Covid: Masks and social distancing 'could last years' - BBC News

How much longer do we need to keep damaging hospitality?

Watch the interview it’s far less chicken little. She was asked (towards the end of the clip) of well have restrictions and she said she thinks the economy and people have adapted to low level measures like masks in some places and types of social distancing. She talks about large events being monitored and maybe changes in how they work. Not about keeping hospitality closed or measures in schools.

A long period of 'new normal' where we're avoiding each other and covering half our faces to go to the shop?

Who'd have thought that year long epidemic that has so far killed 130k people Would have long term ramifications?

Consider a scenario where most adults have had a double jab and can get boosters every winter in response to new variants. How long would you keep restrictions going for then?

How long would I?
What qualifications do I have to answer that?
But if the advise from Mary Ramsay and her colleagues is to keep certain measures in place then I think we should comply.
Hopefully it won't be necessary.

Zero days is the correct answer.

We have to live with this virus..... the clue is in "live"

Currently there are 130k people who won't be living again. Some of them would be alive if scientists hadn't been ignored previously.

If wearing a mask for half an hour here and there is advised it no biggie to me.

The anti social argument is disingenuous anyway. Half the world now walks round with headphones on and their nose in a phone and no one seems to bat an eyelid and its the most anti social thing going.

Yeah....and probably about 120k of those deaths were pre-vaccine roll-out.

I suggest you re-read Brightons scenario .

....Plenty more damage, suffering and future excess death happening in front of our eyes right now.

I read his scenario.
I'm hopeful that in that case we would be back to normal.
But if the scientific advise is We still need to take certain measures then personally I'll do it.

Ignoring scientific advise last March and September didn't turn out well.

All of us here have followed the rules and would keep doing so whatever they were. The big difference with before is that everyone would have strong protection against serious illness. Also said quite a few times I'm happy with overseas travel staying off the cards this year.

And I thought that once everyone is vaccinated we'd be finished with masks and social distancing but listening to the interview with Ramsay above it seems that may not be the case.
If that's so, and it's needed to save lives then I'll do it is all I'm saying, I hope it won't be necessary.

If all adults have been double vaccinated, cases, deaths and hospitalisations are minimal and they tell us we can't hug our friends and family then I wouldn't follow the rules at all.

I've said I don't mind a bit of mask wearing, its actually a pretty decent accessory in the winter when its freezing to keep your face warm.

Apart from that we need to be able to live our lives. My mate living in Sydney is currently on holiday in Bali going out to bars and having a good time with friends. I'm not living an indefinite half life.

I, like Brighton, am also hoping to be married eventually. We've suspended it to 2023 now to try and be as certain as we can that it will go ahead but we want a big day with everybody there not 15 people who can't drink after 10pm, can't touch each other and then go.

If we're keeping restrictions unnecessarily then you're robbing people of huge important moments in their lives.

I'm not some anti lockdown nutter either. This lockdown should have been harder to kill it off but we're vaccinating people against the disease and the NHS should be able to cope with the level of cases that occur in a vaccinated population.

We were perhaps naive in thinking it would be normal this summer, but been together nearly 10 years so both waited long enough. If it really came to the worst we’d marry in a registry office and have a big party later. As it is, hopefully we get both.

Had my first jab earlier, the sports club on Binley Road doing it and all the volunteers and staff doing a really good job. Sign there said they were up to nearly 23000 vaccinated at the centre
Sign said 20k when I was there Wednesday so they’re really getting through them!

"quasi-ineffective" you said.......Non Macron.....try 100%

Heard the report today. Great news. As seems to be the way with this vaccine there were a couple of caveats,it hasn't been tested on all the main variants and the jabs were given 4 weeks apart but the UK scientist they had on for comment didn't seem too concerned.

100 percent effective against serious illness in over 65s, that's our way out of this.

The new poll on EU attitudes towards the AZ vaccine, is it difficult to look accross the water and see the great success its been or...? IMG_20210322_113840.png

Fuck them if they want to carry on this game

Think people need to just forget foreign holidays until next year and be content as possible with Normal life returning on these shores soon.

Jokes on them when we have near normality back in a matter of weeks while they keep cocking up the vaccine rollout
Do you honestly believe we will have near normality back in a matter of weeks.

Really like a few have mentioned once the most vulnerable have been vaccinated, with sensible border control both ways there is no reason why within a couple months the country can't start heading back towards normality

I really hope you’re right, but I just don’t see it at all.

I dont see why not. over half the adult population now vaccinated (over 85% efficacy of even 1 jab studies have shown), cases are under control, schools went back 2 weeks ago and hardly a ripple of increase in cases, and the variant scaremongering always comes to nothing, its inevitably discovered a few weeks down the line that the 'potentially lethal variants' are still covered by the vaccine.

Yes i think people should still take precautions, facemasks on public transport, rigorous handwashing, stay away from people if you feel below par, but other than that why cant we? What actual evidence is there to show we cant?

I’d sooner have had my jab and for all the others to have had two. Not there yet sorry.

Isn't the reason caution is being suggested rather than an overnight return to 'normal' because there is so little evidence either way. We are all basically part of a huge live trial. Hopefully as things are opened up we don't see an increase in hospitalisations but with so many unknowns and so little data available surely better to be cautious rather than just go for it and end up back in lockdown?

Exactly isn't the point of the 5 week gaps between stages to give enough data and time to look at it?

I have the feeling that this summer is going to be an absolute shitshow. Not sure if a big bang reopening is going to be this joyous, happy clappy thing that everyone is envisaging.

They can fecking well use the supplies they’ve already got before giving threats to AZ.

Absolutely.
EU is sitting on a stockpile of anywhere between 15 - 50 million AZ doses depending on various reports yet several major EU nations leaders have actively undermined the vaccine whilst simultaneously threatening legal action against the manufacturer & threatening to ban exports of goods that are legally contracted to come the UK......all while their own populations are now scared stiff of the AZ vaccine due to their very own scaremongering.

Macron in particular is right up there with Bolsonaro when it comes to skuppering his owns nations route out of the pandemic.

If they want it use it if they don’t want it let’s buy it off them so it isn’t wasted. It’s just incredible hubris and stupidity

Am not one for conspiracy theories, but I cannot help but wonder if the way certain European Governments have behaved over the various vaccines (and continue to do so) and the way in which they have tried to hinder the roll out in the UK, is there a concern amongst those same Governments that it will give the UK economy a head start as things start to normalise?
