Very, very sad news - one of the few players in the Premiership you couldn't possibly say a bad word about. Clearly loved playing football and, unlike so many of his peers, treated the game with respect.
Having battled the big D myself for several years and largely beaten it thanks to getting the right help (though it still rears its ugly little head from time to time) I have every sympathy with him - we may sit here & think oh, look at that guy, he's got the money, the looks, the lifestyle, a great family, great job etc, but if he was indeed suffering from depression (and noone has yet confirmed that he was) he wouldn't have seen it that way.
Anyone who's read Stan Collymore's autobiography will be aware of how little support depressed footballers get - especially when, in Stan's case, you have a dick like John Gregory as manager. Maybe Speed didn't tell anyone about his illness, or maybe he did & wasn't taken seriously, who knows. Anyway, RIP Gary.
