February fixtures could be make or break for us regards automatic or play offs

Re February fixtures
We have to play Luton,Mansfield and Accrington in that month
Those three in my opinion will be close to the automatic places

Updated for Stevenage result 1-1

Same points as Portsmouth were at this stage last season as they actually lost to Stevenage 2-1 in their 19th game.

Win your home games - draw your away is the rule...

Do that and we'll finish on 86 points, the last 3 seasons have needed 85 for automatic so there's not much wiggle room for losses!

but we have good away form win wise so if we win home too we can make wriggle room for losses(hopefulyl not needed lol)

Very true... win 1 in 3 away games and win your home is the same outcome i suppose! Anything more than that from your away games gives you room for not winning at home!

Who knows.....

Updated for Crawley result 1-1.

So we're still in the playoffs and not too far behind Portsmouth still, but seeing as Pompey really picked up in the second half of season we could do with doing the same!

yup thats what we gotta do. in a way it might be a good thing that we have not hit any sort of consistent good form yet. lots of room for improvement.

Portsmouth's form just kept getting better - last 12 games they only lost 1 and picked up 31 points out of a possible 36, if we can get 12 games like that in at any stage we'll be fine!

Agree we have yet to look that good and we're still there or there abouts which is promising, its just whether we can actually have a good spell!

Updated for Morecambe result 2-0 loss.

Its the first time since GW5 which we've dropped behind playoff position form.

its also looking less relevant me comparing us to Portsmouth last year. Champions is looking very slim hope now!!!

I don't know where we will finish but on the home games I've seen this season (missed 1 home). I expect us to finish lower than our current position . We just don't start the games as though we really want to impose ourselves on the opposition . Games don't seem to start for us until the second half and by then we maybe a goal down and faced with a defensive wall that we haven't got a clue how to brake down . I expect us to finish lower than our current position.

All pretty reasonable comments, and hard to argue with at the minute.

Apart from maybe Notts C first game - we really haven't looked like we are that comfortable in this league which is disappointing as you'd argue that we we're up there with the favourites at the start of the season

January window will tell if there is still a player budget or the injuries to Jones & Andreau have scuppered the season.

Just hoping there is no repeat of Stephen Hunt and other garbage loans coming in.

Updated for Cheltenham result 2-1 win

Sneaked back into playoff form - still only 3 points behind Pompey last year and only being 4 points off automatics really not a bad position to be in so far - and still without that good run we're all waiting for!

Updated for both Wycombe win 3-2 and Port Vail loss 1-0... and we pass the half way stage.

Still in playoff form (just!)

If we match our first half of the season performance we will end on 76 points which hasn't been enough to get automatics in any of the last 10 years. It would however have got us in the playoffs in 9/10 of the last 10 seasons.

It's looking like we will need approx 85 points to hit automatics meaning we need another 47 points from a remaining 22 games (or 15 wins and a couple of draws). Difficult to see with our current inconsistency.

In the second half of their season Pompey did win 15 games though.

In more positive news, 4 more wins should see us safe at the other end!

Merry Christmas all!

I'm sure it will all click into place soon, and we emulate the Man City winning streak

Sound like a broken record but still on to match Pompey last year and still looking good for a playoff place!

Roll on an improved 2018!

Happy new year all!

Cementing play off form and keeping the points tally ticking over

14 more wins should confirm autos!

Updated for:
Exeter loss 1-0
Swindon win 3-1

Well over half way now - still on course for play off place, couple of teams behind us starting to sneak up at the right time (Mansfield/Newport) and Notts County slipping up. All still to play for!

12 wins out of last 18 would see us looking very good for autos!

But anyway - onto the FA cup, and as we've won every game so far I'm predicting we win it!

Updated for Cambridge win 3-1

We hit 50 points after 29 games (average of 1.72 ppg) meaning with the same form we'll finish on 79 points, which would only be enough for automatics in 2 of last 10 years, and very likely not enough this season!

however last 6 games we've averaged 2 ppg and if we keep that up we will finish on 84 points which will likely be very close as last 3 seasons you've needed 85!

How do you factor in that with so many clubs in the running - 9 excluding Luton - for 2 places the points requirement may fall? More teams will drop points to fellow contenders. Playing the club that are 10th would usually be seen as a certain win, not this year, it could be Accrington Stanley.

It will be a lot less this year. theres 10 teams in it ! at the moment they all taking points off eachother.

Usually at this point in the season there 2 teams averaging 2 ppg. Not even close this year. Luton are bang on at 2ppg. Which has been dropping.

I think the fact that there are so many almost balances itself out, like you say, more will drop points, but equally there are more involved from the start so more competition and more likely some of the 9 will keep picking up points in line with us.

You then have teams like Notts C who are above us but have hit a bad patch, but then teams below us who are hitting form and overtaking us (Exeter), so again they kind of net out

Its all down to how we keep picking up points really! if we win all our games we'll win the league, if we lose them all at least we're already safe from relegation!

Com
Team P GD Pts
1 Doncaster 30 24 63
2 Plymouth 29 18 60
3 Carlisle 30 9 52
4 Luton 30 15 49
5 Exeter 30 16 48
6 Portsmouth 29 14 48
7 Mansfield 30 7 46

Table this time last year after 29/30 games.

As you can see 2nd place has 60 points!!! at this point last year!

2nd place this year has 52 points after 29 games! huge difference!

Agree - but its the top 3 that go up not 2. 3rd place only has 1 more point than current league table...

The fact that Portsmouth won it last year and were 15 points behind at that stage shows that teams from further down can still easily pick up enough points to get into top 3 and push the "target" up

The thing that worries me is team that are there or there abouts most years will eventually go up. Seeing Luton, Exeter and Mansfield in the top 7 mean they know how to pick up points in this league and can address what went wrong last year.
