Liam Kelly seems to be getting a lot of sh*t from our fans this season. Yes, his injury record has been bad over the last 2 years, but in our first season back in The Championship, it was his return to fitness and partnership with Matty James which kept us in the league. Last season he basically missed, but in one of his brief appearances played a sublime ball into Godden to win us the Bristol City match. This season he's had a total of what, 15-20 mins off the bench?
I get he is injury prone, but everyone saying he is League 2 standard etc, is way off the mark. A fit Kelly for the last 1/2 of this season will be an excellent option for Robins. Of course he is not the future and will surely be moved on when his contract comes to an end, but ability wise, and for what he has achieved at the club (2 promotions), I think there should be a little more respect for the man.

Shipley achieved 2 promotions?

I can't see how Kelly is the solution to any of our problems right now, and he probably needs a new challenge, but I do agree with the respect thing. He's been a great player for this club and some of the ways people talk about him is pretty distasteful. We've got other players who have contributed little in the last season who are eating up a wage bill, and they haven't got the history he does with us.

Problem with Kelly is its become clear over a period of time that we've been playing above his level, even when he was fit. We're now in a position where we're playing above his level and he's not fully fit because he's been out injured.

That doesn't mean we don't respect what he's been through with us here and no doubt he has been an outstanding leader for this club, through some very important moments in our recent history.

No doubt having him around the club means we can benefit from his experience, but in terms of his impact on the pitch, I just don't think we can rely on him to come on and be a game changer at this level.

Do you mean like calling out players as burdens?

I've thought that whenever he has come back from a major injury he has looked off the pace but then got better the more game time he has. I would wait and see before saying he is past it or not up to the level we require. Lot of people have been saying Fadz has needed replacing every season so far and he has proved them wrong. All players reach their sell by date and there is little sentiment in football. However, he is here this season and I for one am willing to wait and see.

History is irrelevant and he’s has a legendary status that is over rated even the song was bollocks “never give the ball away”. Was not good enough for the championship when we got promoted. 1st season Matty James made the difference not Kelly some people have rose tinted glasses

He still does some things well but his use of the ball is not good enough at this level and other midfielders are just a step above him in technique and football brain.

Surely the song refers to Doyle never giving the ball away which was in fact even more preposterous.

Disagree completely. Kelly was the most important factor in our survival that season. In my opinion he was a much more influential figure than Matty James. Indeed his performance in the pivotal match at Rotherham was superb. If you look at the points per game in the matches Kelly played as opposed to the ppg in the matches he missed, his influence that season is plain to see.
I would be surprised, considering his injury record, if his contract is extended at the end of the season. However, I think it is an indication of the way Kelly is viewed and valued by Robins that he has been straight back into the squad and is now getting minutes in the pitch straight away after recovering from injury.

Nah fuck him, gets paid to sit on the injury table. 2 year contract was foolish, 1 year deserved but never two

Not one to boo him nor criticise… just disappointed he’s still on our books

He’s straight back on the bench because our squad is pathetically small and Robins has no other options except kids.
I don’t hate Kelly or have any I’ll feeling towards him but the truth is he is not good enough for this team in this division.

Hysteria aside he will get game time now with COH out and Palmer unable to complete 90 minutes. Opportunity to push Hamer upfield and bench Allen for a bit perhaps. With a run of games he will probably be fine form wise.

I think his last injury has done for him, and as such he can’t cut it at this level anymore. That’s no disrespect to him, he’s been a great servant to the club and he should be proud of his contribution over the last few years.

personally i think he can't cut it at any level now way to injury prone and no club can afford to pay his wages all while he is lying down on the injury table for 6 months or more. he is finished and he knows it to.

They could be renovating - I doubt they’d uproot the family for a few months and then move again based on a new club. Most players don’t move every time they change clubs - Godden’s family live in Kent, from what I remember.
They have just moved house, to a house that has land.

Definitely his new gaf. Has a treatment table in his hobby room alongside his framed City shirt and Champions League winners medal.

Been a great servant and enjoyed many games where he’s played well but sadly not fit enough to consistently play at this level now.
He’s hardly been a servant and the last 2 years he’s barely earnt his money but we should respect the role he played in our promotions.
