, whilst also scoring some class goals.
In terms of team players though, the 87 squad would be hard to beat. Played their hearts out for each other, and had a great team spirit, not like some of the players today who turn up for the cash and go through the motions (not at CCFC as they get little cash!)
Oh and Torchy you were right Megson nailed Dean Emerson, and I still cant forgive the t*sser for it today.

I remember his debut. He came on as a sub and absolutely skinned the fullback with his speed, then crossed the ball past the keeper for a simple tap-in (can't remember who got the goal though). Huck had serious wheels back in the day.

Yeah. I remember the fans booing Dion while he was a CCFC player after a long goal drought; it eventually led to him being put on the sub's bench, and his first sub appearance resulted in a goal (and he never looked back). He was also slammed for going to Villa, and had songs sung about his neck injury. For all the slating we may give Dublin about his Villa move, the CCFC fans weren't always innocent lambs.

Dublin is a legend for the club, he always gave his all (besides that one game but he was already on his way out and i'm more inclined to take his story than BR's) and the amount of fans who boo'd him when he appeared for Norwich against us a few seasons back made me slightly sick.
Yeah he went to villa, but he also head butted savage and for that, he just goes up even higher in the legend books (why couldn't he have done that while he was with us though).
He should have been playing for England, he was probably the best outfield player we've had not to play for England, guess thats what we got for being an unfashionable club.

Dion never moved, which was part of the reason he went to the Villa, stayed in the same house, kids would not have to switch schools....
Although he wasnt with us long i remember Micky (sumo) quinn with fondness. He called himself the 'fastest man in football over a yard' and he knew where the net was. That christmas when we beat liverpool 5-1 and the villa 3-0 was special and i went to highbury for the first game of the season when he got a hatrick assisted by Roy wegerle and we won 3-0. Liked a beer ,a bet ,his grub and played top fight football, what a star.

it was a hoof from nearer 40 odd yards, pretty sure it was a long ball nothing more, that was a odd game,
2 of the best goals i remember was froggys screamer against everton and Chippo`s blast from almost an impossible angle v Leeds
its hard to remember him having a bad game. i loved Malteeza ... as for Keane, funny i remember watching him sprint from about 1 feet away from me towards the goal ... his feet were so fast, and his touch !! that ball seemed to sit on his feet when he sprinted, pure class the pair of them, if only we had kept Keane, he could have kept us up for years... still be there now

I think 99% of fans have forgiven DD now, especially since he did work for Sky and said nice things about us. The worst thing was him refusing to play in a League Cup game at Luton and us getting beat.

I'm in the 1% then. A player should never refuse to play for his club. You can't get more unprofessional than that. I was one of the ones who'd travelled down to Kenilworth Road too.

DD should have been an all time skyblue legend in my eyes, but that went up in smoke when he left to go to the Villa.
I wouldn't have held it against him at all, if he had moved to any club other than them, after the very good years service he had given us.
I still to this day havn't ever been as gutted about a player leaving Cov as I have when he left.

Not that it matters. But was at a wedding in the summer sat next to Dean emerson. Nice guy, bit before my time so was good to hear some of his banter about what went on in the 80's etc!!!!

I never could get used to the site of Dublin in a Villa shirt! I'm surprised nobody's mentioned his spell at Leicester, though: a double-Judas! Still, a tremendous player that we never truly replaced; he deserves to be remembered as a legend of the club for his dedication and devotion during a period in our history when we looked consistently certain of relegation. It was Dublin that kept us competitive more often than not. A true leader and a superb role-model. In hindsight, he was under-appreciated. He was one of those rare players that can instil a certain pride in you when you watch them play for your club by their sheer effort. Not to eulogise him by any means, but his impact was immeasurable, especially in 1996/97. I think it's a shame he had such a mixed spell at Villa, because he deserved a more substantial England career.

I always liked Alan Green. Unfortunately for him he played at the same time as the Fergi/Wallace combination. Similar player to Wallace in a lot of ways, and also new where the net was.

The Stein ~ Hutchinson partnership was the number one for me, but Dion was a very shrewd buy by Phil Neale, though he was slated for it at the time.
