It does tend to be, but with each case like this I’m increasingly of the view that capital punishment is justified. So much cruelty over such a prolonged timeframe and guilt is unquestionable.

Yeah it is. Religious weirdos or weirdos with strange views about what kids should be taught. There are very few, if any, kids that shouldn’t be in some form of schooling. If you’ve come to the conclusion on your own that yours is one of them you are probably wrong.

I don't love the idea of homeschooling but not everyone does it for the reasons you talk about. Also, choice is a thing. I'd argue people being indoctrinated into religions or attending religion-led schools does a lot more harm to kids and the world than a small number that get homeschooled.

Most home schoolers are the exact religious people you’re talking about. It’s literally what this thread is about. If they’re not weirdly religious they’ve got other weird beliefs that their kid would be better off being moderated away from by society.

Like in theory, sure if there’s parents out there with normal beliefs and a wide ranging subject knowledge and regular contact with peers of their own age and a variety of cultures and belief systems and also checks to ensure the child isn’t being abused. But let’s be honest there’s very few if any of those and at that point just send the kid to fucking school.

In a thread where home schooling was primarily used to hide the abuse. Yeah I am.

Your kid has a right to an education. Most people cannot provide this. They have a right to a social life and generally a life away from you to grow up.

I seem to remember you’ve got family who home school. I don’t know your circumstances maybe you’re in the tiny minority it’s not abusive, but the fact is it facilitates huge amounts of child abuse and the drawbacks significantly outweigh the benefits on a societal level.

Same reason I’m pro gun legislation, sure a few people might suffer minor harm or inconvenience but it’s nothing compared to the huge amount of harm saved. Very very few parents can offer their child the equivalent to a school on their own. Sadly a much larger number delude themselves into thinking they can.

Point of note regarding the very sad case of Daniel Pelka (and I, like everyone on here find it extremely upsetting) at the time of his death he was not open to Social Services, although he had been in the past. With that in mind am not sure what else social Services could have done.

Also a bloke at work 'homeschools' his kid. I use inverted commas because there is no education going on. She gets up at 10am every day, orders McDonald's on uber eats pretty much every day and generally just does nothing from what I can gather. Poor kid has got no chance.

How many of those home-schooled kids miss on on personal and social development because they're never around anyone else? And how many parents are actual able to provide a child with a good, balanced education? It's basically creating a human that will not be able to function in the real world.

And even with those that have problems such as autism, where a regular schooling may not be best for them SEND is still far more likely to benefit that person longer term than home-schooling.

There's plenty of home schooling clubs nowadays, there's a great science one I see.

One thing I worried about with I was considering it was the social side of it though to be fair!

Tbf to @shmmeee I think he has a point historically, post Covid I think the landscape has changed. A lot got used to homeschooling and in many cases still misguided, but lots will think they're doing right. Social interaction is the biggest miss imo though, rather than the curriculum.

On gun legislation, our rules were tightened post Dunblane. Since then, zero school shootings. Compare and contrast with USA, then come back and tell me it's a good idea.

You may be right about that but when families in 2024 appear to be having to fight harder to access SEND, is it prudent to remove the ability to home school children?
