I was quoting Richard Cockerill from Tigers. Born in Coventry, coaches Tigers and understands our demographic, he can not see where their support will come from. He went on to say that he would think that they are hoping to attract fans from the surrounding conurbations that occasionally watch Leicester, Worcester and Northampton but are not willing to travel.

He's a Rugby lad - played for Newbold; then went Lions to Coventry and onwards. Don't steal Rugby's sons, please ;-)

If you compare Wasps first ever game at the Ricoh with a bog standard crowd against Walsall and say 'look how much better that is', it comes across as gloating. As I said, can't jeapordise the free tickets.

Maybe it could be seen as an article reflecting the shift in balance of power in the sporting world in Coventry right now? You may not like it, but it's the truth. And I'm not gloating either - before the accusation comes in so

That's fair comment. I see your point. And I know "I don't write the headlines / sub headings" probably won't cut it as a response!

tbf to you... you don't ;)

Personally think the criticism of you for this one ;) is a bit harsh. Must pick up on the having to cover Wasps though. Northants press didn't cover CCFC after the initial scaremongering of residents about the disruption the huge crowds would bring :)D) so while I'm not surprised you're covering them (you as in the paper, rather than 'you'), it's not that you *have* to...

(and yes, I'm aware that the dif is permanent v temporary)

Newspapers always make choices don't they. Now I wouldn't blame you. Much like I'm merely hired scum where I work, the same applies no doubt for you and, well, bills to pay and the like ;) but it's a conscious decision by the paper how to present things... whichever directions they choose.

The second line of the article is a carbon copy of the sub headline anyway.

I would suggest there are a few more than 3000 freebies, Got mine through the Rugby club could have had 20+ if I wanted

Considering the 3500 free tickets were those given to local schools and rugby clubs, I'm not sure why you getting free tickets from the rugby club would suggest there were more freebies...

Cov Rugby are on the up i'll have you know ,go up a league and they may need another covered stand.

Did actually think it'd be... interesting if Wasps slumped, CRFC got a promotion... the odd local businessman put a few more funds into CRFC.

The difference isn't *that* great that it's insurmountable atm...

Who was it? Get them on here in front of the jury / foamy mouthes.

People aren't silly, they can see how things are meant ;)

The same as refs can see blows under the belt in boxing sometimes!

Again, as I've posted before; freebies to which rugby club? I attended a meeting with 40-off RFU affiliated clubs; attended by Rossborough right down to representatives of the smallest clubs, and they were only giving 2 free tickets in you bought 10. So, no ticket confetti from what I saw. Schools, yes - I've heard this, but not clubs

It should be treated with the utmost disdain for the damage it will cause 2 of the city's own sports clubs.

I expect this will delight many on here, probably have a good circle jerk about it tonight with Nick Eastwood.

It probably delighted you more to make this statement. You clearly need people to say they're going otherwise you'll end up disapointed.

Yeah, literally outflanked.

Which is kind of what makes shifting Wasps all the more baffling. Want top flight rugby in the city? A man of Richardson's seeming means could have got them up (relatively) easily. Maybe another question should be whether the owner ever approached CRFC with an offer to buy them and, if so, what was the result and, if not, why not?

You don't know the damage it will cause CRFC; with player exchange, and remapping the catchment so that local talent stays in the area as opposed to going to Worcester it could help the rugby club. You may not like that. You may not agree with it - but you can't judge, on a categoric basis, that the influence will be unconditionally negative. You simply can't

On the other hand, it can't be said it is positive (I am not saying you are). I mean the Councillors who decided on behalf of them and CCFC that it will be good for them both.

I'd guess it will probably help CRFC get to the championship, but it won't help them make it to the premiership. There again, considering there's a side in the championship with a billionaire backer that isn't guaranteed to make it to the premiership (and failed last season too), I think Cov will face more issues than Wasps to make it to the top.

I have never said it's inherently positive Nick - you know that. However, there is one outcome that would be positive for rugby in the area. Not if you dislike franchise sport - I see that. But if Wasps make Coventry the European rugby powerhouse they are promising, the player exchange with CRFC works, the area is remapped by the RFU so local talent stays locally, and the council's Rugby City initiative works - then it is a positive. Again, I am not saying I think it will work - just saying there are plans which do have a positive local flavour

I wouldn't disagree with much of that

No I know, that is why I made sure in brackets :)

It is all well and good them saying how good it will be, at the minute it is like hearing how amazing CCFC's new stadium will be for the city too.

The only difference on the latter is that I think Wasps genuinely want to achieve this - insomuch as anything else as it serves themselves best to do so. I don't believe there is a new CCFC stadium - like most others. That's the sad thing

Problem is, even if you take the emotion away from that, it's a hell of a gamble isn't it.

Sure, best case it might all go gloriously. Worst case however, nobody's going to bother catching Wasps on the way down as they've got no roots here, and if they've knocked out the two major(ish) sporting sides already in the city before they fall, we could end up with... not a lot.

I dunno, it seems the kind of gamble a... hedge fund would make, not a city council!

So their first game at their new home and they can only fill it just over half, and this includes 6500 free tickets and the season ticket holders who may of may not turn up as one thing is for sure not all will ,as some are turning there back on the club for moving 100 miles from there original fan base.

So instead of rejoicing by the likes of the CT and council, they should be hugely worried, and I agree with Grendal, never thought I'd write that, and the others on here that come the fourth game onwards the crowds will plummet .

Thank The Lord for the day outgoings far outweigh incomings ,and they realise they have committed themselves to something that will kill the club once and for all. I can not see how they will survive longer than three years and I rejoice in that .

i am even thinking of going to the Butts and support a true Cov team even though I can't stand rugby, and I feel more and more will feel like me in the near future.

let them stand in the glow that they have just half filled their new stadium for their showpiece game, come 2017 they hopefully would have gone bust and entered the rugby graveyard high in the sky

Again, share some ground here. I can't see that even a worst-case scenario would hurt CRFC that much. If the RFU remapping takes place, they get talent that currently routed to Worcester, at least for a while. Look at their current gates - they're not going to be impacted by Wasps are they?

That leaves CCFC. Who's is the gamble? The football club wants to build anew. Against that backdrop, how does the council's decision impact them?

The best case scenario (for me) would be if this does at least remind the local public we have teams that desperately need support. Not just CRFC or CCFC either. if fed up wtih CCFC and dispirited, plenty of other options in the area already... and just a small increase in crowds could go a long way for the 'lesser' sides in the area.

As I suggested when it first became apparent ,they have a huge catchment with the right Socio Economic group In a 40mile radius .

Personally I'd Imagine they're disappointed at this point .

If they can't get to 22k-25K I don't think It bodes well for when the novelty wears off .

They also have 2 Other PL clubs within that 40 mile radius.
