Stats have their place, but i think our scouts might actually attend matches and watch players rather than just googling some random stats sight. Most clubs, including our own, are using stats to guide our recruitment policy.
Do you reckon one our scouts fancied a game of footy in Turkey whilst on their trip for a hair transplant and stumbled across Haji Wright?

Or maybe you think anyone with an Internet connection could be a talent scout now?
Stats help with sifting thousands of possible signings m but proper due diligence involves watching a player play. Our very good recruitment has been heavily data driven the last 5 or so years
How the fuck did Dasilva slip through the net????Our very good recruitment has been heavily data driven the last 5 or so years
There is always something to be said for the good old fashioned eye test. It is after all how we came across Sakamoto.Stats help with sifting thousands of possible signings m but proper due diligence involves watching a player play.
Tbf, how they handled Gyokeres once he was in the club is more on the management/coaching team. You'd have to say they still did well do find a player like playing for a club that i think was Swedish Second Division at the time. How the fuck did Dasilva slip through the net????
Seriously though, Brighton are said to have one of the best stat driven recruitment set ups in the country, but they still let Gyokeres go for peanuts.
Nothing can beat an experienced eye, look what MR has done with players like Mark Mcnulty, a player who excelled here but has been dog shit absolutely everywhere else.
Something was definitely wrong at Brighton and Swansea for a player like Gyokeres to be noticed, recruited, and later let go for £1m, and then subsequently to be valued at eu100millionTbf, how they handled Gyokeres once he was in the club is more on the management/coaching team. 74.6% of stats are meaningless, the other 29% are just bullshit.
And 100% of those who rely on them are too stupid to understand the value of experience.100% of people who disparage stats are too stupid to understand them.
As much as McNulty, Vik, Simms & Wright have been successes, we have had a few strikers under Robins reign that haven't worked out, and were probably some of the top earners at the time.Something was definitely wrong at Brighton and Swansea for a player like Gyokeres to be noticed, recruited, and later let go for £1m, and then subsequently to be valued at eu100million
He always had the raw materials, height, pace, power, and a bit of skill etc, not to mention a great work ethic.
I was at Stoke away when he ran with the ball from the half way line and smashed it into the net, instant hero status!
No one around me could believe we got him for so little.
Maybe he just needed a run of games and a boss that had faith in him. (Much like Mark Mcknulty and Simms?)

Waghorn
Clarke-Harris
Walker
McGuire
True, but I don't think they cost much, so as such probably worth a punt, and the best we could get for our budget back then.As much as McNulty, Vik, Simms & Wright have been successes, we have had a few strikers under Robins reign that haven't worked out, and were probably some of the top earners at the time.

Waghorn was a quality player, who looked to of lost his pace.
Clarke Harris had all the attributes and tbf has had a fantastic scoring record since leaving. Rumour has it his attitude may have been questionable at times.
Walker had scored goals elsewhere, but was just lazy imo, and Mcguire was a decent player, just never a goalscorer.
Interestingly these "failures" occurred under our stats driven recruitment policy!!!! (#shmmeee) just saying
So "statistically" the taller you are, the more aerial duels you win?Just to point out. Dasilvas aerial duel success rate (31%) while much worse than Bidwell (~51%) is about the same as van Ewijks (36%).
Maguire is a bit of a stretch. He was a short term deal to fill the bench. I’d agree with the others. Though Walker started OK, and Clarke Harris did well elsewhere just not with us.
I think he’s got a decent record for strikers. Godden is one of our all time top scorers up with the likes of Dublin and other greats. Vik is Vik. McNulty in L2 was a 20 a season striker.
We had years wishing for a 20 a season striker and we’ve had five in seven years.
Gyokeres was quite tall but relatively poor in the air.So "statistically" the taller you are, the more aerial duels you win?
Who would of thought?
Thank fuck for statistics!!!
Was he Robins?
We had some good ones before TBF him Clarke Armstrong and Wilson come to mind.
This was us in the Champ last time:

He 'inherited' Clarke but I'm sure he went & got McGoldrick on loan shortly before Clarke left
Obviously not quite as tall as the centre half's who marked him though, so I stand by my previous statement.Gyokeres was quite tall but relatively poor in the air.
David Speedie would have been shorter than Gyokeres but was far better in the air.Obviously not quite as tall as the centre half's who marked him though, so I stand by my previous statement.
By 'would have been' do you mean was?David Speedie would have been shorter than Gyokeres but was far better in the air.
Surely "is".... He's not dead.... Is he!??....By 'would have been' do you mean was?

I’m 110% with you on this oneAnd 100% of those who rely on them are too stupid to understand the value of experience.
100% correct. Subjective assessments by partial humans can be wildly variable. Just look at the judgements on here in the Player Ratings thread after each match. You guys watch a lot of football but opinions are all over the shop.100% of people who disparage stats are too stupid to understand them.
But mine are always right. So if you hire people who actually know football we will be ok100% correct. Subjective assessments by partial humans can be wildly variable.
