But then any foul committed is cheating.

Look at 87 - Kilcline almost karate chopped one of their players. In a highly amusing article I think in the guardian he said the ref came over to him and said “what the fuck was that don’t do it again for Christ sake”

Winners have iron men who by your definition cheat - it’s really playing the system to maximum advantage.

Leeds in the 70’s

Man Utd In the Keane years

West Ham we’re succesful when they didn’t play the West Ham way but has Dicks and Ince kicking lumps out of opponents.
How on earth is any foul cheating? What a load of nonsense. Ha!!

So a genuine attempt for the ball, but the player just mistimes it and catches their player is cheating? A player tries to clear the ball, but catches the opposition player with his boot is cheating?

Okay.

Last night though we set out to win the game by playing good football. They seemed more interested in stopping us by any means.

We had the beating of them without Davies stepping on their player's leg didn't we?

There was no need for Davies to step on their player or kick out against Forte.

If the conditions had been better I think we would have been a couple of goals up in that first half.

So on Friday if we are one nil up in the last 10 seconds of injury time and one if their forwards is behind the defence and in on goal but outside the area you wouldn’t want Burge to just lunge at him and take him out the game and take a red card for the team?

Nope and I hate that term with a passion 'take one for the team' I really do.

Seems to have become part and parcel of football and it needs wiping out from the game.

Surely the pragmatist in you sees the utility of being cynical? We have Doyle in our team!

An extreme example of ‘taking one for the team’ is Suarez in the 2010 World Cup, saves a shot (that would’ve been a goal) with his hands to deny Ghana a winner. Gets a red card and Uruguay win in penalties. It was a disgrace, to the neutral, but, would I complain if we did that to win on Friday? Or England did that to get to the semi-finals of the World Cup? No I would not.

The reason diving is so rampant in football, is because there’s no deterrent against diving. Let’s take our penalty last night, Bayliss at worst, dived, at best, went down very easily. There’s three outcomes; he gets a yellow card for diving, he gets a penalty or play continues. Players hardly get booked for diving so there’s all the incentive to dive cynically in the chance you’ll win a penalty.

I understand why it happens and I understand Doyle's value to the team and why we need players like that these days, doesn't mean I have to like it though.

I don't like to see any diving in the game, so no, I don't want to see the City do it and I don't want to see England do it either.

It needs to be stamped out. If all incidents were looked at retrospectively and 3 game bans were handed out to anyone caught deliberately diving, then it would be wiped out from the game.

Deliberate or not a player has been cheated out of a situation. However it is a physical game and all the better for it. Stand on the track and far more goes on than you realise. He should have scored, apart from the shove in the back or the dead leg!

The issue of that is the law is ambiguous, take last night’s incident, there was contact, so you could say it was pen and that Bayliss had the right to go down. Players now do go down whenever there is contact, at all levels. Whether Bayliss was, as MR said, avoiding a ‘meaty challenge’ or cynically diving, again, is another issue.

I remember one incident in a Scottish Cup final, I think McPake (my memory of the specifics are very murky), conceded a penalty by pulling a player backwards, but the player falls forwards. That right there literally defies physics. It’s silly when pundits have to to zoom in on incidents for the slightest bit of contact, and when there is, the decision is justified. The law is completely devoid of common sense.

I do agree that something needs to be done tactical fouling because the law doesn’t compensate counter attacking teams well enough. But, you’ve got to appreciate that the rules are rigid and reactive in nature, so are always playing catch up to a bit of gamesmanship.

Doyle cons refs and chips away all the time. McNulty got a guy sent off the other week when it looked like he’d been shot by a sniper. The challenge was very mild.

Nice teams win nothing. It makes me laugh when people talk about Arsenal. They were at their most successful when Vierra and Petit were in the Middle field and would kick hit or stamp on anything that moved.
Challenge on McNulty was a hard one. There was no way he was feigning injury. He was really hurt.

The refs that are on BT Sport often say players should go down 'if he had gone down it would have been a pen'. If that's what the refs are saying how can you expect players to try and stay on their feet.

It's all gone to pot and needs a massive overhaul.

Have to say I do have a lot of sympathy these days with refs.

the refs in this league have been shocking. I can handle them making mistakes but the inconsistency is off the scale.
If the fouls in L2 were punished to the same standard as the Premiership there'd be at least one red every match.
Up until his injury Jones was getting assaulted every game.

Agree. They are under so much pressure these days mind, what with players surrounding them and managers going beserk on the touchline and the TV experts ripping them apart on the minutest detail.

It's a job I'd loathe to do.

That’s precisely my point. Players have all the incentives to dive, because referees apply the word of the law too literally... Football isn’t a non-contact sport like basketball, so I find it pretty ridiculous that the sport now basically says any contact and it’s a foul.

It worked in our favour on Saturday, and I’m certainly not going to complain that we got a penalty that shouldn’t have been. You’ve got to play the rules of the game. Be it tactical fouling, diving, or whatever...

YEp me too. Reffed for about 10 years great fun but also so lonely on the pitch.

Me too. Best seat in the house though.

Frustrated though when 'colleagues' standard is poor, inconsistent and sometimes actual ignorance of the laws of the game. That is why I started reffing in the first place. You cannot complain if you are not prepared to do it yourself, something many on here ought to contemplate.

so you only complain about things you do yourself? You never groan about MPs, your GP, the police etc?
