Never understood why, if you have to play someone out of position (which we didn't in this case) why managers always seem to choose youngsters to do it. They're clearly going to be less experienced and more nervous even in their natural position so why make it harder for them.

Thought Josh did well last night. Some good tight dribbling around their box which caused them problems. Strange decision to throw him back to RWB when we had Kane on the bench. This will probably be Kelly's last season, so a good chance for Eccles to compete with Sheaf, Hamer and Allen for the centre midfield position.

Interesting to see how he gets on next to Hamer at the weekend.

At least we now have options and with O'Hare (and Kelly to an extent) returning we're looking better stocked in midfield than a few weeks ago.

I've been impressed with Eccles, absolutely love it when "One of our own" breaks through, it's over to him now to take his chance.
Encouraging start.

Credit for Eccles for a nice ball into Waghorn's feet in the run up to the goal, he's been criticised for safe passing but that is the type of adventure that opens the game up

I’ve always been impressed with him, admittedly had poor start to the season at Sunderland and Hull which attracted some needless “he ain’t good enough” comments from the usual suspects on here but now in his favourable cm position is developing into almost an automatic choice, BUT he is not a fullback.

Should have brought Kane on instead of switching Eccles to RWB

100%. The lads just rebuilt his confidence by playing in his proper position as well as looking very good and then gets shoved at RWB when we’ve got a better one on the bench. Also, how does that keep Kane motivated ?!

Can’t really knock Robins as it was a great result last night but think that was an iffy call

Personally think people are overrreacting to his RWB performance. He was fine defensively - few poor passes but that can be said for the whole back 5 yesterday

I imagine he will be given a break on Tuesday with Sheaf coming back. However, he will be a little unlucky, given the wins and clean sheets whilst he has been playing. Sheaf is a more consistently accurate passer, but Eccles has telescopic legs and is decent in the air. I think he has more pace than Sheaf too.

I thought he was terrific in the week, not as good today had a few loose touches and gave the ball away a few times. But still a decent performance. Think he will be take out on Tuesday though.

Thought we really missed Sheaf today, both defensively and as an out ball, Eccles needs to watch his positioning and work on his upper body strength before he’s ready to be a Championship CM IMO. I could see him getting time at RWB in the mean time.

Listening back to the phone in I think Oggy made a strong point that with our more defensive set up there's less of an obvious out ball for the midfielders to go for, as Bidwell and Dabo are less advanced. He remains a work in progress but I think he has to either play in midfield or not at all.

I would argue RWB is in midfield. Ideally we’d loan him out to L1 where he can get a run of games in his best position, but he’s not going to get ahead of Hamer/Sheaf/Kelly for a sustained period here.

On the out ball I agree going forwards and thought Palmer especially needed to improve there. But Sheaf is so good in those tight defensive areas and that’s what we lacked a lot today.

I'd argue with how we've been setting up recently it's almost more of a traditional full back than a wing back so he'd be more exposed there. And even if we revert to more of a wing back role, a winger operates in a very different way to a CDM. MR needs to decide what role he wants Eccles to learn and just get him playing there and working on it.

I agree Sheaf and Hamer are clearly stronger but with fixtures thick and fast we'll need rotation.

Few loose touches today and a few strays passes. But he was very good at filling the gaps and covering players who had pushed on. Played a part in the 1st goal putting his foot in to break up play

Improving all the time but still plenty to work on. Does the ugly and simple things really well. He may get rest on Tuesday but that should not be a negative thing more of recovery thing. I will say now i have no reaction seeing his name in the midfield with this system. And that before Cardiff game was not the case, which shows he is making strides

I'd say he's comfortably ahead of Kelly in the pecking order now (even if you ignore Kelly's injuries).

Hamer and Sheaf rightly first choice but with injuries, suspensions and tiredness I think Eccles will get plenty of game time this season and is more than adequate back up.

Three wins on the bounce and he’s still being doubted by some on here
The comments when he was starting against Cardiff were odious by some on here
As for the he needs to be loaned out brigade , do wins against Cardiff , Sheff United and Stoke , two of those away just show his mentality
Back this lad cause he is already a very competent member of our first team squad , and for me one who will get better and better the more he plays

Absolutely back him keep him here and fight for a place but for fuck sake keep him away from RWB for the time being... he is young and naive playing against some seasoned pros he will develop better here than against some of the cloggers in league 1

It’s nothing to do with Eccles our recent form. It’s a team game and the whole team has pulled together. Like some have already said above he was non existent in the first half yesterday. They nearly scored after about 10 mins from him giving the ball away which then led to them having 3 corners in a row.

I just don’t see it with Eccles. What’s his outstanding attribute? There’s nothing he can do better than Gus, Sheaf or even Kelly. He’s an Adam Walker regen.

Feel free to prove me wrong

Apart from the fact that Walker played 18 minutes of league football in his entire career you're right it's very hard to prove you wrong.

He's a decent squad player, and a good option to have on the bench.
He can certainly do a job if you want to see out a game.

Agreed, happy to have around the squad on the bench as one of our lower earners, can’t have everyone on the big bucks but don’t see him as a starting player personally. I hope his injuries are behind him now but he usually appears to be in that Kelly and Godden mould of injury prone.

I’m not afraid when I see him on the pitch but also I don’t see us progressing up the ladder with him in the lineup but he does a job

As a no nonsense player to protect the back four, I think if he can stay clear of injury as he plays more games and becomes more comfortable and experienced he could be a very useful player for us in the next few years.

Yes, we'd need more talented players around him, but he could help give them freedom to do that by doing the nitty-gritty.

I'm not saying that will definitely be the case, but he could potentially be that player.

This. At the minute looks like the typical ten a penny midfielder who if he leaves there’s always another one around the corner. Don’t mind him as a squad member who will be on a minimal contract and can come in and do a job in more than one position when injuries arise.
Never going to be a world beater.
