Ball carrying centre halves (1 Viewer)

If we’re gonna play 5 at the back you have to have a CB who can step into midfield otherwise you’ll be outnumbered.
I understand that, but we still need a CH that doesn't gift the opposition easy goals.
Binks was caught out of position for QPR's equaliser on Tuesday and gifted Luton their second yesterday. At the moment he's a walking liability defensively. Unfortunately Kitching's form isn't much better, but we need to bring in an experienced CH in Jan.

I have not been a great Lati fan but thought he put in a good shift yesterday. Won a number of telling tackles, was quick to cover. He obviously does not dominate in the air, but contests hard so little is lost. He is also a leader on the pitch.

But is he good enough to be one of 2 at the back given his lack of height? He suits a back 3 which some on here are dead against
The Peake era says he possibly could)

How is binks at fault for the second? The entire team fucked it especially with zero pressure on the ball.

Have you not seen it?
Watch the scorers movement, who is the guy marking him?
What does Binks do when the striker makes his run?

You could argue that others could of done better up to the final ball, but if your a CH you absolutely cannot allow a striker to move into space inside the box, receive a simple pass, turn with the ball, and finish without so much as a simple challenge!

That's basics, under 10's football level.

What's Thomas doing? Why are sheaf and Eccles so far away, with no pressure on a midfielder in the centre of the park 25 yards from goal?

You are very quick to blame one player. But i think the bigger issue is a player being able to pick that pass so easily.

As I said, there's other opportunities to do better in the build up, but ultimately if your CH can be mugged off so easily, your never going to keep a clean sheet.

If a simple ball into space inside your own box, leads to a striker having time and space to make a run, control a ball, turn, pick his spot and score an unchallenged goal, you've got problems.

You can poo poo my reply all you like. It just shows your ignorance to defending.

Here, just read this comment on Binks here

Basically saying he did OK, but he had one job to do and fucked it up.

It’s such a simplistic view to solely blame Binks. We gave their player all the time in the world on the edge of the box to pick the pass, that is the main issue. As a defender you can only react to the striker’s movement so you’ll always be on the back foot.

I'm not saying others weren't culpable too.
But this is thread about ballplaying centre halves hence BInks is the subject.

Binks is not a good defender. Therefore I don’t really care if he carries the ball well. You have to do a lot of that to compensate for silly goals you are conceding. Their second goal yesterday was Binks in a nutshell for me.

Our centre backs are absolutely dog shit, I have been saying this since last season. Joel, Thomas, Kitch are at best qpr or Oxford level.

Binks is the best of a bad bunch, I would stick with Binks, bringing in a centre-back back that is top at this level is a must.

Get Kitch off the books, loan him out to a Charlton or a Barnsley, a team his level.

We will never ever get promoted with Kitching, Bobby, Joel and Binks as the 4 centre backs at our club.

Watching Bobby fail to pass a ball 8 yards is also painful, you want to get promoted, you look at how the promoted clubs operate. There is a reason why Burnley wanted nothing to do with the lad.

lol way too harsh.

Binks is statistically one of the best on the ball in the division.

Thomas is fine.

Lati is good defensively but very limited on the ball.

Kitching has struggled yeah.

Get one upgrade in and we’re sorted. As it is I think our selection is actually good enough, just needs more protection.

We do need an older head at the back for sure . You can see why we were linked with Worrall . Finding one for the right money and wages is going to be difficult though

I really really want Kitching to come good.

I know I'm in the minority, but I think there's a decent player there.
I think he has all the ability and attributes to play at a higher level but mentally he seems weak . Whether that is down to maturity or intelligence who knows but he won't progress until he addresses it

Lati’s leadership and reading of the game I think is underrated.I can forgive him not being the next Rio Ferdinand, as mentioned by others he is committed to defending and always gives 100%, and does his job as a defender. But I was really impressed with an example from Saturdays game of his reading of situations and leadership. not long after kitching had been booked, we had a corner and the 4 cbs lined up in a train kitching binks lati and Thomas, as we went to take corner the ref pulled it back due to a bit of jostling between the teams . Kitching being at the front, before it was taken, lati read the situation and put himself in the front position, clearly so if the ref penalises or gives a yellow it’s him and not a second for kitching. I thought that showed excellent situational management and also a team first attitude.

