It looks like 4-3-3 will be the way forward based on the Lampards comments about wingers.

I’ve been trying to think of a player to compare Grimes to and the closest I can think of is Ollie Norwood. Very gifted on the ball, plays deep, model pro but isn’t a tough tackling, shouty captain type at all. He’ll be doing Allen’s role now with the hope that Torp and whoever else makes up the midfield 3 provides a bit of bite.

Just read he completed the most tackles in the Championship this season. Don't know if any of them were any good and he has played every game which would bump it up.

Traditionally they were, nowadays a lot of possession teams use them as the focal point between Defence and midfield, especially when you play shorter passes. It allows the midfield to stay further up, rather than dropping back to get the ball

I mean depends on the system and the player. Some systems will put in a DM who is there to win the ball back and retain the ball. Ala Ben Sheaf 22/23.

Some systems will want them to act more as a quarterback and move the ball and create chances from deep.

Both exist still although the later is more common in the modern game. Was just saying due to how Swansea play it’s no shock he has lower defensive stats as the team often have the ball.

Traditionally yes but not always. Still think Grimes numbers would be high compared to the rest of Swansea.

Same reason his pass stats are really high is due to the amount of the ball they keep. Can’t tackle a player who doesn’t have the ball

Anyway, his main job is to pick the ball up from the defence or keeper and help us play through the opposition press.

He's very good at that.

I'm not worried about how many tackles he mates or his "ground duel %" as that simply is not his role.

Swansea have the second highest possession in the league. Press high and up the pitch.

It’s not a lack of ability for the defensive stats just a lack of time the opposition have the ball. Cant tackle someone who doesn’t have the ball.

Most good teams don't though, winning the ball back is these days much more a whole team affair with pressing traps etc.

He's made more tackles than any other player in the championship this season so far....

Whenever I have seen him play he has been a standout player on the pitch. Maybe one of the reasons we keep doing badly against Swansea. Add this to his stats and videos you can see it isn't just against us that he does it to.

I also can't think of another player who is an ever present over different seasons, even going a whole season playing every minute. Most players don't even get near to doing it once so fitness isn't a problem. Built of rock and not glass like we normally get.

Thorn was a bad manager, infact he was barely a manager but he still dealt a shit hand

Pretty sure he turned up for training one day in his second pre season and asked where Bigirimana was and he'd been flogged without his knowledge

As we have mentioned as well the club were openly desperate to flog Juke as well as Ben Turner at the start of the season

I think it rather depends alot on the team , better teams like man city who as you say like to control the game don't defend as often because they've got the ball more .. but a team like Liverpool who like to disposses and counter fast will use their defensive midfielders differently..

My concerns with him are his lack of mobility, his defensive attributes, his age and the speed at which he can progress the ball.

He is undoubtedly very gifted on the ball, which if you’d read any of my posts on him, you would know.

Conspicuous that in order for you to emphasise your original point you chose to neglect mentioning this aspect of his game initially. I didn't imagine that.
