Do you want to discuss boring politics? (35 Viewers)

It's a sign of how far politics has moved to the right in recent years if they are seen as moderate. I see no difference between Farage, Braverman and co and the hard right in Europe.

As for Sunak, he appointed Braverman as Home Secretary. Also his chief policy is about sending asylum seekers to an African country apparently contrary to international law. Feels pretty far right to me.

Starmer has said his only issue with Rwanda is cost and that he would freely consider sending asylum seekers to a another country for processing. Blair considered building detentions centres on remote Scottish Islands.

No coincidence that most of the EU countries are considering this too. Australia processes asylum seekers in 3rd countries as well and no one would consider that country ‘far right’.

It’s an issue affecting Europe and the wider anglophone world and if unchecked, it will fester into something more ugly and toxic.

It’s a fair question. Probably a bit of both. Politicians can’t solve everything but can at least try to address some concerns/issues that flow from globalisation. On the flip side, we as populations, can’t expect all the benefits and none of the negatives

The problem with immigration as I said before is that no one wants the details. There’s a group who are happy to tank higher education in exchange but not a majority, same with care costs (and often two opposing groups younger don’t want to tank uni older don’t want to tank care), everyone you speak to (and I’ve got a fair few friends for whom this is their number one political priority) wants to stop “the illegals and those claiming benefits and not working” but they aren’t a significant group of you want numbers down overall.

That’s why the Tories have focused on small boats, because they’re the one group everyone can agree should be stopped. But they’re a tiny proportion of the overall numbers and really hard to actually stop completely.

So if you’re a politician working in good faith to address these concerns there’s very few levers you can actually pull because a lot of what you’re fighting against is memes about immigrants being given free houses or whatever.

I do think the one policy lever that hasn’t been pulled is ID cards and a big crackdown on the black economy. But a lot of the same people are staunchly anti authoritarian and don’t want to have a card themselves or have the taxman pay closer attention to the cash in hand economy.

Can we stop the stupid “can you remember this exact figure” questioning? It’s entirely designed to clip for social media and not at all relevant. That includes “Jeremy Hunt doesn’t know how much dog food costs” or whatever.

Big overarching policy questions sure, but this level of stuff is just dumb and adds nothing. The media gets no scrutiny on how fucking awful it as at its job.

You seem to be suggesting i am some sort of Starmer fan.

You still haven't explained the difference between Farage and far right in Europe, or Braverman or Sunak.

No but by your logic he is far right. To suggest that immigration was not an issue before Farage is laughable.
Of course it doesn't. Nowhere has he said that he supports a policy of forcibly sending asylum seekers to Rwanda. Sunak leads a Government that has expended considerable energy and resource into trying to achieve this.

I’ll humour you, first, how would you define ‘far right?’
You're the one who said if we don't do something about immigration we will get far right politicians here like in Europe. So I am asking how these far right ones differ from our own.

He’s going to offer you a textbook next.
He keeps avoiding the question. Also has failed three times to say how we recruit enough doctors, nurses and social care workers without immigration.

After 14 years of reorganisation under the Tories he wants yet more reform, cuts in expenditure and to stop the supply of professionals from abroad. Of course that'll work.

It’s not helpful when you choose to not define what you call far right.

The big difference is that Nigel Farage is an ex-Tory, whereas the National Rally and Brother’s of Italy have their roots in neo-nazi/fascist movements. That’s a starting point. The AfD, started as a breakup from the CDU and supposedly held talks with neo-nazi groups to lead mass deportations.

Reform actively kicks out members with racist and neo-Nazi/fascist pasts. The party still attracts deplorables. The Greens of all parties have had to stand candidates down over anti-Semitic posts/comments. Nigel Farage himself fancies himself as the heir to Thatcher claiming he was the only politician “keeping the flame of Thatcherism alive”.

I wouldn’t describe Farage or Reform as far-right - personally wouldn’t vote for them.

A bunch of their candidates like and follow Britain First too.

If they kicked out all the racists and fascists I don't think there'd be many left.

You suggested immigration wasn’t an issue before. Blair in 2004 looked at sending asylum seekers to Tanzania.

How do Farage and Reform 's policies differ from those groups?

Yea these gotchas are annoying. I don't know how much dog food costs and I own a dog, I also couldn't tell you how much a pint of milk costs either for that matter...

I can tell you two pints is £1.20 in Tesco or Aldi, and £1.45 for four pints.

So there.

I can also think that encourages milk waste, and only Farage will sort that out like the man he is.

Speaking of flat car parks. Look at the multi-storey at UHCW that was rejected because it would ruins the views of residents. Next to a massive fucking hospital.

I mean look at this, must be 60% of the land is flat car parks. Insanity.

I do agree about the ridiculous amount of flat car parks that take up the hospital footprint, but I did hear there re problems with MSCP's there because of the proximity to the river and the weight of the buildings and cars in a small area.

Got recommended this. See the night and day difference between him and his wet lettuce tribute act.

Pure opinion here, I think the electorate will tire of the Labour Party quickly in government. In 1997, the electorate were genuinely enthusiastic about Blair and his vision of ‘third way’ politics. There isn’t that same enthusiasm for Starmer and most of the key policies are tinkering around what is already policy. In short, it seems that nothing of real substance will change in this next parliament and our left leaning friends can agree on that I suspect.

Of all the PMs I’ve studied, Blair and the New Labour political machine was genuinely impressive. Despite all its flaws and in retrospect, policy errors.

There’s a literal hospital with God knows what equipment and people in beds!