Comes with being young developing players in regards to consistency. Just bar the course on that note.

Lati’s biggest plus is his reading off the game, helps the entire back line play better when he can organise them. Not as great on the ball but a true out and out defender.

Kitching was very good for our good form last year, could do a great job in the centre of our three.

Binks really won me over today, great use of the ball and amazing driver. Everything you want in a back three. Needs to continue on this path but really positive. Seems a steal for the price.

Thomas is a great sweeper and while can make mistakes, is someone who brings a much needed aggression into the squad.

I would target this area to bring in an experienced CB, to help develop the other four and bring experience to our back line. If we didn’t want to spend big funds on this, would look at plays like Santos at Bolton for this effect. Good ball user, international, 29 years old and A club captain (out of contract this year so wouldn’t cost a lot).

Do we really need another division 1 player?

Nothing wrong with league one players. Several of them have made it in the premiership and top end of the championship.

Not sure where our dislike of them has come from considering Ben Sheaf had only played in league one, Callum O’Hare had only played in League one when we signed him.

Plus I believe players who play in England will have an easier time adapting then players abroad which in January is key since they don’t get pre season. Just my opinion tho.

It's not a dislike. We have Collins, Kitching, Thomas and Mason-Clark who are still learning there craft in this division. So I would say a more experience Championship/Premier signing would be more appropriate.

Does Kitching actually do it well? I genuinely can’t remember.

It can obviously leave us vulnerable on the break if the player is dispossessed, but I’m all for it.

I bet MR is kicking himself over buying Kitching, when for a bit more, he may have been able to prise Doyle from Man City.
Kitching has good distribution. He's very similar to Harry McGuire. Technically quite good, and a sound passer but not very fast. People forget he was one of the main reasons for our brilliant run from Nov-Feb last season. He lost form (as did others) at the end of the season. This season he's been in and out of the team, and hasn't gone back to those levels yet.

He’s been in and out of the team since he joined. We’ve very rarely had a consistent CB pairing in the last season and a bit.

Lati was outstanding at disturbing Morris before he had to chance to challenge for headers on Saturday. Lost count of how many times he nudged him out of position straight after the keeper or defender went long with it for them. Morris had a very quiet game and it was Lati that made sure of it. He's not the best and has obvious limitations but he was excellent up against a strong forward line on Saturday.

None of them are great at CB and we need an extra in the door with experience and a level above what we currently have. In addition, a quality LWB/LB and a midfielder. Kitching might turn out to be ok and was good during the run last season, but his decision making is appalling, the challenge he made to get booked started the passage of play for their goal and it was a challenge he couldn't possibly win and exposed him for the rest of his afternoon being on an early yellow. Albeit that lead to Rudoni coming on and performing well but he makes increasingly rash, poor decisions and can't be trusted as first choice anything until that stops.

Just seen Ben Cabango & Harry Darling’s Contracts are up at the end of the year.

Wonder if we would look at them, Harry is a great ball playing CB which could be a great option on the right and Ben is a great physical presence which would be amazing in the middle of a back three.

Would have to imagine though one of our four would have to make way for them.

WE should always been looking to progress but we shouldn't rule out these CBs we have. They are all relatively young but I do think it would be beneficial to have an older, bigger, meaner bastard in the camp with them

There is clearly something missing with our defenders at the back and in midfield. May be confidence or the shortage in midfield, as the problems remain when we change the personnel or the system. We have to put JDS at the edge of the area for corners because of his height. Don't remember Thomas passing the ball so badly last season. They have moved him so he is not the main first choice long passer out of defence anymore. Kitch looks off form or perhaps he needs more midfield cover. Lati is solid and experienced for his age but is not the most progressive of passers. We are usually better at the back when he plays. Binks is a class footballer better going forward than being put under pressure. Sheaf and Eccles are good defensively but often left exposed on the counter. Bidwell is solid but rarely gets supported by our left side midfield. Same with JDS. MVE has started really poorly this season compared with last year. Until the last couple of games, our right flank has really been exposed.
Need someone awesome at the back or a midfield general that can let our better players do the business. Trouble is, every team wants the same sort of player. Probably should have pushed the boat out for Browne.
