Don't get this obsession with contracts. If a player's out of contract he goes for nothing (I understand about Youth Tribunal compensation) But a club will surely offer what they think he's worth ( what they can get away with) whether his contract has one or two years to run. And if he's not...

We sort of played that at the end of last season but nobody covered Grimmer when he was forward so he had to cover back himself. Consequently he was criticised for his defending and struggled to last 90 minutes

You may well be right, after all Portsmouth don't play a style that suits Chaplin according to their fans, which is why he is surplus to their manager's requirements
