UKIP are definitely eating into the Tory votes in the north east, well Sunderland anyway. It will be interesting to see if this pattern continues across the UK. Although there's speculation that Nigel Farage is going to finish in third in the seat he's running for because the turnout has been higher than expected because people want to make sure he doesn't win. Its going to be an interesting night and I'm now debating how long I'm going to stop up.

There was no chance of Tory win there so it was more of a protest vote.

I guess the question for the Lib Dems now is can they ever recover from this? They're losing their deposits left right and centre and coming 4th and 5th. In Castle Point they got 80 votes. They might have expected it to be bad but they wouldn't have imagined it being this bad.

Looking like Labour totally wiped out in Scotland and potentially a clear sweep for the SNP.

The one thing all the experts are agreeing on is that there will be serious questions about first past the post and the whole way the political system in the UK works.

It's crap and an insult. I'm no fan of UKIP, but as it stands now at 6 a.m., they have 3.5m votes and 1 seat and yet the SNP have 2m less votes, with a total of 1.5m votes, yet have over 50 seats. How on earth is that a fair system?

The simple answer is, it's not and it leaves a bad taste in the mouth.

Prediction is Conservatives with 34% share, Labour also with 34% share, UKIP with 12% share, the Lib Dems with 8% share, the SNP with 7% share and the Green's with 4% share.

Yet we have another Conservative government. It's simply not a fair system at all and now, though the SNP only have 7% of the vote, they are now in position of power whereby they can argue to the PM that the austerity measures should be brought to a halt in Scotland, because they are the main party in their country by a country mile.

I didn't vote Conservative but had a feeling that they would do well under the present system. Scotland were never going to vote for anything but for their own. The Tories were never going to get close to the majority of people vote for them but do well with the same amount of voters as Labour. Even the bookies got it wrong. 6th May 14:35 I got 14/1 on a Tory majority. 7th May 17:31 I took 13/2 on a Tory minority government. But under the present system they look to either be getting a very slim majority or only be a couple short. Ukip are going to get more than a 1/3 of their vote and not have much of a say.

I recall pollsters saying back in 2010, that if people wanted to rise up against the government for the next coming 5 years, the Lib Dems would be the easy target and most likely to suffer badly as a result.

They missed the chance to be a progressive force, and took the short term grasping of the crumbs of power instead.

They deserve to fail for that alone, but highly, highly concerning that they then let the country swing even more right as a result.

The Lib Dems did a few things wrong. The biggest was getting into bed with the Tories. A lot of their voters went for them as they were not Tory voters and didn't trust Labour. My wife had voted Lib Dems for as long as I have known her. But she didn't vote for them last time and never will again. Ukip look as though they could become the 3rd party.

Thatcher changed all that for me though and I have never voted Tory again since, cos for me, that woman did irreparable damage to this country and made us a greedier, less caring society.

Agreed on that. I must admit that I fall into a portion of society that doesn't feel the maximum effect of Government policy which perhaps makes me less passionate on certain issues. I welcome a referendum on Europe which the Tories have promised

Well it gets mentioned that without Scotland the tories would have been in power unbroken between 1950-1997. The reality is if it weren't for Scotland, England would have gotten sick of the tories much quicker. That will probably happen in England in the future now to be honest.

As for PR, it will be interesting to see the lib dems position on it now, as fptp has probably saved it from complete wipeout.

Well Nick Clegg says Lib Dems are the party of integrity and fairness, so he has to stick by PR surely.

Funnily enough I had a customer who yesterday predicted something like this. Scottish and said that the SNP would romp home and crush Labour and the Liberals. He'd voted when the polls opened and then flown south for work yesterday and today. He said that he'd voted SNP and was proud to have done so.
