Could be done.
He's been saying the right things while he was away
Understands about getting game time regularly.
That's what hindered his progression previously.
Obviously filthy Luca and sunnier climates or the opportunity to be a flight or Train away from his girlfriend have sway.

I do think his best move would be to complete the season here, he's in the form of his life and it's pretty rare that a January signing goes straight in and hits the ground running

Imagine signing for somebody like Everton with the expectation? It'd ruin him if he didn't perform straight away

He could also end up back in the Championship if he signs for the wrong PL team now.

plus the last thing he needs when he's just breaking into international football is to be sat on the bench in the PL. Not easy to balance somewhere he gets game time but has minimal risk of relegation. The teams looking to buy in January will likely be the ones in trouble.

Phrasing a bit weird in that article.

Planning to offer him a new deal in January? Just do it now.

I can't help but think this is trying to drive up the asking price without actually having to put a contract in front of him.

We always seem to offer in Jan, O’Hare signed his on the 7th I think and IIRC said he basically signed it as soon as it was out in from of him.

Feels like we're straining a little to make an argument for staying that would (completely coincidentally) be in our interests!

Personally if I was Gyokeres I'd be more worried about a goal drought/bad injury/economic downturn between now and the summer narrowing my options.

Obviously it is in our interests for him to sign a new deal, but if Gyokeres had as negative a mindset as you portray I don't think he'd be half the player he is.

We’re currently offering Vik a new contract. Try an fend off West Ham and Palace. Will it work? We will know by January 31st

The new owner has said no sales in January. summer who knows would depend where we are, but unlike before a lot of whatever we get fee wise for Vik or any of the others should be used for squad strengthening.

Agent might’ve said talk to you in January want to understand the market. I dunno…that’s probably what I’d do

Exactly. He’s a top class athlete. They always back themselves - he’ll easily go to a team that offers him treble wages and in a higher league without hesitation.

I doubt a new deal we could offer will delay the inevitable.. might get is more money but his future isn't at coventry city

If you were in his position with an immediate big money move to the top flight on the table, or the risk of getting an injury or drop in form for another 6 months in the Championship, honestly which would you choose?

We need to get a bidding war going then wish him every success.

If we can keep him until the summer, then we can have a free role of the dice at promotion this season, could invest 5mill in the side in January then if it doesn't work out, sell Gyokeres and still be 15mill or so ahead of where we are.

This assumes big Doug isn't another reincarnation of Sisu and has money to spend.

It's a real shame that for most associated with the PL that they're in such a bubble. I bet none of those making those kind of comments have even seen Gyökeres play (except against them in the cup).

Yes they were burned by the Adam Armstrong deal but, as I said at the time, there were huge red flags over that move which they obviously ignored.
what red flags mate?

Vik according to this site outperforms his xG but underperforms his xA, no surprise there:

This site has him outperforming xG to a greater extent:

His shots taken and on target vs off target is exceptional, a goal every 4 shots. His dribbling is amazing. Again, no surprise to anybody but his weakness is passing or seeing when there is an assist on.

Isn’t xA more about making the pass but it not being finished? So not really the players fault.

Not sure if there is a “pass not taken” stat, would be interesting if there wat though. Or is his xA low compared to other strikers? Again could be because of how he’s used. Not that I’m disagreeing that he can be too greedy.

OK, fair point. Though it's probably fair to say Vik's execution of a final pass can be a bit lacking even when he makes it.

Tough decision for the player. A prem team struggling is not the ideal place to go. After all we could conceivably get promoted ourselves.
yes the wages would be higher but we can presumably offer him a new improved contract now Mr King is in the chair with bonus add ons for promotion and goals scored etc. his development is very important and he plays every week if fit. No I think he would be wise to stay, carry on with his form and improve his price for the summer should we not get promoted ourselves.

Lol who do Southampton think they should be aiming for exactly? About time they got relegated isn't it?

they will do with the welsh lunatic in charge! it may well work in the championship abusing players from the side lines but trying to do it to premiership players is a different matter

If a Premiership club comes in for him in Jan it will be very difficult to keep hold of him. I know King said we won’t sell anyone, but you can’t turn down big money especially if a player wants to leave and also to the league above.

£15m absolute minimum, with a lot reinvested. Only issue for me is who you can pick up, unless it's from a lower division. You pay over the odds, plus there will be a bun fight for them (e.g. Scott Twine type signings) Incidentally, there is an example of a footballer disappearing off the radar through choosing the wrong move football wise, even if his bank balance is healthier. Overall, I'd sooner we wait until the summer for the seemingly inevitable. Or get promoted.

Which is where we need to be alert to such players available in other countries. For example the current front two at Heerenveen

There could well be interest from abroad too, got to keep him for the rest of the season if we want to seriously challenge for promotion, he is vital to how we currently play to change mid-season is a big risk in my opinion.
