I just want to deal in facts - which coach is responsible for which facet of play? Is Williams solely in charge of all our defensive work? Or does he just work with the defenders? Does he tell Lampard how our team should defend? How is his coaching style different from Dennis Lawrence’s? What part of his coaching regimen is failing?
I’d be genuinely interested to learn the answers to these questions (I assume you can enlighten me). Otherwise it’s just angry fans shouting at a black box.
As I see it, and this isn’t borne from outright fact just observation, I think Lawrence was a defensive coach less in term of ‘coach of defenders’ and more an ‘out of possession’ coach. The difference in terms of pressing patterns when he came in was very noticeable. Likewise, I get the impression that Viveash was the ‘in possession’ coach.
Since Lawrence moved on, I would also say it’s noticeable how our pressing patterns have largely disappeared. Clearly I don’t know the remit of the new coaches to understand what they are trying to implement, but safe to say it’s not got through yet. As I’ve said in another thread, I think we want to play a high pressing game eventually but the fitness to carry it out is miles off, so we’re making do for the time being.
