Can't believe more teams don't specialise with the long throw in.
Just like Stoke it gets em right up the pitch, and often as not they get the flick on.
I want TM to nominate someone through the summer to perfect the art and take advantage of teams ill prepared for this tactic,
Oh Pepe is a proper arse too.

Didn't it only ever work once for us though? Newcastle in the cup? :D

Yes his miss first half and long range shots second have been distinctly average at best. But you just know he will score in last minute and all the headlines will be him.

Iceland have been a very useful team for quite a while. I'm surprised everyone is so shocked at the result. And we all know Portugal are one of the worst underachievers in football.

Shocked though because the entire population of Iceland is 323,000. The whole populace is about the same as Coventry.

That is an amazing achievement for them to make a major final.

And when you just include the males of the right age (between 20 and 40) it's a 1 in 1800 chance of being in the squad!

I had a nice little win on betfair backing the Iceland draw yesterday.......needed it too....had a few bad punts so far this tournament.

Great finish for Hungarys 2nd goal too......so much time to think about it & fuck it up.....but calmly taken.

On a side note for the hooligans thread, anyone else notice what appeared to be a rather large uniformed mob right behind the goal in the hungary game.......they did nothing wrong, just noticed there were a lot of them & they looked more than a match for the Russians......

its actually a winnable group looking at the teams in there. If Hungary and Iceland play to a draw then this should make things really interesting from a Portugal perspective..

Pretty much. Slovakia look ok though with a couple of good players (the two goalscorers). Shows how wel Wales played.

Yes and it shows how dangerous they will be for us tomorrow. If we had held on v Russia they would be staring down the barrel now.

Hmmm....

Thing is, it doesn't quite work like that unfortunately, as teams don't put in the same performance every match. Wales did play well at the weekend, but Slovakia were awful. Today Slovakia have played very well and Russia have been terrible.

Bottom line is, Slovakia were dreadful last time out and have played well this. Doesn't just follow that Slovakia have put in the same performance.
With Russia, they set out to defend against us and it sort of worked, but today they have had to attack, their fancying their chances. They lack the pace to make a dent on the Slovakian defence though, thus far at least and therefore they have looked a much poorer side.

You are right of course that no team plays the same two games running. However Russia (until the final minute) looked pretty toothless v us. And that is panning out, so far, today. We let a golden opportunity slip by not trying to exploit their weakness.
Slovakia were no great shakes (and neither in my opinion were Wales)....but today it is very different. If we don't get a minimum of a point tomorrow it will start to look bleak for England.

I am not too worried. Russia have very much contributed to Slovakia looking so good today. The defending for that first goal was a schoolboy error of the highest order. Slovakia have played well, but just look how poor Russia are today.

We played well against Russia, we created a lot of chances, on another day we would have scored 3 or 4 against them, I can think of at least 3 attempts that went straight at the keeper, on another day they go a yard either side and we win comfortably.

I think we have a well balanced team and even though we dominated the majority of the game, never really looked in danger of being caught on the break which bodes well for our final 2 group games

Sure they said today that against us Russia didn't have a single shot from the 17th minute until the 90th. Very lucky to pick up a draw from that game, buy you know what, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Russia didn't beat Wales.

It is a game they obviously have to win and I think they will go home in disgrace if they don't get through and are sent home packing.

Expect to see a very different Russian team next time out.

Think Wales will beat Russia if they need to. Suspect it will be a draw tomorrow though. I have predicted a 2-2, but I wouldn't take much notice as I am hardly threatening the the champions league places in the predictions table!

One thing the Euros have made glaringly obvious is the value of a designated penalty-specialist (thinking of Romania here).
I wonder if Mowbray is watching and if this fact has sunk in yet?
And who is England's penalty taker if Rooney is not on the pitch?

Google say.. Kane takes Spurs pens apparently.

England needs to beat both Wales and Slovakia to progress. They also need big wins to boost their goal difference. I think they will do it. But there is a very real danger that England could slip up and go out.
