St George was born in Turkey of middle eastern parentage, and is thought very unlikely to have ever visited England.
He was a Christian who fought for his religion, against his former Roman Emperor...cant remember which one.
He was made a saint for his courage in defence of his religion.
Pretty sure he's the patron saint of a few other (Christian ?) countries too.

Given its a fictitious story there are many versions, in fact ties between Coventry and St George can be traced to 16th century to a historians work.

So its not as outlandish as it seems to suggest that it represents St George.

If you're after some constructive criticism, just a few points I would like to make:

" The bird on the left-hand side is an eagle. It was the symbol of the old Kingdom of Mercia.

I thought that the eagle was the Eagle of Leofric (husband of Lady Godiva)? The Black Eagle of Leofric is a symbol for the ancient Coventry.

Also the elephant has a religious meaning. Animals were often treated as religious symbols and the elephant is seen, not only as a beast so strong that he can carry a tower - Coventry's castle - full of armed men, but also as a symbol of Christ's redemption of the human race.

The animal, according to one story, is supposed to sleep standing, leaning against a tree. Hunters sever the trunk, and he falls helpless to the ground, until a small elephant approaches and pulls him up with his trunk. This was seen in medieval times as the type of fall of Adam and Eve and of Christ's redemption of the human race.

Yes you’re right it is. But my understanding is he had it because it was a symbol of Mercia, of which he was the Earl

Had a pizza couple of matches ago - to finish it was like eating 4 crackers in a minute so don’t expect cordon bleu but it filled me up !

thanks Shep! I’ll have a wonder round for a pizza on Saturday the burritos in the north stand have replaced my love of pies and burgers in recent weeks! Nice to have something different on offer. Let me know if you track down the macaroni!

Pizza place is quick to get served too....they also serve beer, albeit only a choice of one beer...can't remember what it is. Anyway, you can go down after half time and wait less than 5 mins to get served.

History is full of baloney, heroes created through myth, religion etc.no cameras in those days. We are led to believe Africa was pretty well undiscovered for centuries yet lions and elephants appeared on flags and banners a thousand years ago or more, as for St. George been many theories about him including he came from this area, all bollocks but entertaining I suppose.
