Times reporting that supermarket staff could legally be required to enforce Covid rules in store. Bloody madness. These guys have been at work all the way through (unless shielding), get paid shite wages, and are now expected to incite the nutters by asking them to wear a mask.

Any keyworker who has had to go in throughout the pandemic should get some reward, a tax-break of a few grand or something. Might not help the lowest paid though to be fair.

Think this will be aimed at supermarket owners/managers to get them to try to enforce distancing. Going back a few months they were limiting numbers, plenty of sanitiser to wipe your trolley down on the way in, more staff on tills to process customers shopping quickly (and stop unnecessary queuing) and in turn a better respecting of distancing.

In recent weeks you can rock up, no queue, no limiting of numbers, empty sanitiser bottles, less staff on tills so more congregating. Supermarkets basically trying to short cut the rules. It’s right that they should be reminded of their responsibility (it’s up to senior management to implement the systems/processes so shop floor don’t even need to get involved ! Most have security guards so they can enforce rules if required)

ps I’d have supermarket workers up the vaccine priority list by the way, along with teachers (ie below health workers/very high risk but before general population under 55)

I think the short answer is that the police don’t have the resources to police a mass turnout like this but they do to police Sharon and Tracey breaking lockdown rules on their own in a park.

It was a very sensible interview which as well as some doom and gloom contained some positives.
I'd rather hear the truth than the disingenuous bluster and bollocks we hear from politicians which they then have to renege on a week later and put people on an even bigger downer.
We were hitting over a thousand deaths a day last week mate, if you or your loved ones weren't part of that statistic then be grateful.

He's trying to get across the seriousness of the situation. I don't see the issue here? With Boris promising this that and the other it's good that we have someone sensible willing to say it how it is. I doubt he expected to become a household name when taking this job on but he's handled it and himself very well, unlike many ministers.

Spot on Steve, I've said before that the supermarket management seem to have fucked it all off, putting their hard working staff at greater risk

Do you think a thousand deaths is an accurate value? If so, we are making up around 10% of worldwide deaths a day. Either these scientists and politicians have fucked up so badly that this figure is accurate, or they are massively over inflated.

Also in regards to people dying of COVID. I've had 2 close family members die of COVID, so yes I am grateful that this week the rest aren't part of this statistic.

was a good interview with a police office on 5live yesterday on about the difficulties of policing this and what is legally within their remit.

Yes, I do trust the death figures, I'm not saying they're 100% accurate but I don't think they'll be massively out.
But as Witty said in his interview we now have a path to get out of this, we just need to hang in there for a few months. I know it seems an age but it will soon go.

1k is an under play due to the arbitrary "within 28 days of a test" rule, it'll be roughly 15-20% higher

The frustrating thing for me is how lax the rules got in the summer. Do you think we were all naive as a nation to think that we had gotten over the worst of it. I was just speaking to a friend about how much people were able to do then compared to now.

to me the biggest issue was not locking down sooner in autumn and winter. Johnson, not for the first time, hesitated. A few weeks earlier could have saved a lot of lives.
And keeping London in tier 2 was criminal.

Frankly, I believe about 99% of the "legitimate exemptions" for people not wearing a mask are utter bullshit.

Just ban entry to all supermarkets without a mask. No ifs ,no buts, no mask, no entry.

The supermarkets can spend some of their covid bonanza profits to employ some of the thousands of security & door staff that have fuck all else to do as all the bars, pubs & clubs are closed down.

You look online and see in Florida packed theme parks. Americans Jetting off all over the Caribbean.

Yet here we are sat in an endless merry go round of lockdowns.
