tbf for a fair old while the finals were the last eight, anyway. Graham Taylor's 'failure' still had us in the top few in Europe, as did Bobby Robson in '88.
But yeah, as said, you can only beat what's there, and we got to the final when the so called quality teams didn't. If Southgate is under pressure, then how about Didier Deschamps!
I do think some of the media negativity against Sterling was racist and you always felt he had to better than others to prove his worth
That still doesn’t account for winning just 1 knockout game in 68 years.
The Czech Republic beat the Netherlands in the knock out stages, so clearly weren’t a bad side. As for Croatia, World Cup finalists and took Spain to extra time. As for Scotland, fierce rivalries can provide shock results and have generally improved a lot since they qualified.
Even if Southgate isn’t the best manager, he’s delivering at major tournaments and that’s what he gets paid to do.
Well... Cameroon in 1990 was a pretty easy route, as was a fading Belgium at the time, Egypt(!) in the group stages... and we basically played well against netherlands and Germany, that tournament. There's no such thing as an 'easy route, just a long or a shirt run.Don't think he's under pressure .
I just think that the final once the stars aligned was pretty straightforward, as it was In 2018 to get to the semis .
We've never had easier routes
We never qualified for them all anywayWe’ve won more than one knockout game in 68 years haven’t we?

Part of the reason we've never had easier routes is because we don't usually get far enough to judge whether it's an 'easy' game or not!
I think a lot of it was also due to his antics off the pitch many years ago to be honest.

What antics were they?I think a lot of it was also due to his antics off the pitch many years ago to be honest.
Was Paul Gascoigne treated the same way for his off the field antics- domestic violence and so on?
Ched Evans got acquitted, do people give him an easy ride? Marlon King was given the red carpet.
It's not a competition to see who can be the biggest bellend.
Lucky for some
We've played 11 euros
Failed to get out the group in 4
Lost in the semi finals twice
Lost 1 final
Lost to (in knockouts )
Germany , Italy, Portugal, yugoslavia (68) and Iceland
Christ, Iceland. That was so bad I actually found it funny. We've played 11 euros

That is not the record of a top tier nation

Be fair now, we did come up against Icelands golden generationWe were poor in 2016 , overlap of the end of many greats retiring and a fresh bunch of talent arriving
No but the knockout games we've lost only 1 was against a side we really shouldnt be losing to..which makes the point of never winning a knockout game since 96 a bit more understandable
Also as I stated the word Cup and euros format has changed leading to potential easier games in the knockouts ..its definitely had an impact
We've only beaten 1 top 10 side in the last 3 tournaments mentioned by mucca
Italy beat 3 alone to win this tournament
Bought his mum a house. What antics were they?
I'm sorry , I really just don't agree with you about Southgate. So beating Germany could be considered a massive success for us and Southgate has evidently improved us in that regard, right?
Our teams in 2002-2010 really should’ve done better. Losing to a Brazil side when we had the lead, a Portugal team we were probably better than and a got hammered by Germany team we shouldn’t have even played because we managed to balls up a very kind group stage.
Sweden topped their group in both 2018 and 2021ahead of Germany then Spain - they also knocked Italy out to qualify in 2018 too. Clearly they’re a decent team despite a lack of superstars.
We would’ve played Spain the quarters had they finished first in a routine group for them. Who also needed extra time to beat Croatia and penalties to beat Switzerland. They’re very much in transition too and Italy were fortunate to beat Spain.
Denmark are underrated too. For all the plaudits Italy have got for their 34 game unbeaten streak, Denmark have lost 4 games in 30.
I just don’t understand the self-deprecation. Finding ways to discredit our runs.
You get to a semi-final or a final, you’ve had to play some decent teams to get there. Southgate has surpassed expectations in both tournaments he’s been in. Therefore, he’s a been a successful manager to date.
Worth noting that Southgate’s win % is higher than all his contemporaries bar Capello.

I doubt that will change
And that Brazil side in 2002 was very good ..won 7 matches in a row the most ever won at the world cup

Had we won penalties against Italy, would that have changed your mind?
Be honest now, are you Ringofsteel? If you get to a final and have a better squad than your opponent, have them on the ropes for half an hour, but then totally stop playing and then lose mainly due to your own decisions during the match, that is a failure.
Nobody cares about win/ loss percentages, they care about trophies
This is the problem- we accept failure and turn it into a weird kind of victory.
I doubt your Fergusons, Klopps- or even your Robins’ in fact would accept that we should all be happy, they would be wanting to know why the hell we didn’t finish the job when it was there on a plate

It doesn’t take much working out, he was very quick to rule out the possibility he was DongoBe honest now, are you Ringofsteel?

And ....a better manager
They made 8 changes and beat Wales without much sweat
It’s the fourth person I’ve been told I actually am, after also being told I owe various people twenty pounds. No I’m not, I just don’t answer any more
Sorry I must have missed the other two, who were they? It’s the fourth person I’ve been told I actually am, after also being told I owe various people twenty pounds. No I’m not, I just don’t answer any more
I’ll give you they have a better manager, but I do think our squad is stronger.
Sorry I must have missed the other two, who were they?
Nobody signs up to this forum, makes 1.5k posts in 1.5 months, if they weren’t a previous well known posterSomeone called Greg, Bant, and Dongo . Not sure who I owed twenty pounds to but there were a few people also telling me to pay my debts.
How many of our squad would get in theirs do you reckon .
Chiesa btw was a revelation .. Chelsea offered 100 Mill already
Midfield they are much stronger than we are and that showed on the day , and as bad as it sounds .. their aging centre halves were rarely troubled or bothered.
