I genuinely don’t get the joke Sunak was trying to make. Either way, he does not come across well at all, grinning his way through lines like that. Whether or not you think it’s acceptable fodder for jokes, it just doesn’t seem like a natural fit for him.

Also - why the fuck do we still have PMQs in 2024? Who is it serving? Hold the PM to account by all means, sit them down in front of a parliamentary committee every week for a couple of hours, whack it on TV or whatever. This weekly spectacle of each side trotting out rehearsed zingers that only resonate with lobby correspondents, parliamentary sketch writers and the other Westminster nerds is just bullshit political theatre that fills a couple of hours of Sky News airtime every Wednesday and achieves fuck all else. The worst kind of Oxbridge debating society rubbish.

Yes, it might be worthwhile if there was some sort of guidelines about the PM actually having to answer the questions.

But it's totally pointless when a question about the state of the NHS can be answered with a 'but Corbyn' or a question on knife crime answered with something about trans people. Waste of time really.

Select Committees are much more useful.

I wouldn't mind but they're rarely zingers either

Whoevers writing for Starmer has an occasional bullseye but Sunaks man has a worse hit ratio than a certain striker

Think he was (poorly) trying to reference Starmers previous U turns inc going from ‘a woman is a female adult’ to his more recent comment that 99.9% of women haven’t got a penis. Hence the 99% of u turn comment. I don’t think it was anti trans so much as inappropriate considering the audience and he should apologise for any offence caused

Agree with the comments about PMQs being just a waste of time with poorly written gags and usually very few, if any, answers to questions on the most pressing issues of the day

It wasn’t anti trans just a not funny joke and let’s be honest it was Starmer who referenced the murder and tried to make political capital out of it.

PMQ achieves nothing - it’s just grandstanding pantomime

Yes Starmer is really the one to point the finger at for Sunak using a trans attack line in front of Brianna Ghey's mother. Christ.

Seems odd to pretend there isn’t a political dimension to the murder when the victim’s mother is sitting in parliament and has asked to meet with the leader of the opposition.

The victims mother blames social media access TBF. I think the joke was poor and the attempt to use a dead kid as a wedge on it even more so TBH.

It seems she wasn’t even in the public gallery at the time

It’s not a trans attack

Sunak is just incapable of not putting his foot in it because he so easily takes the bait. A few political commentators have pointed out if he’s easily duped by Piers Morgan then what chance does he have with someone like Putin.

If you were being cynical you’d say Starmer set him up today. I can’t remember a PMQ’s of late where Sunak hasn’t said Starmer can’t tell us what a woman is. It’s on a list of comebacks he just trots out rather than answer the question. Starmer must have known that there was a good chance he’d use it because let’s be honest Sunak isn’t exactly sharp, he’s a script reader and from his delivery it’s clearly not a script written by him. He’s the Ron Burgundy of PM’s, he will read whatever is on that piece of paper?

Starmer didn’t say anything about the murder today except to pay tribute to Esther Ghey’s bravery - that’s really worse in your eyes?

I’m not talking about Starmer. More the glee many have jumping on this TBH.

Attack. Jibe. Joke. Whatever you want to call it then.

To use it just moments after Starmer praised Brianna's mother and said she was here to today is 1, incredibly fucking stupid and 2, incredibly fucking insensitive.

It’s a comment aimed at Starmers U Turning and a reference to his “99% of women have a penis”

For the record 100% have and it’s a reference to safe space for women which is championed by the likes of the now vilified J K Rowling.

I actually see little political capital in it really but it’s specifically that

It’s not a anti trans remark. Trans women are actually men biologically and it’s something Rosie Duffield has championed and Starmer has done nothing to protect her from abuse and threats within their own party.

It’s not a funny joke and pointless and Starmers interjection was political and not helpful either.

Grendel

Is that really what Starmer said?

Sigh 99.9% if you must

And it is a legitimate debate - trans “women” should not share open facilities with women unless the women consent to it

Grendel

That’s not what he said either! Bit slow on the uptake today, big night last night?

Oh it’s 99.9% haven’t got a penis. I’m sorry - are you happy now?

I’m really not sure what you mean by a big night.

I don't know if that's aimed at me but I can assure that, for me anyway, it's certainly not glee! Contempt and disgust mainly.

No! As always on this thread I’ve just been through Twitter and am talking mostly about what I see there. Dawn Butler and a few others making this about the murder. I honestly think Sunak will be happy that the conversation is out there again and lots of Labour MPs will be falling over themselves to look silly in public.

Pick your battles I say. And the what is a woman battle isn’t one Labour can win. So it feels like faux outrage and using the fact the mum was there to make it toxic.

It’s crazy, voderman calling for him to resign 🤦‍♂️. I’m all for people saying it was insensitive under the circumstances and call for an apology but it’s all a bit OTT

Sunak is just not a ‘politician’

No he’s not. He’s trying to be nasty and it just doesn’t work anyway. His best bet was nerdy wonky stable guy but then he loses to RefUK on the right and the actual record of the Tories.

I believe that if a trans women wishes to be defined as a women then that should be accepted without question, however they need to realise that adjustments need to happen as a result; one of which is that they use private independent facilities to keep all parties safe.

Let’s not do the trans debate again. No one shifts position and it just upsets people close to it. That said parliament is the exact place for that debate, even though PMQs is the worst part of it.

Yeah he's bloody awful. Totally incapable of reading the room, absolutely hates being questioned/pushed back on and gets all tetchy.

He's basically incapable of acting like a normal human being around other people, nevermind being a good politician!

A simple apology takes all of the heat out of this. The fact that Sunak didn't do it straight away speaks volumes.

I've no problem with him going for Starmer on the flip-flopping thing, it's not just the Tories picking him up on that.

But to attempt to open a jokey attack line on the trans issue whilst a parent who has just lost a child to a hideous, trans-phobic murder, is in the building, is hideous. It deserved to be called out.

Any decent human being would surely apologise in this situation. Wanky Tories like Badenough just double down on it, of course.

Brianna's father has now asked for an apology.

Surely he can't refuse now.

Which just makes his earlier refusal look even worse.

He really is so shit at this.
