Ben Wilson' race for the golden glove?! (1 Viewer)

Big Oggy was hopeless at times with his distributing and kicking but if we could recreate a 28 year old Oggy would you like him between the sticks.

There was nowhere near the demand for keepers to be good with their feet when Oggy was playing.

And I've no problem with Wilson but I was replying to Robs post which said he wouldn't be surprised if clubs were watching him, I'm merely pointing out that in this day and age his kicking will go against him.

I was thinking about this yesterday and even though its kind of meaningless, as a team 5 in a row at this level is outstanding
And when you think about the joke Luton goal in the first thirty seconds put it with the Sunderland goal it could and should have been six in a row.

I also think the distribution point is very different now to perhaps Marosi at L1 level and missing players that move and create space like O’Hare makes more difficult.
Robins seems to want it slightly longer now as Gyok rolls his man rather than to his feet like others before.

But he’s a goalkeeper not a Glen Hoddle, so long as he can at least wellie it up field if needs be and do a short pass to a full back or CB I’m okay with that.

But your opinion on it isn't relevant and neither is mine, clubs are looking more and more at how good a keeper is with the ball at their feet..

And as I intimated in my original post, in my opinion, they're doing so at the detriment of traditional goalkeeping attributes such as catching crosses and saving shots but that's where we are.

Add to this his comedy moments in the behind the scenes footage and he’s becoming a favourite! I love his interactions with the camera….. like a Jim Carrey in big gloves.

He actually looks like he should be one of those American Pie type films.

I thought we were playing hoofball on Sat... why not, Gyk is so strong, why wouldn't we do it. We are still playing sexy 1 touch ball but now we have this hoof to implement. It can only work in our favour, teams won't know how to handle it.

I remember one time Oggy tried to kick it out as one of our players was injured and it arced beautifully to land in the centre circle.

His antics in front of the cameras belie someone who is evidently willing to listen and learn, he wouldn't have improved otherwise. Funny fella though.

I have noticed Wilson doesn’t dwell as much with the ball and will launch long more often and quicker than he used to and also we all know he’s not the best with crosses but now he will come and punch a cross away more than he used to.
He has definitely worked on his short comings fair play to him.

We are a little more direct from the keeper this season.

Whether that's a change of tactic for the overall way we play, or a change of tactic to reflect Wilson's kicking abilities. A bit of both I would say.

For in play passes:

Last season Moore hit 34% of his passes long
This season Wilson has hit 50% of his passes long

It's not a huge difference really though, only equates to about 5 passes per game hit long rather than played short.

It's a bigger difference from goal kicks though.

Moore hit 32% long whereas Wilson has hit 67% long.

Also teams seem to play the high press more against us now knowing we like to play it out from the back. Having the ability to play it both ways works well.
Not many teams can do that. It's either one or the other and in this league it's long balls. I can see us using that tactic more and more this season, especially if he keeps Vik up top on his own.

He’s got next to go chance of winning it - the clean sheets were down to the change in tactics and the defensive displays - we’ve got something like 3 cleans sheets out of the last 10 games.
Take a Bow Ben Wilson, that Blackburn goal confirms him the golden glove 👏👏👏👏

Wilson hasn't done a lot wrong recently, in fact he's done a lot right, but Mcnally - Fadz - Doyle is lightyears ahead of Rose - Doyle - Panzo, I think we'll be defensively solid for the rest of the season now

And the season isn't over yet.

What a difference to the start of the season. The bed wetters knew we were going down. Yet only a disaster will keep us out of the playoffs where we have a solid defence, more than decent midfield and a strike force that teams in our division could only dream about.

And hats off to Robins and his support crew for helping to make it happen. One of the rare times we can be proud to be a sky blue.

He started the season as a cheap no2, but ended up undisputed no1, with the golden gloves award, record club clean sheet holder, and even got a vital goal that could of got us into the playoffs.

That's one he'll of a season!

If he continues to improve at that rate, it's freighting to think what he can achieve.
