When Dovin got injured, the camera panned to the bench and Wilson was getting ready to come on.

And then. God knows why, the decision was made to bring biscuit fingers on instead and the rest is history. I'd love to know what that chain of events was all about.

But don't you know how amazing Collins did coming on in a big game like Sheff Utd away? He's such a hero.

And that's not a large enough number of games to really guage the possibility of long-term success by results alone.

There have been some very positive aspects and improvement in individual performances (Rudoni, for example, looks a different player under Lampard). There have also been more worrying signs of tactical rigidity and lack of pragmatism.

I don't think anyone's writing him off, but it's ok to criticise where due, and to still be on the fence regarding the likelihood of long-term success.

Next season is the important one, when we will be able to properly judge how good he is for us.

1. If we leave gaps between the lines then that's an issue with the formation and how it is set up. I'm not saying we shouldn't play it, I'm saying that opposition coaches can pretty much assume that is how FL will set up and so more easily plan for it.

2. I agree Wilson is hardly the best keeper in the world, but playing a keeper who is literally costing you at least a goal a game is madness. Take today - he was pretty decent for 85 minutes but deep down you just knew that inexplicable fuck up was coming.

3. Again, fair point. The bench is quite a drop off in standard from the first team, especially at the moment with the injuries. But then if the players are tired (which they clearly have been) then that makes it all the more likely that you won't be making the choice of bringing on those players in future games because they'll have to start.

4. Injuries are part and parcel of the game, and some are unavoidable. But others most definitely are and the fact we're seeing so many now just suggests that they're being pushed beyond their physical capabilites. I don't think the fitness of the squad has been managed well lately, and that itself was probably built up over months of workload where minor issues slowly become more severe.

It’s like the Simms last season argument tho. Statistically you’ve got two very different populations. That ten game run isn’t really representative. You’ve got a streak of 90% win rate then a streak of 30% win rate. And the 30% streak is twice as long.

If you want to go on about last season fine, but that reflects even more badly on Lampard because even though I've never been a Collins fan he was playing far better than he is now so what's happened to him?

It’s far too small a sample size. Not even a season. But he’s not been winning every other game. He’s has a poor ten then an amazing ten then a poor ten. Like a striker who knocks in five one game then doesn’t score for nine. Yes technically scores one in two but really isn’t one in nine.

Tbh I think Robins had a pretty horrendous blind spot for keepers but it's Lampard playing Collins atm, even though Wilson is shite its a bit weird to still be playing someone who's gifting the opposition a goal every other game atm.

One thing that's clear with Lampard is he/we really seem to struggle against poorer teams, particularly away from home.

We could barely have had a more favourable run of away games to end the season. One point from Derby, Hull, Plymouth and Luton is absolutely shocking.

Clearly Lampard has zero confidence in Wilson to play the way he wants us to, and sees the risk of completely upsetting our tactics during a four-game playoff run as greater than the risk of Collins fucking something up in any given game. It’s just a shame that both those risks seem unreasonably high at the moment, but we have no good options here.

I think that was before the massive amount of point costing mistakes hes making now .

If he’s still here by the end of next season, that’s when you judge him. He came in to a mess, untangled it, and has again struggled with both injuries and sticking too rigidly to the same tactics that work at home but not away. Given the situation we were in I can see why he focused on getting the players to be very familiar with one system rather than being a Jack of several but masters of none.

It’s on him to recruit well in the summer and come up with an alternative on the road. Since he arrived we have only lost at home against the top 2 in the league and even one of those was because Collins did a Collins. If he succeeds in getting the squad to master two different systems the away form will get better too.
