Ben Wilson - well done! (1 Viewer)

I think Ben Wilson deserves a lot of credit for going away, as a bit of an unconfident mess tbh, and coming back almost reinvented.
He has shown over a number of games now, a new composed and confident approach. Much calmer and more thoughtful while still making some fine saves.
Sure lots to work on in terms of coming out decisively and commanding the box but he now seems on a good path to challenging Dovin.
Credit due.

Fair play to Ben, seems like a top guy and although I don't think he is good enough at this level to be our number 1, he did really well last night. He is a very good second keeper for us and where we are right now.

Made some good saves last night and performed v well. It is, and always has been, his distribution that lets him down.

Our GK situation over the last few years has just been plain weird, in terms of preferred starter: -

21/22 - Moore / Wilson
22/23 - Wilson / Moore
23/24 - Collins / Wilson
24/25 - Dovin / Wilson / Collins

Decent back up to Dovin but will only figure in the league if Dovin gets injured or he has a big dip in form
From outside looking in he seems happy with that and a good guy to have around the squad. Don't think we're going to be in the position to have 2 genuine contenders for the no 1 spot unless we get to the Prem so on that basis I'd have no problem if Robins gives him a new contract to stay here as back up.

Unless they can offload Collins, I assume they'll just let Wilson leave at the end of the season. They clearly don't want 3 first team keepers at the moment, as Collins isn't even making the match day squad.

Yes, he did for a second. Had he not the chance was a bit harder for Johnson.

Yeah, watching the highlights back and Wilson was stuck in no mans land for the second goal. Wasn't as clear an opportunity as I thought.
That aside, I think he was pretty good last night. I didn't have the usual panic when the ball went into our box

If that has been Wright he'd have probably had missed it. Thought their player took it well.

He makes some fantastic saves which are great for the highlight real but he has some big weaknesses too.

As mentioned he struggles with a 1 on 1, that's protected more behind a back 3 but with a back 4 he'd have to face it a lot more so I'm glad he's no longer first choice.

Decent back up though and a good character. Credit to him for turning his L2 backup career around, most of his clubs have been L2 but most of his starts Championship.

Yeah he’s a reasonable no 2 and can do the job when needed and showed that last night. I think he won’t get a better gig than this so will accept being sat on the bench as an understudy to Dovin.

Yep-which he should take if offered and is happy to sit on the bench which I think he will be.

I'd love to see Wilson offered another contract. I never understood the switch to Collins last season and even less so that we stuck with him so long after some right howlers. He is a decent number two and seems a positive and liked guy within the club that won't rock the boat.

I was sat watching today's game against Swansea and did wonder if we had Wilson on the pitch would our options going forwards have been stronger/more varied. Wilson (as he did against Tottenham) at least varies playing from the back with trying to kick the ball long down the pitch. Dovin today seemed to just pass sideways to Binks most the game.

Wilson is terrible. He did well the PO season because our entire system was designed to stop shots on goal and hope Vik or Gus would produce some magic. We played 7 defensive outfield players most games.

I much preferred that system to the current one that is designed to allow shots on goal and allow players all the time in the world.

He also had a bad habit on Wednesday of kicking the ball straight to the Spurs goalkeeper! Our problematic form is due to failings in other areas if the pitch.

Kind of relies on having the best midfielder in the league and one of the top five strikers on the planet tho.

it also relies on a player like Mcfazdean marshalling the back line

Just using this thread to make a general point about goalkeepers under Robins. Boddy described MR as 'a good judge of a player' - but does this apply to goalkeepers where it has been a bit of a car crash

He inherited Burge and since then has acquired
O'Brien (remember him?)
Marosi
Wilson (originally specifically as a number 2)
Moore
Collins
Dovin

So we have gone through 7 keepers in 7 and a bit seasons. That is a high turnover in what is normally one of the most stable positions. The rise thro the divisions offers only a partial explanation.

There have been only two seasons where there was complete confidence in the keeper
Marosi in League 1 although he was not up to the next tier
Wilson in the Play Off season - but he was behind probably the best back 3 we have had this century - McNally, McFadz and Doyle.

Moore and Collins started well enough but their performance fell away. And so it may be with Dovin altho it is early days.

I have no conclusion, it is just that we appear to be repeat offenders when it comes to keepers
