Starmer suspends seven rebel MPs including McDonnell over two-child benefit cap vote
Show of strength by new Labour prime minister after work and pensions secretary Liz Kendall said the government had to do ‘the sums’ before it could commit to abolishing the limitwww.independent.co.uk
I refuse to vote until Putin is on the ballot.Labour continuing to justify why I did not vote for them
Same here. Embarrassing from Starmer.Labour continuing to justify why I did not vote for them
VibesWas that in the manifesto?
I don't agree with it whatsoever.
But it's not like it was put in the manifesto then pulled 5 minutes later.
He's clearly not in the same ballpark as that appalling fat wanker Johnson.
Edit: Grendel 'laughed' within about 1 minute so I'm comfortable my answer is on the money.
I don't know what this is supposed to achieve? Even the centrist on my twitter feed are slamming this as well as Labour MPs who have put out statements today saying they were against the cap but haven't voted against it.Disgusting by Labour to suspend those MPs , where does starmer think he's governing in fucking north Korea? Dick head

Well labour own the 2 child cap now , not the tories .. its on them , it's now their policyWell this was totally unpredictable wasn't it
4 years is a long time in politics - to misquote Harold Wilson
4 years is still a long time in politics. Also, very easy to say these things when (a) you are not in government and(b) will therefore not have to find a way to pay for them.
Not sure how that makes it better. Most people know how amendments to the Kings Speech work.Hang on.
People do realise this wasn't actually a vote on removing the two child limit. Right?
This is going to be a long 4 years when people don't even know what they're getting their knickers in a twist about.
Not sure how that makes it better. Most people know how amendments to the Kings Speech work.
Don't think that many people thought if Starmer lost the vote, which is to all intents and purposes impossible with the majority he has, the cap would be removed tomorrow.
But isn't that kind of the point? He's already on the ropes with it to the point they're started saying they won't rule out scrapping it in the future. Why suspend MPs over this? It just puts a bigger spotlight on an issue he's already struggling with. The cap will be removed at some point (hopefully soon), I'm sure of it.
I just don't see why people are getting bent out of shape because something that wasn't in the manifesto wasn't in the Kings Speech.
This amendment and vote means nothing really, it's all show

If those 7 MPs had voted and nothing had been done it wouldn't have made a ripple, now it’s e all over socials with Sir Kid Starver the top trend, how does that benefit him?
(B) is no problem at all, like all government spending it is created out of nothing4 years is still a long time in politics. Also, very easy to say these things when (a) you are not in government and(b) will therefore not have to find a way to pay for them.
Not a good look. I understand he wants to look like he's in charge and will be tough but seems overly draconian and against uniting the party.going well

I can personally attest to this. Became very disillusioned with accounting and economics as the more I learned the less it made sense. I finished the degree even though I really wasn't enjoying the final year and lasted a few years in accounting before I just had to get out. What was most disappointing was that I felt at degree level there would be more chance to discuss and debate, but if anything it felt like dissenting from the agreed orthodoxy was tantamount totreason. I had more constructive arguments with my GCSE and A level teachers on the subject. Everything seems to be based on a foundation of sand and 'vibes' masked with some complicated looking maths.I remember listening to an economics podcast where they were discussing how the drop out rate for economics degrees was high compared to other courses and the general consensus was that the more you study economics the more apparent it becomes that its all smoke and mirrors
And that was from a bunch of economists!
I mean if even you are being critical of his approach then that says everything.Said it before. He needs to learn the difference between governing and campaigning. Can’t do this for four years.
Government Spending is created out of taxation or borrowing. Printing more money leads to inflation.(B) is no problem at all, like all government spending it is created out of nothing
Was it in the manifesto? He had to suspend them for voting against the Kings Speech, but the way the whole thing has been handled has been a shambles. It really should have been accounted for from the start. It wasn’t exactly an unknown policy.
Money is numbers on a screen in this day and age.Government Spending is created out of taxation or borrowing. Printing more money leads to inflation.
Day to day spending largely yes. But borrowing is problematic as you need to then service the interest (in theory, but no country seems to care about getting into more and more debt).Government Spending is created out of taxation or borrowing. Printing more money leads to inflation.
Or not, when the IT crashes.Money is numbers on a screen in this day and age.
So I totally agree. But surely party loyalty is essential at this stage? Id like to see it introduced in the next few months, before the suspended mps come back. Not a good look. Very disappointed by his reaction.
