Anderson and Broad moaning about the foot holes I bet they wouldn’t be if they were taking wickets.

After this series Anderson needs to do the right thing and move aside as it doesn’t look like the management will do it for him.

Hard to blame Anderson in some ways.
Stokes and McCullum have asked groundsmen to produce dry, flat wickets. Anderson isn't suited to those (some of his overseas records show it too). He admitted as much after Edgbaston.
Not a lot of thought seems to have gone into how to take 20 wickets with these pitches - focus all about how the batsmen can score quickly. Picking 4 similar paced bowlers (only early 80s) doesn't seem a recipe for bowling success.

Agree about Edgbaston even though a result was produced, however, this pitch has given bowlers enough…especially in the periods we’ve bowled. We bowled poorly at start of first innings and have been a bit unlucky in the second*. Anderson, who’s a legend, just hasn’t been his usual self, maybe partly due to him being injured in the run up to first test…can’t be as easy to recover at 40+ as I can testify !

*doesn’t help when we drop 8+ chances across first couple of tests either

ps everyone is jumping on Stokes/McCullum/Bazball, easy targets, but all I see is poor shot selection, dropped catches and not taking advantage of conditions which all rests with individual players

It isn’t Bazball it’s the lack of intelligence to know when and when not to apply it
Exactly this, you can play an attacking style of play without throwing your wicket away. There's still points in a test match where you need to pull back a bit and consolidate

You could argue England were unlucky at Edgbaston and that if taken a few of the missed chances a win was on the cards. Not sure you can say the same here, they've thrown this one away

And of course when things start going wrong, and 2-0 in the ashes is definitely that point, questions will start being asked. You can start right at the top and question if Stokes would be playing if he wasn't captain and there was a different coach. Is his fitness at the level required for a test series where every game is back to back. Didn't bat or bowl against Ireland, only managed 17 overs across 3 tests so far. Picked a spinner who hasn't played a game that involved bowling more than 4 overs in years and pick Broad & Anderson but ask pitches that are completely unsuitable for them

Need some quick wickets this morning otherwise the series is all but gone

Yep. Eg Fielders go back to the boundaries take 2s can still keep rr well over 4 per over. Applying pressure isn't just through boundaries. If that option is closed off run better the wickets and force opposition to bring Fielders in.
Duck under 90 mph bouncers. It's max 2 per over.
Maximize poor balls, aggressive with mediocre balls, play good balls properly.

If they didn’t pick Anderson they would moan and he would moan, as KP said yesterday England have picked three slow bowlers, Anderson is a master with the ball but allows a lot of time to play it now.

They need raw pace but n the side and you could leave out any of Broad, Anderson or Robinson to get them in.

Anderson, a legend truly, but now arguably a waste of a place. You can swing the ball around corners but if you are doing it at garden cricket pace it’s not hard to play

where's the raw pace outside of Archer, Stone & Wood - none of whom can stay fit? Tongue has previously been clocked at 90 but down from that 1st 2 Tests. Maybe Carse at Durham, Jamie Overton. A load in the mid-80s but raw pace out there - unless I'm missing somone.

Such a shame with Archer especially. Not sure if it made a difference (can’t have helped) but he was bowled into the ground a couple of times by Root/Silverwood. Could really have done with one of them being fit, especially with this short pitch tactic

Tongue looked good/lively

Fielding from England has been a shambles, to me it shows preparation has been poor

Agreed. Cost us at edgbaston and hasn’t helped here. Although Anderson dropping head did get smith on strike to be out next ball…funny old game 🤷‍♂️ Bairstow is giving me the shits still ! If they get Head out cheaply then could give us a tiny sniff…still massively behind in the game though

Edit - Rootys obviously been practicing. That was a belter !

Australia playing the short ball like the English batsmen albeit with the lower pace. Looked comfortable against it earlier. Lack of concentration??

They keep mentioning maybe pitch is a bit two paced so players mistiming shots

Went out for about 45 minutes and 4 wickets fall.

Re Lyon, I’d imagine his series is done after this little cameo. Starc may as well swing the bat.

the guy can barely move, get it on target. few Yorkers in the mix and he's done

That last wicket partnership I’d have bowled full and straight every ball. Can’t make a run and it’s undoubtedly harder to score a boundary than the short stuff. It was almost risk-free. Instead we’ve conceded 10 runs because we can’t dynamically alter the game plan.

Would have taken chasing 371 at 180-2

Madness that they've got Lyon padded up when he can barely walk. Are they not risking doing a lot more damage to him?

I thought it was poor form from Australia. Whether it worsens the specific injury or not (I can’t imagine it will do it any good) he can’t move which makes it very dangerous when he’s likely to face short balls. Fair enough if they were only 200 ahead, maybe everyone considers it’s worth the risk, but 350 ?!! Bit desperate from the Aussies and totally unnecessary.
