There is some Brexit underperformance that has to be accounted for £40B a year,so a net difference of 20-30B doesn't seem to wild really?
The difference Reeves talks about is significantly Contributed to be decisions made by the Labour government in but a few weeks. Can you imagine the hole after 5 years?

At least I have my reduced energy bills to look forward too. Hang on a minute , it’s all gone quite on that fron.

Looking forward to our increased mortgage payments kicking in next month.

Presumably you haven’t fixed again given the (apparent) direction of travel.

People have benefitted over a number of years from abnormally low mortgage rates. Who was in government during that period?

We fixed again as we're planning on starting a family next year and the certainty helps with planning budgets. Good to see Liz Truss absolved of any blame for causing a huge spike in rates not that long ago anyway.

Every job is a piece of piss, except mine, seems to be the theme here. If it's so straightforward, why does it take 18-24 months' worth of training to become a train driver. Why aren't we all applying to do it?

I'm guessing one reason is that it's actually fairly technical, and the other is that it's not 40 tons of baked beans that you're responsible for, it's a few hundred lives, and a few million quid if you stuff it up.

Fully automated trains might be some way away - there's a lot of infrastructure involved. And the reason you have a driver in trains, is a bit like the reason you've got a pilot in planes...

just pointing out that the interest rate dropped last month, and is forecast to drop again in the next couple of months (presuming things don't go pear shaped)

And yes we had a sustained low rate for a decade under the tories which was great, and traditionally Labour always fuck the economy up with their mental spending and borrowing.

What worries me is that Starmer is already showing signs of the old Labour insanity, he's given up on trying to do anything about immigration, which is ultimately going to cost billions, and probably collapse our infrastructure, while at the same time taking the winter fuel allowance from pensioners and stopping child allowance for young families with more than 2 kids!

Man of the people my fucking arse!!!

Rates dropped in 2008 because of the GFC not because of the Tories.
Yes, but we’re kept low during the majority of 14 years of Tory misrule.

People had got used to such abnormally low interest rates and then complain about house price inflation.

But the Tories oversaw something unprecedented like 15 consecutive rate rises, leading to the highest interest rate for 14 years, plunging many families into financial hardship and seeing the worst cost of living crisis in living memory, with fuel, and food inflation also going through the roof.

while at the same time seeing the gap between the rich and the poor grow to record levels.

Some of the above problems were caused by global issues, but the Tories stood by and did very little, while energy companies were allowed to make unchecked record profits as families struggled.

Billions were wasted on HS2

Billions were spent on housing immigrants

Billions were wasted on the crazy Rwanda project

Billions were wasted on the futile Ukranian war

Billions were wasted on the PPE fiasco

Billions were given to the EU who we were supposed to of left.

Millions of people had their mental health impacted by the rediculous covid lockdowns
While Downingstreet partied.

And all while hard working families were left to struggle.

The interest rates were removed from the Governments control by the Brown Blair administration

They were, but the control could of been taken back at any time.

Especially during times of crisis,

Like a pandemic,

Or like a ..... cost of living crisis

For example

(Brown and Blair were super cunts)

During the pandemic BoE rate was 0.1%. The major driver for the relatively brief period of relatively high ingpflation would be Russia deciding to invade a neighbouring country

Totally agree with your observation in parentheses. I wonder how will look back on Starmer and Reeves in a few years time.

Tbf I'm no fan of Starmer either, but I'm prepared to be swayed given time, but it's not a very good start to his time in office.

In short we need a new political party to come into being, there's a massive void in British politics just waiting to be filled by people with the drive, determination and ambition to sort this shit show out.

Even Yvette Cooper only claimed £700m spent on Rwanda which, in terms of wasted, was crystallised the minute the plan was cancelled. We will never know whether it would have worked or not, in the meantime the boats still set out, illegals still arrive and people still die and billions will continue to be spent on housing immigrants.

Agree with pretty much the rest of your comments, iI guess the futility of the Ukraine war depends on (a) whether you are Ukrainian and (b) whether you think letting Putin walk all over them would embolden Russia or. not.

Not sure anyone could seriously argue with the last sentence and a half. I suspect QE is inflationary as well, which is what he is describing. Isn’t it?

QE is waste now? And happens because governments over spend?

You might want to read an economics text book

It was actually Tony Blair who opened the floodgates on immigration.

The Tories were trying to stem the tide with their I'll conceived Rwander debacle, deals with the French, and the temporary housing (before the planned deportation) in the barge and ex RAF bases, hotels, etc etc.

Starmer has cancelled the Rwander operation with absolutely no alternative plan in place, and he's releasing all immigrants from holding stations and hotels and B&B accommodation into the general population.
Which is in effect a green light to all who wish to come here.

That's why he's given up on immigration.

And yes, he's managed to totally give up on the issue in 1 fucking month!!!

The Rwanda stuff was just nonsense that was never going to work and had nothing to do with the 100s of thousands of people (net migration) entering the country in 2023.

1000's have been entering for donkeys years, way back to the Brown and Blair years where it was actively encouraged.

The Rwander deal was always a long shot, but at least it was a plan (albeit a bad one)

Labour have no plan, other than releasing all those currently detained awaiting processing and have effectively given up on exercising any control or deterant.

What could possibly go wrong?

A long shot that achieved nothing and cost billions of pounds; great. You're also mixing up legal and illegal migration here.

I think I have put elsewhere, Yvette Cooper claimed £700 million ( that’s less than one billion) was spent on the Rwanda scheme.

That became waste the moment Labour cancelled the scheme with no alternative in place. We will never know for sure if the scheme would have had any impact.

The reliance on legal immigration needs to be reduced. The paper you have attached says the following

Net migration is expected to fall from current levels in 2024 onwards, although the future outlook is highly uncertain.

Net migration at a level of 685,000 will put pressure on the housing market in excess of the number of homes that Labour want to have built per year. No wonder house prices are so high.

I rest my case.
Forecasts will always say what the people who commissioned and payed for the forecast wants them to say.

Put it this way, if the Tories couldn't stop illegal immigration with their draconian methods, how are Labour going to stop it with no methods and no plan?

Grendel

The Rwanda scheme (not that I thought it was a well conceived plan) was aimed at stopping illegal access routes.

Starmer says he will “smash the gangs” which is nonsense
