Suppose this should go here rather than the things that annoy me but it’s not really politics specific.

So called patriots who don’t have the first clue about the history of this country and so end up shitting on our traditions.

For those who aren’t aware the tree is a gift from Norway and decorated in traditional Norwegian style since it started in 1942. It’s a nice nod to WW2 allies and these sad pricks are trying to culture war it up.

Look at the state of the replies.

That’s about 90% of them.

Yeah the study and the data are two different things. I should have been clearer. There’s more trans inmates likely because they can self identify. There’s no suggestion being trans makes you more likely to commit crime. Though the limited data we have suggests there’s no evidence it makes you less likely either. Which you’d expect right? Although I think gay people have very low crime rates so maybe there could be an argument it was possible.

Putting aside the trans thing for a minute it really raises some interesting questions about justice policy. Men commit the vast majority of sexual and violent crimes. If we did find out that chopping your dick off and pumping you full of oestrogen makes you have the criminal profile of a woman (so not likely to be violent offender), should that be a justifiable penalty? Similarly if we found it was all gender socialisation and not testosterone what did it, should we make parents raise boys differently?

I think the trans question distracts from the real problem in women’s lives: men. And frankly once you start asking questions about that it gets quite uncomfortable in terms of the data. Not all men, but pretty much only men.

I have no problem whatsoever with finding a solution so trans gender females can’t use women toilets and I’m certain that some men are using this as an opportunity.

I also felt sorry, not so much now, but initially for j k Rowling who wasn’t saying no to sex changes but that there needs to be a safe space and she was deplatformed

We need an answer that’s creative and non discriminatory and I think if we found that we’d find that if any men are taking advantage they’d stop and try another tactic

Males in female sports seems an easy one too. Levels of male hormones seems reasonable. People will be affected but at least it’s fair and manageable

It may seem reasonable Pete but sporting advantage goes well beyond current testosterone level. Hip angles, arm span, fast twitch muscle fibre. Male puberty bestows many athletic advantages that can’t be undone.

The whole idea of having a gender is sexist. The idea if I like flowers and dresses I’m a girl and sports and cars I’m a boy belongs on the 1950s. What matters is the sexed body in some circumstances. Sports and crime are two areas there are clear category differences in male and female behaviour and outcomes even if we don’t fully know why. By all means look at sports that have no need for sex segregation, but where we keep men and women separate for good reason I see no reason to change that.

I think saying the concept of having a gender is sexist is going quite a bit too far. It is a statement of fact. Should we change science because it’s inconvenient?
Saying that boys have to like sports and cars but cant like flowers and dresses is stereotyping but is it sexist?

Developers and landlords do as little as possible and as cheap as possible. They do a bit of work when buying the property and then very little afterwards. For example a property I know that has been turned into an HMO had a broken waste pipe with poo coming out of it. It took FOUR MONTHS for that to be fixed - how many people would leave that in their own property? It currently has a water waste pipe with a huge chunk missing and water just comes out of it onto the garden. Yet apparently the landlord looked at it and said they couldn't see an issue!

The reason some private houses don't get done up is because the mortgage costs so much it leaves little left for repairs which were already required when they bought the house, especially with living costs and wage stagnation. If you're living there why on earth wouldn't you want it to be in a fit state? Meanwhile a landlord will just whack it on the rent.

To be honest, there are a lot of houses that have not been maintained sufficiently by elderly people in their later years which are causing problems now. And a lot of those that end up on the rental market stay in that condition or worse.

As I’ve said earlier, evasion is illegal and so could be cracked down on. Avoidance is legal and merely ensuring that you are acting within the rules. So the rules need tightening up, entirely within governments gift if they are competent enough to do it.

Think it's a case of what type of property you want and where you want to rent. Where you used to be able to turn up at an estate agents and get shown round multiple properties until you found one you like now its a mad scramble for anything that comes on the market.

Sure if you want to live in a bedsit or HMO as they now seem to be called or a shit flat you've got plenty of options. At the other end if you want a luxury apartment there's loads of those. If you just want a regular half decent flat or house in a decent area it's a nightmare finding somewhere.

In terms of new development I moved back here 9 years ago and at that point the development had been 'in progress' for several years, how long do you think is reasonable for these things to take? Presumably on this basis you won't be expecting the new homes promised by Labour until at least 2035?

You don't need demand for housing to continue to increase for us to be massively short of housing. In fact the demand could significantly decrease and we'd still need a large number of new houses built.

That sounds like my neighbour. I was on the verge of getting a plumber in to investigate where the smell was coming from when my neighbour came round to apologise with the same old story that they were struggling to get the landlord to do anything about it.

I have a suspicion that taking your landlord to court every time you need something doing is easier said than done and not the route to a harmonious home life. The last place I rented the landlord refused to return the deposit despite there being zero damage, not to mention the fact there had been no cooking facilities for the last 6 months I was there as he couldn't be arsed to fix the kitchen.

There's a deposit protection scheme in place to make it 'easy' to deal with these sort of situations. It took months and a shedload of paperwork to get my deposit back and that's a case where I had stacks of photos etc as evidence and the landlord didn't dispute anything. God knows how complicated it would be if it was actually disputed.

Landlords know they have the upper hand and you're not going to do anything to rock the boat unless it's a last resort.

What they don’t do is tell me how I must think and what I am not allowed to say. i think I have posted this loads of times, but about 3 weeks ago the person leading the programme said it was, in reality, a two term plan. So nearly spot on, I won’t be expecting the new homes promised by Labour at all.

I still don’t get how all these tales of woe sit with Rayner’s assertion that there are plenty of houses.

I last rented about 8 years ago, temporary location for work. Had a choice of quite nice but normal flats in good condition. £750 pcm though for 1 bed furnished. The landlords were great, anything I asked for was done. e.g new cooker, new sofa

I guess I’m just a lucky boomer who always has always had everything easy

Think you've got a fundamental problem where demand is far in excess of supply so landlords / agents know they have the upper hand.

There seems very little will from parliament to make genuine improvements for tenants. There's some tinkering around the edges but when anything more major is proposed it doesn't seem to get very far.

Just look how long it is taken to get anything done post-Grenfell and of course there was the bill to make housing fit for human habitation that got voted down.

Currently, there aren’t any specific rules in effect requiring private landlords in England to provide properties that are ‘fit for human habitation’.

What I'm seeing by me is more and more private lets. There's so much demand people know all it takes to rent out your house is a post on the local facebook group. I would bet my mortgage a decent percentage of those rentals don't have the correct paperwork in place so the tenant has zero protection or rights.
