Given its a fictitious story there are many versions, in fact ties between Coventry and St George can be traced to 16th century to a historians work.St George was born in Turkey of middle eastern parentage, and is thought very unlikely to have ever visited England.
He was a Christian who fought for his religion, against his former Roman Emperor...cant remember which one.
He was made a saint for his courage in defence of his religion.
Pretty sure he's the patron saint of a few other (Christian ?) countries too.
So its not as outlandish as it seems to suggest that it represents St George.
