I dont know , we had alot of rows over him at the time and I'm not about to start that up again

I hope he gets his career back on track

I doubt they said he was lazy as he’s been injured for virtually two years. He tried in January to play and he broke down again with and was out for another 10 weeks.
I just had a look at his Wiki page and under style of play it said:-

Walker is a pacey and athletic forward.[70] Danny Cowley nicknamed him "the Ghost" for his ability to appear from nowhere to score a goal.[61] He is a natural finisher, however, his work rate has been criticised.[61]

I'd take issue with the "natural finisher" comment, as we didn't see much of that here.
His stats certainly suggest he's lower league standard, so he's found his level.
He's definitely been unlucky with injuries though tbf.

Yeah shame how Walker's career has ended up.
Think a bit more luck with injuries and maybe a few more opportunities with us and he could have been a half decent Championship striker

I just think it was wrong place and wrong time.

Like Chaplin he seemed to be signed to play in a system that never worked but his confidence fell apart.

He looked OK in the first season when no one could go. Second season didn’t he score a couple then was dropped? Fans turned on him and he looked shot to pieces by the end.

For me the whole starting games thing is becoming an excuse which we still see now really . If a player scored a goal in those 30 minutes we'd use them in his stats (including those games started )
A striker coming off the bench against tired legs should be raring to go and not just that ready to prove a point .

I think walker suffered more because his off the ball work wasnt good enough

Walker never got a proper chance, and was definitely a natural finisher with great movement just victim to not being Matty Godden.
Then obviously Vik came no chance then.
First season with us 1 goal every 258 minutes is not a bad return for a 23 year old stepping up a division playing in a system that doesnt suit him.
Season after was limited on appearances but the emergence of Vik didnt help that.
Same goes for his final year with us.
Most of his appearances were 15/20 minute max spells, tell me how a striker regains confidence whilst barely being on the pitch to score a goal

For the purpose of this argument , godden scored 32 goals in 80 starts in the championship and worked tirelessly off the ball .. looking back now it would appear we never made a mistake with walker

But really he was 3rd choice in the end

He scored approximately 1 in 7 at championship level for us, which is shit.

I swear if his surname wasn't Walker he'd never of had a chance to play in the championship.
Awful player for us, offered zero workrate.
Nepo babies aren’t really a thing in professional football, aren’t they?

Some players have definitely been given more of a chance starting at an early age because of who their parents are which can lead to more interest in them generally

There are definitely professional footballers who shouldn't be , so I'm not sure why that doesnt extend
The suggestion that teams were paying decent money for a player off the back of their father’s reputation sounds ridiculous to me. It’s not Hollywood.

Kind of proves the point really - the son of one of the modern era’s most famous players, and yet has no professional career to speak of.

Yet apparently we were sufficiently dazzled by the legendary reputation of Des Walker to sign a totally shit player with no potential.

I dont think we signed him because his dad was des

But I think some players definitely get help at an earlier age because of who their dad's are irrespective of overall ability .

Well fatso does!

Your second point is undeniably true, as it is in all industries, but professional sport is perhaps the one industry where it’s near impossible for people to trade off their family name alone. None of the players mentioned so far amounted to anything in their careers for the simple reason they weren’t very good.

Jordi cruyff looked like he was going to be a big star at one point, but didn't really make much impact in 4 years at Man utd.

Well if I may tell you about premier league winner Darren Ferguson 😆, I joke ... I think James Pearson is the best example of a player that definitely traded off his family name because his dad was manager at leicester and he was absolutely useless and had a shocking career

James Pearson is more famous for his controversial off field behaviour, he managed to get himself and his dad sacked while at Leicester 🤣🤣🤣

Absolute classic.

That’s exactly my point - there’s only so much any professional player can trade off their dad’s name. If it was all about nepotism he’d get to play way above his ability level. Instead he was just a useless player with a shocking career as you said.

Considering people wanted us to sign Langstaff from Notts County last season and Tyler Walker’s record in L2 was fantastic, it wasn’t a bad signing at the time.

For whatever reason, he didn’t get look in after a decent first season with us. His career before joining us was pretty good so I would describe him as a nepo-baby.

His career has just gone downhill and that’s happened to many players. Tom Bayliss, Luke and George Thomas to name a couple of recent examples.

I remember Lincoln fans saying how lazy he was in the second spell he had there, he only lasted a handful of games, which was a surprise as he had his best run of scoring with them in the first spell, and they thought he'd pick up where he left off.
This is just utter crap and made up nonsense. He was out with pretty serious injuries, hence why he’s now gone out on loan.

Did you go on their forum at the time by any chance?

There was a turf war between the Godden and Walker camps.

Godden had his undesirable moments, but was unquestionably the better choice. Those in the other camp wouldn't, and still look like they won't, accept any criticism. Given now he's effectively playing non-league, it's quite funny seeing just how far some will go.

Without question Godden was the better player but he’s playing at that level as he’s been out injured for so long. If he stays injury free he’ll be back playing in the football league.
