BSB, you can see wy they're doing their best to keep May away from the public and the press, except for pre-screened questions. When they wheeled her out to try and repair the damage from their manifesto launch it was a disaster.

The rest of Europe must be rubbing their hands with glee that it will be her and Boris who are negotiating Brexit.

Yes Pinochet.

South American politics has always fascinated me - especially how the various dictators are viewed by the UK and especially the ideological left.

If you actually look at his record both in terms of social and economic policy then there were huge strides taken.

Pinochet was allied by thatcher because of his significant contribution to the war effort in the Falklands. If you bother to read up on it the help was significant and potentially damaging to Chile if they lost the war.

Thatcher had no direct contact while Prime Minister - released papers prove that with no question - so actually she had no reason to get involved afterwards. So in some ways her support has to be admired following his arrest. If it was Dianne Abbott no doubt she'd have been down the hairdressers. me McDonnell would be saying sorry a lot and Mr Corbyn doing his judas act and denying any knowledge of them. Still whatever thatchers failings courage and self belief are not on that list

As for Pinochet close your eyed and imagine him with a beret or a great big cigar. There - all of a sudden he's a hero and a Marxist revolutionary.

Major and Blair (yes, him!) deserve a lot of credit for NI.

They moved away from the confrontational approach of Thatcher - seems Grendel would have us back there...

Mr McDonnell opposed that agreement - seems him and thatcher are two peas in a pod.

Thank goodness breathing is involuntary. If people needed to think about breathing then I could see the end of the species.

Hitler, lovely man you know. Good with pets. Vegetarian. Lead economic miracle in rebuilding Germany when it became a democratic country.

So anyway.... Mandela - terrorist or hero?
Unless he was framed...he was both I guess...depending who you are and how you look at it. Close ones of the victims would automatically say terrorist & probably never hail him as a hero

Last paragraph made me smile. The rest ideological left was where you lost me. You can't pick and choose your nasty dictators to make or break a point. I was only saying him as a point about the IRA and contact. Thatcher and Mandela interesting too

If anyone want to get into a bit of political philosophy then I would recommend the Two Treaties of Government and the Right to revolution.

John Locke (the guy who invented America) argued that anyone has the right to overthrow a government when it acted like a Tyranny.

It's great reading.

Straight from wiki

The Second Treatise outlines a theory of civil society. Locke begins by describing the state of nature, a picture much more stable than Thomas Hobbes' state of "war of every man against every man," and argues that all men are created equal in the state of nature by God. From this, he goes on to explain the hypothetical rise of property and civilization, in the process explaining that the only legitimate governments are those that have the consent of the people. Therefore, any government that rules without the consent of the people can, in theory, be overthrown.

Two Treatises of Government - Wikipedia

Always good to keep asking the question of where did the consent from the people come for the creation of the WMCA?

I saw Macron on TV last night, well a recording of a few weeks back when there were allegations of Russian tampering with his email just before the election, he was unflustered, you could see him pause to think for a few seconds then he answered clearly in English & walked off assuring the journo's that all was being dealt with. Even if he was bullshitting wildly he gave the right impression.

And how great it is to finally hear him questioned properly.

Well done to Emma Barnett. Excellent job.

Where is McDonnell being hidden since he messed up over Brexit questioning?

Still waiting for someone to get May to answer a question, any question.

she did answer a question on school meals the other morning and made a complete hash of the costs. Not surprised you missed it, you won't be shocked to hear it didn't get a fraction of the coverage that Corbyns child care screw up got.

Any views on labours Garden tax that seems to have slipped the net?

There's loads of false reports in the usual right wing rags.
As you'd expect made up bull shit. It's not part of Labours manifesto but it is been considered.
It's an idea that the Adam Smith institute agrees with so if the tories win expect them to introduce it any way.
If they introduce it I'd be worse off but I've said many times I'll willingly pay more if it goes towards preventing class sizes of 35 plus kids, (be the norm come next September), or helping the NHS.

Talking of the NHS and unreported policy, none of said right wing rags seem to be reporting on tory plans to introduce the Naylor report.
