Ability or Application? (1 Viewer)

Think the problem we’ve got is we’ve got a group of players who are only good when they’ve got good players around them, maybe exclude wright, and EMC is just starting to show what he can do, but the rest, not good enough sheaf‘s only really looked good when he had hamer and o hare in with him, for whatever reason he’s been poor since last season,Eccles and torp will always struggle in the same team, pretty sure out of kitching, Thomas and binks we’ve got 1 decent player if they had a bit of quality next to them, but that’s our problem, we’ve got 11 average players and no quality,

Our success since Robins took over was very much due to the team being greater than it's parts. We had some proper leaders (Doyle, Kelly, McFadzean, Godden); a togetherness; and unity with the fans. Adding two top class players (Gyokeres and Hamer) was enough to move us into the playoffs).
For whatever reason, with the exception of the Cup, from the Wolves game onwards everything changed. Fadz had left by then; Goddens relationship with the fans further deteriorated and Kelly's match day involvement was sparse.
We are now missing players who can turn a game (was almost Dovin yesterday) and have what looks like a split dressing room.

exactly this - the ‘spine’ is good, Dovin, Kitch (if he applies himself like he did yesterday), Sheaf, Wright and actually even Simms have shown enough that most people can see they have qualities of top level footballers.

MVE, Saka, EMC and Torp are also very good footballers on their day - they all have quality, and Bidwell even as an experienced reliable option.

the problem lies in the fact we are asking them to carry the likes of Eccles, JDS, even BTA, Bassette and Thomas (all three of which I think are decent squad options but not nailed on starters), and as a result we don’t have the depth to threaten the top 6.

As has also been said time and again, we lack experienced level headed players, and a couple will make all the difference.

Players raise their games when they play with other good players, exceptional players can change a game and we don’t have any of those at the minute really - “game changers” if you like. EMC and Wright have shown it in games but obviously both injured, and Tats maybe every once in a while, but we need more quality all across the park.

two or three top quality players, a couple of experienced heads in the right places, and maybe we become a top 6 team, but we have to be ruthless and get rid of some of the players who are simply ‘ok’ - we did it when we released the likes of Shipley, Westbrooke etc who were what we needed at the time but probably not good enough for the next step up.

Spot on, bit of experience and we see that game out yesterday, there’s a good group of players to work with there, few additions and we’ll do ok. if everyones honest, we knew we’d struggle a bit this season, spent some money but that midfield was always going to struggle and we’ve done nothing since last season to strengthen it, if anything it’s got worse, expecting a busy summer

Application 100%

These are talented players as shown last season / at previous clubs

Il say until im blue in the face, there are a lot of players in this squad not playing at 100% of what they're capable of
Just can’t agree. Think skill wise, a lot of our players are very limited, who in this team can actually make things happen? Wright, perhaps, Tats, perhaps, EMC, perhaps. After these (and I’m not totally convinced) I can’t see anyone. We’re a long way off a play-off team, and I think it will take 2/3 good transfer windows to make us truly competitive. Hope I’m wrong, and I’m definitely arsed about our football club!

I used the word application earlier in the season to describe our issues and was met with some resistance at the time. It seems like as longer has gone on, it has become a bit more obvious.

You can pick things up from the players. Lazy mistakes, body language, shrugging shoulders, pointing fingers, not challenging decisions, not tracking back. They've just come across as a pretty weak minded and soft bunch in general, with a lack of leaders throughout. The sporadic results and sometimes random dreadful perfomances complimenting that.

If it hadn't been for this, I don't believe we would have lost our manager. That has made me dislike them more, and I don't have time for many of this squad to be totally honest. Unless Lampard can impale the riot act on them, I think it is best that we turn some of them over sooner rather than later.

Of course it's ability, but you also find that those who are good work hard too in order to get there.

If you want it simple, we lost 3 key players over the past 2 years who we were lucky to have. Sure our management team made a difference, yes Collins has been throwing them in our net for fun, yes some players in the squad are not performing at the levels they can or should, but add Gyokeres, Hamer and o'hare to this team, does anyone out there think it would be the same? Ability.

I think we played better without them than we are now. We had a solid base of committed and organised players as well even if they weren’t the most talented.

Agree, but I think our expectation levels have still been raised above what this squad is capable of.

You had leaders in that team. Hamer and Vik were the stars but of equal importance, was Kelly and McFadz.

You can see just how influential McFadz and Kelly (in particular) are on the team and organising everyone in game. This squad just lacks that calming influence under pressure and when Sheaf left the field, things started to deteriorate in my view.

Even last season, despite Kelly’s obvious limitations, you could see it was like having a coach on the field whenever he played.

Massively. I think a known system helps too. We’ve said it all season the mentality is all wrong. It’s what worries me about Holding is we need someone to set standards if the coaching team aren’t going to do it and a player who has fallen out with his new club probably isn’t the guy to do that.

Not sure you find them in January TBH. Unless you’re Blackburn last season ofc.

We could be sitting here close to the playoffs if we took out chances and had a bit of luck

We are really not a million miles away

Comfortable mid table and potential to do better

And that's before lampard brings in anyone new

Stay positive
You don’t be 3rd in xG GD overall if you’re a shit team. The key data metrics suggest we’re a decent outfit that is underperforming.

Fight, determination and motivation. Anyone see anyone have a go at anyone yesterday? Anyone see anyone try and motivate others? Heads down the whole fucking game just accepting what was going on around them.
“Accepting what was going on around them”… we were winning for the majority of the match?

Some criticism on here is totally baffling

You can tell the ranker of losing in stoppage time has clouded people’s judgement. It was a good away performance and had we held on for a draw, the narrative would’ve been that Lampard’s tactics were spot on and we were unlucky to concede such a good strike for the equaliser.

Yes the main complaint is the awful game management. We had subs left. We were still attacking and leaving ourselves open after the equaliser.

I’m not too bothered by the result, we always lose to Norwich, but it’s yet more evidence we’ve got a team and a manager who can’t do the basics.

Who did you want brought on to see the game out? Dasilva? Binks? Fabio Tavares? 🤣
