So our player was in our own half and was off side?
No he was offside in their half but came back from the offside position and "interfered" with the ball (which is the offence) back in our half. The freekick is where the offence (interfered with the ball/play) happened. I think this just have been changed when we stopped just giving offsides for offsides and started waiting to see if there was any interference in play.

Cheers for clearing that up. Part of the confusion for me was the ref indicated where the kick was. Then as he ran off a player threw it forward onto the half way line. Then they swopped who was taking the kick and he threw it forward again a yard into our half.

Just seemed like the normal yard pinching players do every week and get away with. Like a free kick they had where the ref sprayed his line and put the ball on it. Then their player walks up and still moved the ball a foot further forward.
