Tragic news. It makes you wonder what has caused him to commit suicide. It will come out no doubt.

Very tragic and the fact it was suicide makes it more unbelievable. He had success so the question is why?
Suicide often suggested as a cowards way out...can't see that but you have to ask why was he so selfish in taking his own life?

I hope there is an explanation so we can understand this tragedy better.

RIP and thanks for the memories.

I'm shocked because he looked so happy on football focus yesterday talking about wales qualifying for 2014 world cup.

I wouldn't go down the coward/selfish route, this would need the kind of wherewithal that's rarely present in someone willingly taking their own life.

I agree, I've actually dealt with (and still do to some extent, and not just due to being a city fan!) depression and it's genuinely hard to actually try to describe what it's like to someone who hasn't experienced it, your mind can do horrible horrible things. You can become as certain that everyone would be better off without you alive as you are certain that rain is wet. I'm not trying to excuse it at all, but if it is actually down to depression, cowardice and selfishness rarely come into play.

That said, it's still incredibly shocking as he never really seemed like "that" type of person. It seems to be a much bigger issue with footballers these days, Collymore has been writing about it recently too.

RIP.

Hopefully this will publisise the dangers or effects of depression. I didnt realise Stan Collymore suffered with depression so much. Hes written a great article on his own experiences and his recent run in with despression. I think the article was only written yesterday aswell.

Such a shame.

Given just how much of a problem it is in cricket-a less pressurized sport, if anything-you have to think that there is all sorts behind closed doors that we never hear about. But then, it's probably no more an issue in football than it is throughout our population as a whole. It's even easier to suffer badly from a mental health problem if you have nothing.

You really wouldn't expect this from a guy like him. I wonder if we'll ever know why :(

The exact same thing happened with Justin Fashnu who also committed suicide because of it, I think if this does turn out to be something like that then the Sunday papers need nailing to the wall, there's an awful lot of vermin "journalists" around now.

Well, we have no idea what the specifics are if those allegations are true. But my disgust at the reporting media in general has been with me for a fair few years now. Who are we to judge anyone and who are they to drive someone to such drastic consequences.

Not at all. He probably thought he would save his family from it although ironically will not have achieved that, however traditionally suicidial people are not thinking rationally.

Not a great way to go,taking your own life. He must have been going through dark times. Great bloke great player selfish way to go. R.I.P speed. God bless your poor children and wife

Very, very sad news - one of the few players in the Premiership you couldn't possibly say a bad word about. Clearly loved playing football and, unlike so many of his peers, treated the game with respect.

Having battled the big D myself for several years and largely beaten it thanks to getting the right help (though it still rears its ugly little head from time to time) I have every sympathy with him - we may sit here & think oh, look at that guy, he's got the money, the looks, the lifestyle, a great family, great job etc, but if he was indeed suffering from depression (and noone has yet confirmed that he was) he wouldn't have seen it that way.

Anyone who's read Stan Collymore's autobiography will be aware of how little support depressed footballers get - especially when, in Stan's case, you have a dick like John Gregory as manager. Maybe Speed didn't tell anyone about his illness, or maybe he did & wasn't taken seriously, who knows. Anyway, RIP Gary.

really sad way to go for such a nice bloke (well from what i have seen of him). Just one of those things that puts the world (and football) into perspective really. RIP Gary

Some stupid posts on here and hope most other clubs dont pick up on it,,, jokes and judging someone before any facts have come out!!!!!!!!!!! This man had done more in football than most and as a player someone who most of players today should look at now and try to copy.

So unless you know the man personally, comment about what you seen on a football pitch and what has been lost, instead of talking out your arse's.....
