I thought strikers were supposed to score goals. Maybe he will end up as an attacking mid.

We'll beg to differ then.

Personally I thought we'd left these attitudes behind in the 70s.

Couldn't possibly say what I wanted to without it coming across to some on here as 'racist', which im not, so I won't.

For the record, I'm not calling you a racist, that's not my intention. Your post just came across as a racial stereotype which I don't think has a place in modern society. I'm sure it wasn't intended to cause offence.

Sorry for taking the thread off topic.

Sutty, you'd better hope that WWBB can just 'sweep' this comment under the carpet and that he don't try and 'sue' you

Barton started in the youth ranks at Blackburn Rovers before being released at the age of sixteen due to a serious back injury. Although originally seen as a gamble due to his injury, Preston North End gave Barton a youth scholarship and his performances at youth and reserve team level earned him a two-and-a-half-year contract in December 2008.
Barton made his full debut in a home 3–2 win over Scunthorpe United on 10 April 2010, being replaced at half-time due to a head injury. He scored his first goal in the 4–3 defeat to Burnley the following season. On 25 February 2012, Barton suffered a suspected triple leg break and a dislocated ankle in a 0-0 draw against Walsall FC. (liverpool wanted him for £5 million before this). Barton was named in a Northern Ireland squad in September 2010, having previous been named to the under 21s team, qualifying for the country through his parents. He withdrew from the squad the day after its announcement, however, rather than lose eligibility for the England team by playing in a competitive international. On 12 November 2010 Barton was called up for Northern Ireland's friendly against Morocco after a number of withdrawals, playing the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw on 17 November. On 15 March 2011 more question marks over Barton's international status were raised when he was called up to Noel King's Republic of Ireland U21 squad for a friendly match against Portugal under-21s, making his debut appearance and playing the full 90 minutes for them in that game on 26 March 2011. And thats all there is to know about Adam Barton.

Wow that's a big history but I want to know why we can spend money on him and not a striker we need

I think he's meant to be the man to play the Norwood role.

As for this glut of natural CM's: we have Thomas. That is all. Kilbane may play there but I'd rather he didn't as it's not really his position. Having the choice between Thomas, Jennings and Barton-or all three-would be much healthier.

I see where you are coming from in a way, we do need a striker, but Carazine looks to be that man... If he is good is another question and to be honest, I doubt we could get a good striker for a nominal fee, what we are paying for Barton who is a playmaker who imo, could be excellent and feed Cody n co.

Barton could potentially be signing of the season for us!

"He's a potential £5m player" (in Liverpool money, at any rate. See Carroll, Andy.)

Yeah, but the majority of fans are like that. Look back on threads when any of our players leave. I'd be more worried if they didn't say anything at all.

And actually, half of them say he's a good player with potential and/or is not suited to their style/manager. Could be a steal.

Why do you say 'PNE fans' all of them have said the same thing on there?! Most say he has the ability but not the attitude. Looking at another thread it states he had a falling out with the manager and was doomed to go from then on.

Stop trying to put a downer on proceedings.

yer, thats right, a downer on proceedings.....

We have signed a player that league one rivals of ours do not want and are happy to let him go to us,

just being realistic

No, you are not. You haven't even had an objective look at the few comments on the forum of a team who saw a bright talent get injured and never fulfil their potential for them. You are being negative and only guessing that you are being realistic.

You only have to look back at Cov forums when Westwood left and you'd see 'good keepers are ten a penny', 'easily replacebale' type comments.

Remember when losing Gunnar was fine because we had Deegan?

Fans will always criticise a departing player.

I would say that's unfair, We all new Westy was too good for us, but we would have been fine with an average keeper at that level, we were heavily linked with Murphy at the time, so although it was a hard pill to swallow, I think we weren't all that concerned about him leaving.

Thankyou.

whilst we might not all have been crying and thinking it was the end of the world, many knew he would be hard to replace..

here are the PNE fans commenting on Barton...

"Good riddance, terrible football player. "

"Would never have called him a terrible footballer but he never fullfilled potential here nor did he have the right attitude and lacked mental toughness. not confident in his own ability at all."

a few are saying he could be ok, but his head wasnt in it. Dont get why this is me putting a downer on it

You could go the other way and be very positive on the basis Liverpool and Chelsea were very keen a couple of years ago.

Or we could just wait and judge him for ourselves...

I think we should stick to the ''they were crap anyway'' when they leave and ''they are crap anyway'' when they join stance. We all know where we are then.

About 5 pages of this thread is pointlessly argued by CusWyken that we don't need any midfielders because we have enough already... Well at this moment in time we have ZERO recognised central midfielders if the reports about Connor Thomas being out with long term injury is true and obviously with Deegan being sold.

Even if we had them both I would have liked us to sign 1 or maybe 2 more Cms to give us assurity in the middle of the park. But as it stands we are desperate for central midfielders and I hope Barton as well as Jennings (hopefully still on trial with us) are signed up quickly before they are snatched up by other teams.
