Dom Hyam - Blackburn bid ? (2 Viewers)

We need goals.

We already have a leaky defence, and we need to sell to stay afloat then Hyam goes.

I’m not happy like you are but if it’s a choice of a scorer, or a defender who at least several posters call out each week as too slow then Hyam it is.

It’s shit either way.
But those goals will be replaced (in theory) by the new singings making a big sale enables us to make.

What we're doing here is losing a key player for fuck all. If SBB is to be believed our vice captain is going to plug operating costs. The squad is being made weaker not following a model of buy develop sell buy, we're just making the squad weaker because the ownership won't run a championship club.

Don't agree.

Losing Hyam and replacing with nobody or a loan is just fucking stupid squad management.

I'd hate Gyokeres to go but if it was over £10m and we signed a striker to replace him and a midfielder (for example) then it makes sense that we're progressing the squad as well as balancing the books.

the problem is unlike in league one and league two it’s not easy to sell assets and replace them

If we really did turn down £5m for hamer its poor decision making. I suspect o hare was lined up to go as plan B and got crocked. No one seems actively to be pursuing Gyokeres.

our recruitment strategy frankly in the last two years has been poor as has contract extensions for players who are never going to play regularly. On a tight wage bill it’s proving an issue. We can’t afford to just have the likes of Kane and Walker seeing the contracts out, Kelly holidaying on a treatment table and the likes of palmer signing who has Amber flags everywhere. That’s not even starting with the likes of hillsner da Costa etc who were nonsense signings

Its not great. We really need to tough the season out

Hobson's choice really. Gyokeres does look indispensable though. Only reason it would be better he went is you'd hope the fee would be high enough to at least be able to fashion a replacement.

I just feel at present with so little of the window left, if Gyokeres left he would be a tougher ask to replace.

In honesty I don’t want either to leave.

I said a couple of months ago, if the club needs to sell they need to do it at the beginning of the window and not at the opposite end otherwise it'll find itself in a position where finding an adequate replacement is going to be extremely difficult.

They have to rely on the selling club being willing to sell, which is problematic when factoring in that the issue of a lack of time to find a replacement is transferred if they accept a bid from the club.

I just think a good goal scorer is harder to replace….especially so late in the window.

I don’t disagree about our ownership, we need them gone, but at the moment that’s just wishful thinking.

If we end up selling Gyokeres, Walker may yet have the opportunity to show why we signed him...

Agree with the rest, particularly Kelly who we inexplicably gave a two year extension to.

This I take issue with, the much spoken about Brentford model involved just that, Sell Watkins for big money - sign Toney for a more modest fee.

We won't be looking at the expenditure they did but if our recruitment team (when given actual cash instead of rummaging in the bargain basement) can bring in Gyokeres, Hamer, Sheaf and O'Hare for £2-3m then we should back them to do it again.

he doesn’t fit our system and also of course there’s waghorn who seems bombed out totally with Kane. Two of the most experienced championship players seemingly frozen out of an already shallow squad

Brentford were paying £44 million on wages and an owner who gifted a £100 million loan on interest fees non secured terms

Clear that would have to change if Gyokeres went, though. tbf we went a season with Walker and Godden as the main men, if injured at different times to one another!

Not two years after being promoted from L1 they weren't. They were still signing players to develop, sell and replace though.

He was writing off tens of millions in loans season after season and injected millions even prior to his ownership as he's a boyhood fan.

Any notion that we could ever replicate what they've done is sheer fantasy.

The principle is maybe there, though. Charlton did it on a smaller scale under Curbishley. The main problem we have, however, is it seems the percentage of transfer fees required for running costs is so much, that managing to bump us up with two or three decent, solid players with potential to replace doesn't actually look possible. If we were to sell Hyam and Gyokeres, say, then as you indeed suggest it should have been done early, and there should have been four, minimum, maybe five players of a decent level through the door - and I'm not talking the gambles like Palmer, I'm talking the players with an established track record already, looking to step up.

As it stands, even if we did rustle up some cash down the sofa for a replacement, it'd be a mild rush and potentially not done as cleanly as it should.

The only way this really makes any sense is if sisu are refusing to put the operating funds in because they are arranging a sale of the club and the new owners want the Crown Jewels in place.

Doubt it though.

Then you wouldn't be sanctioning transfers out either.

No one has ever claimed to be following Brentford’s model other than fans to be fair

We’re in a bit of a no man’s land by that if all reports are correct the club is quite clearly up for sale, and no owner would pump loads of money into a club they are trying to get rid of - In the meantime SISU will do the bare minimum to keep the club afloat until it is gone, player sales will obviously be a part of that and hopefully it’s just this one - Mike Ashley did it at Newcastle for years

Hopefully MR can keep us ticking along on the pitch and if we’re only to lose Hyam I think he can, selling Gyökeres would be a disaster mind you

On one of the podcasts he did can’t remember which one now, Boddy said that’s who we’re trying to emulate.

Any reason why sisu allowed us to bring together a great title winning squad when we were losing money hand over fist to play in Birmingham but when we're not far from a playoff championship team they decide it's time to asset strip?

Well I’d imagine every club in the League is trying to emulate Brentford, well run club who look like they will establish themselves in the Premier League for years to come - Who wouldn’t want to emulate that

fuck me this place is bleak, can't wait for Saturday so people can talk about some actual football instead of wildly exaggerating and speculating on things that haven't actually happened. Why is the default reaction always doom? so weird

Hyam is a good Championship CB, will be a miss but people need to stop losing their minds and imagining we wont replace him. he hasn't even gone yet and if he does then there is week left to business. Our management team are not thick they will have plans.

If our finances are as dire as some say id rather we make a sale to pay the bills (repare the pitch) than not and kick the problem down the line.

Boddy is quoted to have said it on a podcast and I'm sure he's repeated the comment publicly in the press as well. It's an idiotic comparison.

Is anything actually being asset stripped?

Perhaps we can put the money into the club and new contracts for Viktor, O’hare and Gus, if that happens then I’ll happily take a loan, perhaps that Van Hecke of Brighton?

People forget that in the summer of the St Andrews move the club would've received the second instalment from McNulty, sold both Chaplin and Bayliss as well as McCallum in January.

Conversely, the club hasn't received a windfall from a player sale/sell-on clause since Wilson was sold two years ago.

It's fairly obvious why the club is now struggling.

We’d never get him

In an ideal world I’d have gone for that Naby Sarr who has just signed for Reading on a free, but we don’t live in an ideal world

We can’t just keep offering new deals to players we offered contracts to a year ago

the club clearly can’t afford the contracts they proposed as they planned to sell them all

We were profiting on player sales and buying players and funding the club with the proceeds
