Ive always believed that if an organisation/ business can afford it and an employee is doing their job, pay rises should be at least the level of inflation. Those that work hard, go above and beyond should get more than inflation. Those that aren’t delivering shouldn’t expect a pay rise I’m a...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Yeah, if you look back at my previous posts I’ve always said flexible/hybrid working is best. I believe that a majority of civil service is now back to the office at least part of the time which should hopefully help productivity figures

Im not sure that’s correct though Dave https://fortune.com/2023/07/06/remote-workers-less-productive-wfh-research/ Many people will be more productive, many won’t be. It depends on role, personal circumstances, office/home environment, drive, experience, IT/Comms access, commute time etc etc...

The ONS obviously used various measures (which have gone on for years). The things that sprang to my mind across the public sector were strikes, ill health and WFH. They’ll be others around processes, focus on increasing people numbers in nhs but not the same on capital equipment, higher agency...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

It’s a genuine comment about productivity. If you read through the previous posts my point was that productivity should/needs to improve to maintain inflation/above inflation pay rises. There are unlikely to be strikes due to the proposed pay rises so that should naturally lead to higher...

As you know, I was talking about Reeves messaging yesterday ie what she can afford to do going forwards.

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Id argue if you keep giving people above inflation payrises without condition and improvement in performance (which is running below where it was/needs to be) you’re unlikely to have a business to employ any staff Ps ‘withhold pay from workers’ is a bit different to saying we can’t keep paying...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Im not talking about GDP and agree I don’t think public services should be involved in this. I’m talking about productivity. It was increasing pre covid (and since 2010) and although bounced post, hadnt increased again since 2022 and remains 6.8% below pre pandemic I personally think without...

Then there’s basics like processes in hospitals but it’s all been discussed before. We’ve now got more docs and nurses but something like 15% beds blocked by people who should be released/in social care. I presume that in itself causes a massive negative productivity impact I might be wrong but...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

These are ONS and IFS numbers not mine. Productivity was rising pre covid something has happened since. Public sector has received above inflation rises, i haven’t objected to this. I’ve just said in future you can’t continue with reducing productivity and higher than inflation payrises. As I...

The private sector will be driven more by tightness of labour market (is there limited amount of workers and large number of vacancies). Vacancies are dropping. Also if a business isn’t making large enough profits they can’t pay employees above inflation pay rises 🤷‍♂️ Soon find out anyway

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Its impossible to say without knowing where the problems lie but as there’s been a 7% drop since the pandemic somethings not right. As I mentioned yesterday I’d imagine it’s been impacted by things like strikes, illness and WFH (for some). If these don’t improve after decent pay rises we’re...

Do you want to discuss boring politics?

Agreed it’s not automatic but it is one of the usual components of secondary inflation. Demand has dropped and so has goods inflation but services inflation is still high (5.7%) and wage inflation has remained relatively high. We’re a service led economy so more people orientated so higher wages...

I’m not sure you can say that taking money away from pensioners to help cover above inflation pay rises for the public sector is your standard Tory policy

    The Olympics

Just heard Peatys been diagnosed as having covid. Recall in his interview after the race he said he’d woke up with a bit of a sore throat but no excuses. Gutted for him but what a performance to still come so close though. Hope he can still compete in the relays
